  • Retail - relating to the sale of goods directly to the public for their own use
  • Flip - to change suddenly
  • Stake - the part of a business that you own because you have invested money in it
  • Significant - very important / noticeable
  • Thumbs-up - a reaction that shows you like something such as a plan or idea, or that you will accept it
  • Giant - a very large and successful company
  • Home-grown - a home-grown product, idea, or performer comes from a particular local area or small place
  • Pipped - to defeat someone by a small amount in a competition, game etc
  • Rival - a person, team, or business that competes with another
  • Vying - to compete with other people for something that is difficult to get
  • Acquire - to get something, for example by buying it or being given it
  • The likes of someone/something - someone or something that is equal to or as important as the person or thing being mentioned
  • Seculated - to consider or discuss why something has happened or what might happen
  • Merger - the process of combining two companies or organizations to form a bigger one
  • Play out - to develop or end in a particular way
  • Paradigm - a typical example or model of something
  • Strategic - carefully planned in order to achieve a particular goal, especially in war, business, or politics
  • Alliance - an arrangement between two or more people, groups, or countries by which they agree to work together to achieve something
  • Investor - a person who puts money into something in order to make a profit or get an advantage
  • Firm - a business or company
  • Bourse - a stock market
  • E-tail - the activity of selling things on the Internet
  • Swathes of - a large number of people, or a large amount of something
  • Peddling - to sell something by going to customers, rather than in a shop
  • Accumulate - to get more and more of something over a period of time
  • Full-frontal - direct
  • Despite - used for saying that something happens even though something else might have prevented it
  • Cash-and-carry - a large shop where people can buy large amounts of goods at a cheap price, often so that they can then sell them in their own shops
  • Curb - to control or limit something
  • Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) - an investment in the form of a controlling ownership in a business in one country by an entity based in another country
  • Ostensibly - used for saying that although someone pretends to have one reason for something, there is in fact another reason
  • Belying - to represent something falsely or to hide something
  • Facing heat - to be in a difficult situation in which you have to deal with a lot of problems
  • Brick-and-mortar - a brick-and-mortar business is a traditional business that does not operate on the Internet
  • Vital - very important, necessary, or essential
  • Ruffle - to move something
  • Extant - still existing, usually despite being very old
  • Inefficacy - lack of power to produce a desired effect
  • Lobby - an organized group of people who represent a particular area of business or society and try to influence others
  • Determined - not willing to let anything prevent you from doing what you have decided to do
  • Resist - to oppose or fight against someone or something
  • Turn around - to stop being unsuccessful and to start being successful, or to make something do this
  • Assess -  to carefully consider a situation, person, or problem in order to make a judgment
  • Integrate - to make someone become a full member of a group or society and be involved completely in its activities
  • Nuance - a slight difference that may be difficult to notice but is fairly important
  • Debate - a discussion in which people or groups state different opinions about a subject
  • Versus - used for stating that two things are being compared in order to show that they are different or that one is better than the other
  • Safeguard - to protect something or someone from being harmed or having problems
  • Overcome - to succeed in dealing with or controlling a problem
  • Veteran - someone who has a lot of experience doing a particular activity
  • Spectacular - extremely impressive
  • Victory - the fact of winning a competition or battle, or an occasion when someone wins
  • Potential - someone's or something's ability to develop, achieve, or succeed
  • Spur - something that encourages someone to do something
  • Preeminence - the fact of surpassing all others; superiority
  • Pervasive - spreading through the whole of something and becoming a very obvious feature of it
  • In the offing - likely to happen very soon
  • Looming - if something unpleasant or difficult looms, it seems likely to happen soon
  • Alliance - a group of countries, political parties, or people who have agreed to work together because of shared interests or aims
  • Resounding - complete: used for emphasizing how successful or unsuccessful someone or something is
  • Outgoing - soon to leave a position of authority or power
  • Salvage -  to succeed in achieving something in a situation or action that has been a failure
  • Stringent - stringent rules or conditions are strict and make you achieve high standards
  • Curb - to control or limit something that is harmful
  • Meddling - to become involved in a situation that you have no right to be involved in, in a way that is annoying
  • Constituency - a division of a country that elects a representative to a parliament
  • Generous - giving people more of your time or money than is usual or expected
  • Handout - an amount of money or goods given to people who need them
  • Do the trick - to do what is needed in order to achieve something
  • Transition - the process of changing from one situation, form, or state to another
  • Oust - to remove someone from a position of power, especially in order to take that position
  • Handpicked - chosen very carefully for a particular purpose
  • Overthrow - to force a leader or government out of their position of power
  • Protégé - a young person who receives help or training from an older experienced person
  • Alleged - claimed to be true, even though this has not been proved
  • Embezzlement - to steal money that people trust you to look after as part of your work
  • Scandal - a situation in which important people behave in a dishonest or immoral way that shocks people
  • Sovereign - an old unit of money in the form of a gold coin
  • Dent - to have a bad effect on something
  • Reputation - the opinion that people have about how good or how bad someone or something is
  • Credentials - personal qualities, achievements, or experiences that make someone suitable for something
  • Forge - to develop a successful relationship, especially in business or politics, with another country, organization, or person
  • Arch-rival - the main person, company etc that you compete with in sport, business etc
  • Coincide - to happen at the same time as something else
  • Commodity - something that can be bought and sold, especially a basic food product or fuel
  • Heavyweight -  someone or something that has a lot of influence, status, or knowledge
  • Grandstanding - behaviour that is intended to get public attention and approval
  • Well-being - the satisfactory state that someone or something should be in
  • Emphasis - special importance or attention that is given to one thing in particular
  • Sermon - a talk in which someone tells you how to behave in a morally correct way, although you do not want to hear it
  • Diminish - to reduce or be reduced in size or importance
  • Appetite - a feeling of being very interested in something or of wanting it very much
  • Recast -  to change the way that someone or something is or appears to be
  • Uphold - to defend or keep a principle or law, or to say that a decision that has already been made, especially a legal one, is correct
  • Strike a chord - to produce an emotion such as sympathy in someone
  • Domestic - relating to the country being talked about, and not other countries
  • Belt - an area of land where there is a particular industry, activity etc
  • Democratic - based on the principle that all people are equal and should be able to share in making decisions
  • Accountability - a situation in which people know who is responsible for something and can ask them to explain its state or quality
  • Stumbling block - a difficulty that causes mistakes or prevents progress
  • Consolidating - to make the power, position, or achievements you already have stronger or more effective so that they are likely to continue
  • Integration - the process of combining with other things in a single larger unit or system
  • Subject to something - likely to experience something or to be affected by something
  • Pardon - to forgive someone for something they have said or done
  • Statesman - an experienced political leader that many people respect
  • Gesture - an action that expresses your feelings or intentions
  • Epoch - a long period of time, especially one in which there are new developments and great change
