  • Today is Independence Day of Indonesia
    • On August 17, 1945, Indonesia declared its independence from Netherlands.

  • Today is Independence Day of Gabon (Gabonese Republic)
    • Gabon, is a country on the west coast of Central Africa that had been under French rule till August 17, 1960.

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi is on a 2-day visit to Bhutan.
    • During this visit, he held talks with his Bhutanese counterpart Dr. Lotay Tshering in Thimpu.
    • India and Bhutan have agreed to take the bilateral ties to new heights and take the cooperation beyond the hydropower sector.
    • The Prime Minister will also inaugurate the Mangdecchu hydropower project and will launch e-payments app BHIM and RuPay card scheme.
    • Modi will also interact with students at Royal University of Bhutan.
National Current Affairs
  • Union Minister for Tribal Affairs Arjun Munda today inaugurated a 9-day National Tribal Festival, Aadi Mahotsav in Polo Grounds of Leh. 
    • This is the 1st mega event arranged by the Centre after the announcement of Union Territory status for Ladakh region which has 97 per cent tribal population.
    • Theme of Aadi Mahotsav 2019 : A celebration of the spirit of Tribal Craft, Culture and Commerce.
  • President Ram Nath Kovind today inaugurated the Presidential Guest House named Jal Kiran at Raj Bhavan in Mumbai.
    • The Guest House will serve as the accommodation for the President and the Prime Minister during their visits to Mumbai.
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • Despite a meeting between Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan and US President Donald Trump last month, the United States has slashed the aid to the cash-strapped nation by nearly $440 million (₹3,100 crore)
    • Before the cut, the aid stood at around $4.5 billion. 
    • In September 2018, the US cancelled financial aid worth $300 million to Pakistan over its failure to tackle terrorism.
  • India's flag carrier Air India on Independence Day became the country's 1st airline to operate a commercial flight over the North Pole
    • The feat was achieved by Air India flight AI173 from Delhi to San Francisco, which usually flies over the Pacific Ocean to enter the US. 
Recent Committees in News
  • Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has approved the  setting up of a Committee under the Chairmanship of Director General (Acquisition) to review the Defence Procurement Procedure (DPP) 2016 and Defence Procurement Manual (DPM) 2009.
    • The Committee will revise and align the procedures with the aim of ensuring seamless flow from asset acquisition to life cycle support. Apart from DG (Acq) 11 other members, not below the rank of Joint Secretary/Major General equivalent, are part of this high-level committee. The Committee has been given six months to submit its recommendations.
Deaths
  • Renowned Bangladeshi novelist and the Ekushey Padak (second highest civilian award in Bangladesh) winning author Rizia Rahman (79) passed away.
    • She wrote in all genres of creative work including short stories, poems, essays and children's fiction but she was renowned for her novels.
    • Bong Theke Bangla, Rokter Okshor and Ghar-Bhanga-Ghar are among some of his more well-known novels.
  • Social worker and Padma Shri awardee Damodar Ganesh Bapat (84) passed away.
    • Bapat was known for his services to leprosy patients at Bhartiya Kushta Nivarak Sangh (BKNS), where he worked for over four decades, in Janjgir-Champa district in Chhattisgarh. 
    • He was awarded the Padma Shri by President Ram Nath Kovind in 2018.
  • Senior journalist Neelum Sharma, a founding anchor with over 20 years of association with DD News, has passed away. 
    • Neelum, known for programmes like 'Badi Charcha' and 'Tejasvini', was conferred with the Nari Shakti Award by President Ram Nath Kovind earlier this year. 
Awards & Honors
  • All-rounder Ravindra Jadeja is among the 19 sportspersons nominated for Arjuna Award by the 12-member award selection committee. 
    • Others include footballer Gurpreet Sandhu, shooter Anjum Moudgil, boxer Sonia Lather, shot-putter Tejinderpal Singh Toor and sprinter Muhammed Anas Yahiya, among others. 
  • Wrestler Bajrang Punia and Paralympics medallist Deepa Malik have been nominated for India's highest sporting honour, Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna.
New Appointments
  • Ravi Shastri has been retained as Team India head coach after BCCI's Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) interviewed five candidates on Friday. 
    • The 57-year-old has been contracted till the 2021 T20 World Cup. Shastri was appointed as head coach in 2017 after Anil Kumble's exit and had earlier served as director from 2014 to 2016.
  • South African Russell Domingo has been appointed as the new head coach of the Bangladeshi cricket team
