Topic 1 : "A strategic exit"
  • Strategic - helping to achieve a plan (in business or politics)
  • Dignified - having or showing a  controlled, serious, and calm manner that is worthy of respect
  • Fevered - unnaturally excited or active
  • Speculation - the activity of guessing possible answers to a question without having enough information
  • Apparent - clearly visible or understood
  • Continuance - the state of remaining in existence or operation
  • Varied - containing or changing between several different things or types
  • Trifling -- unimportant
  • Debatable - open to discussion or argument
  • Substantive - having a strong basis in reality and so important
  • Unwillingness - unable to do something
  • Despite - without taking any notice of or being influenced by
  • Indisputably - true, impossible to doubt
  • Ridiculous -  stupid or unreasonable
  • Alleged - said by some people, although you have no proof
  • Nudged - pushed something or someone gently
  • Repercussion - the bad effect that an actio has on something
  • Enormous - very large in size
  • Credibility - the quality of being trusted and believed in
  • Impact - effect / influence
  • Portfolio - a particular job or area of responsibility of a member of a government
  • Keenly - carefully
  • Reputation -  the good opinion that people in general have about someone
  • Inflation  - continuous increase in prices
  • Faltering - losing strength
  • Climate - the general development of a situation
  • Uneasiness - worry or anxiety
  • Stemmed - originated / started
  • Inflationary  - causing price increases
  • Moribund - not active or successful
  • Crackdown - to start dealing with bad or illegal behaviour in a more serious way
  • Evergreening - a variety of legal, business and technological strategies
  • Bad loan - a loan which is unlikely to be paid back
  • Friction - disagreement or unfriendliness caused by people having different opinions
  • Brought down the curtain - to end something
  • Successor - a person that comes after another person (in a job)
  • Remit - to refer a matter to someone in authority to deal with
  • Aspiration - a hope of achieving something
  • Imperative - very important / crucial
  • Has a free hand in something - * indicates that you are available and willing to provide some kind of help
  • Rubber stamp - approve automatically without proper consideration
Topic 2 : "Indian hockey’s new stride"
  • Stride - an important positive development
  • Turf - the area that a group considers its own
  • Elite - most powerful
  • Gleaming - shining brightly
  • Podium - a raised area on which a person stands to speak to a large number of people, to conduct music, or to receive a prize in a sports competition
  • Indicator - something that shows what a situation is
  • Shootout - a fight / competition between two groups
  • Goalless - without any goals being scored (goal less)
  • Commendable - deserving praise
  • Culmination - to end with something
  • Threatened - warned
  • Derail - to prevent a plan or process from succeeding
  • Opponent - person who is competing against you in a sports event
  • Keep pace with - to make progress, or to achieve something
  • Break free - to escape from something
  • Strive - make great efforts to achieve or get something
  • Conceded - admit or agree that something is true after first denying or resisting it
  • Off-day - the day when you do not work
  • Stifled - prevented something from happening
  • Sheer - completely / nothing other than
  • Dint - as a result of something
  • Stamina - the physical and/or mental strength to do something difficult
  • Willpower - the ability to control your own thoughts and the way in which you behave
  • Ragged - not performing well / not in a good condition
