Prime Minister Narendra Modi today launched the government-funded health insurance scheme, Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojna (PMJAY) in Ranchi (Jharkhand). The cashless scheme is part of the government’s Ayushman Bharat umbrella policy for healthcare. This scheme offers an annual cover of ₹5 lakh to economically weaker sections of society. This is the world's largest public health insurance scheme

The scheme will target poor, deprived rural families and identified occupational category of urban workers’ families, 80.3 million in rural and 23.3 million in urban areas, as per the latest Socio-Economic Caste Census (SECC) data. It will cover around 50 crore people.

The National Health Agency (NHA), the apex body implementing the scheme has launched a website (mera.pmjay.gov.in) and a helpline number (14555) for this scheme.
