Hindu Editorial Topic 1 : "The mob’s bias: attack on Nigerian in Noida reflects our racial prejudices"

  • Mob - a large, angry crowd, especially one that could easily become violent
  • Bias - an attitude that you have that makes you treat someone in a way that is unfair or different from the way you treat other people
  • Racial - happening between people of different races
  • Prejudice - an unfair and unreasonable opinion or feeling, especially when formed without enough thought or knowledge
  • Chilling - frightening
  • Harbour - to think about or feel something, usually over a long period
  • Suburb - an area on the edge of a large town or city where people who work in the town or city often live
  • Thrown a spotlight - to direct public attention to a situation
  • Instance - a particular situation, event, or fact, especially an example of something that happens generally
  • Bystander - a person who is standing near and watching something that is happening but is not taking part in it
  • Intervening - to become involved in a situation in order to try to stop or change it
  • Understandably - if you say that someone is understandably feeling a particular emotion, you mean that most people would feel the same way in that situation
  • Anxious - worried and nervous
  • Rioting - to protest violently about something
  • In the wake of something - if something happens in the wake of something else, it happens after and often because of it
  • Ostensibly - appearing or claiming to be one thing when it is really something else
  • Trigger - an event or situation, etc. that causes something to start
  • Accusation - a statement saying that someone has done something morally wrong, illegal, or unkind, or the fact of accusing someone
  • Enforcement - to make people obey a law, or to make a particular situation happen or be accepted
  • Redress - to put right a wrong or give payment for a wrong that has been done
  • Breach - an act of breaking a law, promise, agreement, or relationship
  • Overemphasise - to give something too much importance or attention
  • Alarming - causing worry or fear
  • Isolation - to separate something from other things with which it is connected or mixed
  • Discrimination - treating a person or particular group of people differently, especially in a worse way from the way in which you treat other people, because of their skin colour, sex, sexuality, etc
  • Compelled - having to do something, because you are forced to or feel it is necessary
  • Boycott - to refuse to buy a product or take part in an activity as a way of expressing strong disapproval
  • Envoy - someone who is sent as a representative from one government or organization to another
  • Extreme - very severe or bad
  • Enhance - to improve the quality, amount, or strength of something
  • Mutuality - the sharing of a feeling, action, or relationship between two or more parties
  • Complementarity - the state of working usefully together
  • Solidarity - agreement between and support for the members of a group, especially a political group
  • Abundant - more than enough
  • Aspiration - something that you hope to achieve
  • Diplomacy - the management of relationships between countries
  • Determining - to control or influence something directly, or to decide what will happen
  • Bilateral - involving two groups or countries
  • Diplomat - an official whose job is to represent one country in another, and who usually works in an embassy
  • Latent - present but needing particular conditions to become active, obvious, or completely developed
  • Overcome - to defeat or succeed in controlling or dealing with something

  • Aviation - the activity of flying aircraft, or of designing, producing, and keeping them in good condition
  • Tapping - to get or make use of something
  • Mainstream - to make ideas, methods, or people become accepted by most people
  • Outcome - a result or effect of an action, situation, etc
  • Spur - to encourage an activity or development or make it happen faster
  • Despite - used for saying that something happens even though something else might have prevented it
  • Untapped - not being used yet, but existing in large amounts that could bring profits or benefits
  • Gauge - to make a judgment or guess about a situation, action, or person based on the information that you have
  • Constitute - to be or be considered as something
  • Dormant - something that is dormant is not active or growing but has the ability to be active at a later time

  • Viability - ability to work as intended or to succeed
  • Pitched for - to try to persuade someone to do something
  • Subsidy - money given as part of the cost of something, to help or encourage it to happen
  • Heartening - making you feel happier and more positive
  • Aspect - one part of a situation, problem, subject, etc
  • Hotspot - a popular and exciting place
  • Cumbersome - awkward because of being large, heavy, or not effective
  • Obvious - easy to see, recognize, or understand
  • Significant - important or noticeable
  • Multiplier effect - the way that a change in input leads to a much bigger change in output
  • Profound - very great
  • Provided - only if a particular thing happens or is done
  • Sustainable - able to continue over a period of time
  • Ease - to make or become less severe, difficult, unpleasant, painful, etc
  • Congestion - a situation in which a place is crowded with people or vehicles, so that it is difficult to move around
  • Abandoned - left without care and protection / no longer used
  • Revive - to make someone become conscious or alive again
  • No-frills - a no-frills product or a service is basic and has no extra or unnecessary details
  • Domestic - local
  • Player - someone who is very involved in an activity or organization
  • Lull - a quiet period during a very active or violent situation
  • Bidder - someone who offers to pay a particular amount of money for something
