The movie, directed by Rima Das, follows the story of a ten-year-old girl (played by child actor Bhanita Das) with dreams to form her own rock band, who goes in search of an electric guitar in her village. Das is not only the director, but also the writer, cinematographer, editor and producer of the film, which had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival 2017.
A 12-membered jury — led by Mr SV Rajendra Singh Babu — picked the film from 27 other contenders, including Hichki, Padmaavat, Raazi, Love Sonia, Nude, Pihu and Padman. The film is going to represent india In the Best Foreign Language category at the 91st Academy Awards (OSCARS 2019).
Important Note : 'Village Rockstars' had bagged the Best Feature Film award at the 65th National Film Awards, besides also winning the awards for Best Child Artist, Best Location Sound Recordist and Best Editing. Village Rockstars was the 1st Assam movie to win the National Award in 29 years.
Last year, Amit Masurkar's acclaimed Black Comedy film starred by Rajkummar Rao, "Newton" has been selected as India's entry to OSCARS 2018, but couldn't make it to the finals.
