Hindu Editorial Topic 1 : "The power of two: on simultaneous elections to the Assemblies and Lok Sabha"
  • Simultaneous - happening or done at the same time
  • Campaign - a series of actions intended to produce political or social change
  • Variable - something that can change and affect the result of a situation
  • Opposition - the political parties in a country that are not part of the government
  • Salient - a salient fact, issue, or feature is one that is especially noticeable or relevant
  • Rival - a person, team, or business that competes with another
  • Alliance - an arrangement between two or more people, groups, or countries by which they agree to work together to achieve something
  • Backlash - a strong, negative, and often angry reaction to something that has happened, especially a political or social change
  • Bifurcation - to divide into two separate parts
  • Tenure - the period of time during which someone has an important job or is an elected official
  • Reassure - to make someone feel less worried about something
  • Significant - very large or noticeable
  • Per capita income - average income earned per person in a given area (city, region, country, etc.) in a specified year
  • Irrigation - to supply land with water so that crops and plants will grow
  • Flip side - the negative aspects of an idea, plan, or situation
  • Ballooning - to quickly increase in size, weight, or importance:
  • Overcome - to succeed in dealing with or controlling a problem
  • One-upmanship - a way of behaving in which someone tries to get an advantage by appearing to be more skilful, important etc than other people
  • Crucial - something that is crucial is extremely important because it has a major effect on the result of something
  • Substantive - important or serious, or referring to the most important or serious issues
  • Differentiation - the act of seeing or showing a difference between things
  • Scenario - a situation that could possibly happen
  • Incumbency - an official position
  • Welfare - the health and happiness of people
  • Buoy - to encourage someone and make them feel more confident
  • Stronghold - a place where people fighting an enemy can defend or organize themselves
  • Former - used for describing someone or something that had a particular job, title, status etc in the past, but not now
  • Dominant - more important, powerful, or successful than the other people or things of the same type

  • Showdown - a big meeting, argument, or fight that finally settles a disagreement between people or proves who is the best
  • Straddle - to be on both sides of something
  • Rebel - someone who tries to remove a government or leader using force

  • Fled - to escape from a dangerous situation or place very quickly
  • Territory - an area of land controlled by a particular country, leader, or army
  • Imminent - likely or certain to happen very soon

  • Forefront - a leading or important position
  • Liberate -  to make a place or the people in it free from soldiers who have been controlling it
  • Destruction - damage that is so severe that something stops existing or can never return to its normal state
  • Insurgent - someone who belongs to a group of people fighting to take control of their country by force
  • Shrink - to become smaller in size
  • Vast - extremely large
  • Tactic - a particular method or plan for achieving something
  • Predecessor - something that has been replaced by another thing
  • Decline - to become less or worse
  • Civil war - a war fought between different groups of people within the same country
  • Remnant - a small remaining part of something
  • Revival - the process of becoming active, successful, or popular again
  • Stakeholder - someone who has an interest in the success of a plan, system, or organization
  • Mindful - careful about or conscious of something
  • Geopolitical - related to a country’s position, economy, and population influence its politics, especially in relation to other countries
  • Sectarian - caused by disagreements among people from different religious groups
  • Minefield - a situation or process with many possible problems or dangers
  • Exploit - to treat someone unfairly in order to get some benefit for yourself
  • Autonomous -  an autonomous state, region, or organization is independent and has the power to govern itself
  • Vital - very important, necessary, or essential
  • Chaos - a situation in which everything is confused and in a mess
