International Current Affairs
  • Chief of Air Staff Air Chief Marshal Birender Singh Dhanoa is on a 4-day visit to Bangladesh from today.
    • During this visit, he will meet the Chiefs of the three Defence Services and the Prime Minister of Bangladesh.
    • The Air Chief will also visit operational and training units of Bangladesh Air Force.
  • The Red Cross today called for a total ban on Nuclear Weapons, warning of the growing risk that such arms could again be used with devastating effect.
    • The International Committee of the Red Cross and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies launched a global campaign to raise awareness about the rising nuclear threat facing the world.
    • The notonukes.org campaign comes after the United States and Russia announced to abandon the 1987 Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty.
    • Aim of this campaign : To encourage people to lobby their governments to sign and ratify the UN Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons, which has so far been signed by 70 nations and ratified by 21.
National Current Affairs
  • In a bid to protect and conserve lions, identified as one of the endangered species by the government, the Ministry of Environment has launched a 3-year Asiatic Lion Conservation Project in collaboration with the state of Gujarat, which is the last habitat of the big cat.  
    • The Rs 98-crore project, for which the Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change (MoEFCC) has allocated Rs 59 crores, spans three years -- 2018-19, 2019-20 and 2020-21 -- will focus on better management of the lion habitat, disease control and veterinary care for them.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched several development projects in Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka on a day-long visit to the three states.
    • At Guntur in Andhra Pradesh, the Prime Minister dedicated to the nation the 1.33 million metric ton capacity Visakhapatnam Strategic Petroleum Reserve facility
      • He also inaugurated Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Limited's Vashishta and S1 development project located in the Krishna-Godavari Offshore Basin. 
      • Foundation stone was also laid for setting up of a new terminal of BPCL at Krishnapatnam.
    • At Tiruppur in Tamil Nadu, Mr Modi commissioned the 10-km stretch of the Chennai Metro rail through video-conferencing. 
      • The stretch connects DMS and Washermanpet and also completes the 45-km long Metro rail first phase in the state capital.
      • Modi also laid the foundation stone for a 100-bedded ESIC hospital, besides inaugurating a 470-bedded modern ESIC hospital in Chennai. 
      • He also launched the modernisation and expansion works of Chennai and Trichy airport terminals.
    • At Hubli in Karnataka, the Prime Minister laid the foundation stone of Indian Institute of Technology - Dharwad and Indian Institute of Information Technology - Dharwad
    • City Gas Distribution Project at Dharwad was also unveiled. 
    • Modi also dedicated to the nation SPR facilities in Mangalore and Padur. 
  • The Meghalaya Cabinet has decided to rename the Dikkibandi stadium in Tura town after former Lok Sabha Speaker Purno A Sangma.
    • Purno A Sangma is also a former chief minister of Meghalaya. 
    • He was elected from the Tura Lok Sabha seat a number of times. 
    • Note : Conrad K Sangma and James K Sangma are sons of Purno A Sangma.
Science & Technology
  • CH-47F (I), the 1st of the 15 Chinook heavy lift helicopters ordered by the Indian Air Force (IAF) arrived in India today.
    • The helicopter, which can carry around 10 tonnes of load, has been delivered ahead of schedule. 
    • It was received at the Mundra Port in Gujarat and will be transported to its home base at Chandigarh.
    • Maker of Chinooks : Boeing
    • Note : India had signed a 3 billion dollar deal with the United States in September 2015 for the purchase of 15 Chinook heavy lift and 22 AH-64E Apache attack helicopters.
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has slapped a penalty of ₹1 crore on India's largest lender State Bank of India (SBI)
    • The central bank found SBI guilty of not monitoring the end use of funds of one of its borrowers. 
  • The Tamil Nadu government today announced special assistance of ₹2,000 to each of nearly 60 lakh Below Poverty Line (BPL) families in the state.  
    • A total of ₹1,200 crore will be allocated for the same.

  • The Finance Ministry today announced that the total amount of deposits in Jan Dhan accounts is set to cross ₹90,000 crore.
    • The deposits, which have been steadily rising since March 2017, already reached nearly ₹89,258 crore as on January 30.
    • Note : Over 34 crore accounts have been opened under the scheme so far, with an average deposit of ₹2,615.
  • ASCEND 2019, an ambitious initiative of the Kerala government to position the state as an investment hotspot, was began today. 
    • Union Minister of Commerce & Industries and Civil Aviation Suresh Prabhu was the chief guest at the opening ceremony.
    • Aim of ASCEND 2019 : To make Kerala a top investment destination and empower entrepreneurs to launch their enterprises in a speedy and hassle-free manner. 
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the 13th International Oil and Gas Conference - PETROTECH-2019 in Greater Noida.
    • The 3-day biennial event began at India Expo Mart yesterday. 
    • The Prime Minister stressed on the need to move towards transparent and flexible markets for oil and gas to serve energy needs in an optimal manner.
 Deaths
  • Mohammad Hanif Syed, one of the 3 convicts sentenced to death in the 2003 Mumbai twin bomb blasts and currently lodged in the Nagpur Central Jail, has died of cardiac arrest.
    • Syed, his wife Fehmida and third conspirator Ashrat Ansari were convicted by a POTA (Prevention Of Terrorism Act) court in 2009 over the blasts that left over 50 dead.
New Appointments
  • Egypt's President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi has been elected as the Chairman of the African Union at the continental body's summit in Ethiopia.  
    • El-Sisi's election brought to an end the one-year chairmanship of Rwanda's President Paul Kagame.
  • Australia spin legend Shane Warne was named as the Brand ambassador of Rajasthan Royals for the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2019. 
    • Note : Rajasthan Royals also announced that they will sport Pink Jersey in the season.
