International Current Affairs
- Today (29th May 2018) is International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers.
- The day was established to :
- Honour the memory of the UN peacekeepers who have lost their lives in the cause of peace;
- Pay tribute to all the men and women who have served and continue to serve in UN peacekeeping operations for their high level of professionalism, dedication and courage.
- Theme of International Day of UN Peacekeepers 2019 : “Protecting Civilians, Protecting Peace”
- The Maldives has invited Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to address the Parliament during his upcoming visit to the country expected in June.
- PM Modi will visit the Maldives in his first bilateral visit post assuming office for the second term. He had visited the Maldives in November 2018 to attend the oath-taking ceremony of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.
- The Philippines has proposed a law under which students will be required to plant at least 10 trees before they are allowed to graduate from primary school, high school and university.
- Lawmakers said 525 billion trees could be planted in a generation if the law is properly implemented.
- Bangladesh President Abdul Hamid is going to attend Prime Minister Narendra Modi's swearing-in ceremony on May 30, Bangladesh's presidential palace said.
National Current Affairs
- A single bench of Rajasthan High Court has ordered the state government to withdraw all light motor vehicle driving licences of the illiterate.
- An illiterate is virtually a menace for the pedestrians as he wouldn't be in a position to understand road signs and notices of caution written on boards for human safety, the court added.
- In a first-of-its-kind initiative, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has decided to use cold mix tar and chemical concrete to fill the city's potholes and repair roads during monsoon.
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
- The US Treasury Department, in its semi-annual foreign-exchange report, removed India from the list of countries it scrutinizes for currency manipulation.
- India was removed given that it met only one of the three criteria, a "significant" bilateral surplus with US, for two straight reports.
- The US again refrained from labelling China a currency manipulator but kept it on the watchlist.
- Fugitive jeweller Nirav Modi will be produced before a London court on Thursday for a hearing in the extradition case in connection with the ₹14,000-crore PNB scam.
- The 48-year-old, whose third attempt at seeking bail was recently rejected, has been lodged in London's Wandsworth Prison.
- Nirav was arrested in March by Scotland Yard officers on an extradition warrant.
- The Russian government has revealed it incurred a total loss of around 35 billion rubles (around $542 million) owing to failed rocket launches between 2010-18.
- The figure is around 13 times more than what was spent on insurance, with over 10 billion rubles uncovered by insurance.
- The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has increased the Real Time Gross Settlement (RTGS) time window for customer transactions (initial cut-off) from 4.30pm to 6pm, effective June 1.
- The transactions will now take place under three windows – 8am to 11am, 11am to 1pm and 1pm to 6pm.
- The minimum amount to be remitted through RTGS is ₹2 lakh with no upper limit.

- Indian music label T-Series has become the 1st YouTube channel to reach 100 million subscribers, beating its competitor PewDiePie, who has 96 million subscribers currently.
- Indian writer Annie Zaidi was announced as the winner of the USD 100,000 Nine Dots Prize 2019.
- The Nine Dots Prize is a book prize for creative thinking that tackles contemporary societal issues.
- Mumbai-based Zaidi, a freelance writer whose work includes reportage, essays, short stories, poetry and plays, won for her entry 'Bread, Cement, Cactus' - combining memoir and reportage to explore concepts of home and belonging rooted in her experience of contemporar ..
MOUs & Agreements
- The National Small Industries Corporation Limited (NSIC) signs the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) for the year 2019-20.
- The MOU envisages provision of enhanced services by NSIC under its Marketing, Financial, Technology and Other support services schemes, for MSMEs in the country.
- The Indian Air Force has signed an MoU with Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) for crew selection and training for India's spaceflight programme Gaganyaan.
Deaths
- Murray Gell-Mann (89), a physicist who theorized the existence of the quark and won a Nobel Prize for his method of classifying particles, has passed away.
- Considered among the most important physicists of the 20th century, the American Jewish scientist theorized in the 1960s that subatomic particles — protons and neutrons — were composed of paired subunits he called quarks.
New Appointments
- BJP leader Pema Khandu took oath as the Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh along with Deputy CM Chowna Mein.
- Khandu was administered the oath of office and secrecy by Governor Brigadier (Retd) BD Mishra.
- Biju Janata Dal (BJD) chief Naveen Patnaik took oath as Odisha Chief Minister for a 5th consecutive term.
- BJD came to power in the state after winning 112 of 146 seats in the state Assembly election.
- Swedish caller ID service Truecaller has appointed former Flipkart executive Sandeep Patil as the Managing Director of its India operations.
- He became part of Truecaller's global management team effective May 28, 2019.
- Walmart announced it has appointed Suresh Kumar to new elevated Chief Technology Officer and Chief Development Officer role reporting directly to CEO Doug McMillon, effective July 8.
- IndiGo's Chief Operating Officer (COO) Wolfgang Prock-Schauer has been given additional charge as the low-cost airline's President.
- He will now be responsible for operational aspects such as flight operations, maintenance and engineering, inflight services and other management functions.
