International Current Affairs
  • Today (2nd February) is World Wetlands Day.
    • This Day is celebrated to raise public awareness about the importance and value of wetlands.
    • On this date in the year 1971, the Convention on Wetlands, known as the Ramsar Convention, was adopted in the Iranian city of Ramsar, drawing attention to the importance of wetlands. 
    • Theme of World Wetlands Day 2019 :  'Wetlands and Climate Change'
  • The United States has suspended its obligations under the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty with Russia effective February 2.
    • The US has accused Russia of violating the Cold War-era pact by deploying a ground-based cruise missile.
    • Note : The INF treaty required the elimination of both US and Russia's land-based nuclear missiles from Europe.
  • Russian President Vladimir Putin today announced that the country will follow US example and withdraw from the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty within 6 months. 
    • He added that Russia will design new intermediate-range weapons. 
    • The 1987 arms control pact bans both the US and Russia from stationing short- and intermediate-range land-based missiles in Europe.
  • Uzbekistan has lifted the ban on teaching Political Science, according to a decree issued by President Shavkat Mirziyoyev
    • The subject was entirely banned in 2015 under the regime of President Islam Karimov on the grounds that it is a western pseudoscience that does not take into account the "Uzbek model" of development.
National Current Affairs
  • The Bihar Cabinet today approved the 10% reservation in government jobs and educational institutes for economically weaker section in the general category in the state. 
  • The Centre today banned the Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI) for a period of five more years starting February 1 under Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act
    • It said the organisation was indulging in activities “prejudicial to the security of the country” and disturbing peace and communal harmony
  • Prime Minister  Narendra Modi today dedicate to the nation, the Railway electrification of 294 kilometre long Andal- Sainthia-Pakur-Malda  and Khana- Sainthia Sections in Durgapur (West Bengal).
    • Electrification of this section will enable ease of transportation of coal, stone chips and ballast to North and North East India in a seamless manner. 
    • Modi also dedicated the 20 kilometre long Hijli- Narayangarh third line to the nation  .
  • In a huge relief to a number of students who fail to qualify to enter into prestigious institutions like IITs due to negative marking, Madras High Court ruled against negative marking in competitive examinations saying they are bad in law.
    • Disposing of a writ petition filed six years back by an IIT JEE aspirant who failed to clear the Mains due to negative marking, Justice R Mahadevan held that the practice should be done away with immediately. 
  • The Kala Ghoda Arts Festival (KGAF 2019), India’s largest multi-cultural street festival, began in Mumbai today. 
    • Commemorating 20 years of its inception, KGAF 2019 celebrates two glorious decades of art and culture through cinema, theatre, dance, literature and sculpture.
Awards & Honors
  • Behrouz Boochani, an Iranian held in an Australian-run camp on a Papua New Guinea island, has won A$100,000 ($72,390) Victorian Prize 2019 (Australia's top literary prize) for his book 'No Friend But the Mountains: Writing from Manus Prison'.
    • Boochani has been held in the Manus Island camp since shortly after he was plucked off a refugee boat on its way to Australia six years ago.
    • He wrote this book on his mobile phone and delivered it to a translator through WhatsApp.
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • China is going to provide a loan of $2.5 billion to Pakistan to boost its foreign exchange reserves.
    • Pakistan is currently seeing depleted foreign cash reserves and mounting external debt.
    • With the anticipated USD 2.5 billion deposits, China's contribution in this fiscal year alone would surge to USD 4.5 billion.
    • China had last year deposited $2 billion in the State Bank of Pakistan
  • With yesterday's Union Budget 2019, Finance Minister Piyush Goyal became the 1st Chartered Accountant (CA) to present a Budget
    • The 54-year-old, who's also the Union Minister of Corporate Affairs, Railways and Coal, was an all-India second-rank holder CA and second-rank holder in Law from Mumbai University. 
    • He has been an investment banker and also served on boards of SBI and Bank of Baroda.
  • The Sovereign Gold Bond Scheme 2018-19 (Series 6) will be opened from Monday and will continue till Friday.
    • The issue price of the Bond during this subion period will be Rs. 3326/-  per gram with the settlement date of 1st of February.
