  • Drift - to go from one state to another without realizing it
  • Arrest - to stop a process from continuing, especially to stop a bad situation from getting worse
  • Despite - used for saying that something happens even though something else might have prevented it
  • Concern - a feeling of worry about something, especially one that a lot of people have about an important issue
  • Initiative - an important action that is intended to solve a problem
  • Conclude - to end
  • Contingent - a group of soldiers, police, vehicles etc from a particular place, forming part of a larger group
  • Observer mission - a mission to an area of conflict in order to observe proceedings
  • Unilateral - done or decided by one country, group, or person, often without considering what other countries etc think or want
  • Multilateral - involving three or more groups, especially the governments of three or more countries
  • Summit - a meeting or series of meetings between leaders of two or more countries
  • Formally - in a way that follows the correct or suitable official methods
  • Host - a place or organization that arranges a special event and provides the area, buildings, equipment, or services needed for it
  • Broach - to begin discussing something with someone
  • Not cut any ice (with someone) - to fail to impress or influence someone
  • Counterterrorism - the actions and methods of a country that are intended to stop the activities of people who use violence to achieve political aims
  • Adequate - good enough or large enough for a particular purpose
  • Province - one of many areas into which some countries are divided
  • Drive a wedge - to cause two people or groups to disagree or be unfriendly to one another
  • Unseemly - unseemly behaviour is embarrassing or upsets people because it is not suitable in a particular situation
  • Controversy - a disagreement, especially about a public policy or a moral issue that a lot of people have strong feelings about
  • Renew - to arrange for something to continue for a longer period of time
  • Diplomatic - relating to the profession or skill of preserving or creating friendly relationships between countries
  • Undermine - to make something or someone become gradually less effective, confident, or successful

  • Term - a period of time during which a politician or other official holds their job
  • Discomfiture - a feeling of being embarrassed
  • Hydropower - hydroelectric power (= the production of electricity by the force of fast moving water)
  • Infrastructure - the set of systems within a place or organization that affect how well it operates, for example the telephone and transport systems in a country
  • Ambitious - an ambitious plan, aim, or attempt is difficult and will need a lot of effort to succeed

  • Sea-port - a town by the sea with a large port (an area of water where ships stop)
  • Rancour - a feeling of hate or anger that lasts a long time
  • Blockade - an official action that is intended to prevent people or goods from moving from one place to another
  • Destabilise - to cause problems for a country, government, or person in authority so that they become less effective
  • Tenure - the period of time during which someone has an important job or is an elected official
  • Turn a blind eye - to pretend you do not notice something, because you should do something about it but you do not want to
  • Rebuff - to refuse to talk to someone or do what they suggest
  • Address - to give attention to or deal with a matter or problem

  • Vital - very important, necessary, or essential
  • Ensure - to make certain that something happens or is done
  • Tannery - a place where animal skins are made into leather
  • Vigorously - in a way that is very forceful or energetic
  • Revive - to become, or to make something become, active, successful, or popular again
  • Contaminated - made dirty, polluted, or poisonous by the addition of a chemical, waste, or infection
  • Degradation - a situation or condition that makes someone feel ashamed and makes people lose respect for them
  • Significant - very large or noticeable
  • Catastrophic - causing a lot of damage, or making a lot of people suffer
  • Dimension - a part of a situation, especially when it influences the way you think about the situation
