  • The 'Dynamic Tower', an 80-storey rotating tower proposed to be built in Dubai by 2020

    • The tower aims to be 420-metre-high and consist of luxury apartments, as per the proposition in 2008 by architect David Fisher.

International Affairs
  • The United Nations headquarters in Manhattan, New York celebrated Diwali for the first time, by beaming Diwali greetings on the facade of its building. 
    • The words 'Happy Diwali' were prominently displayed on the building below a diya. 
    • Note : From 2016 onward, Diwali was made an optional holiday for the UN.
  • UN member countries voted 123-38 in favour of starting negotiations on a treaty to ban nuclear weapons despite opposition from nuclear nations like US, UK, Russia, and Israel. 
    • Critics warned that without the support of the nuclear-armed states, the treaty cannot succeed. However, supporters of the treaty said it will introduce moral responsibility in them.
National Affairs
  • India celebrates Diwali, the Festival of Lights, today. 
    • People decorate their homes with rangolis and diyas during the festival, which celebrates the victory of light over darkness. 
    • In north India, people celebrate the return of King Rama to Ayodhya after defeating Ravana. 
    • Meanwhile, in south India, people celebrate Diwali as the day Lord Krishna defeated the demon Narakasura.
  • The 47th International Film Festival of India will be held in Goa between November 20 and 28. 
    • It will screen 26 feature films, including 'Airlift' and 'Sultan', and 21 non-feature films. Award-winning films on 'Swachh Bharat Abhiyan' will also be screened during the festival.
    • The festival is being held jointly by the Goa Government, Information and Broadcasting Ministry and Directorate of Film Festivals.
  • Odisha is set to unveil a new tourism policy focusing on infrastructure development at tourist sites and promoting the hotel industry, state Tourism Minister Ashok Panda announced today.
  • Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan today launched Paddy cultivation in about 56 hectares of land allotted for a proposed airport at Aranmula
    • Note : Tthe land had been lying vacant for about 20 years due to waterlogging.
General Knowledge
  • On this day (30th October) in the year 1961, the former Soviet Union detonated the 'Tsar Bomba' - world's largest nuclear weapon test in history
    • The 27-ton hydrogen bomb had a yield of 50 megatons of TNT, around 1,400 times stronger than the Hiroshima and Nagasaki nuclear bombs combined. 
    • The explosion generated a mushroom cloud 7 times higher than the Mount Everest.
New Appointments
  • Kristalina Georgieva, a former head of EU humanitarian affairs and vice-president of the European Commission, was today appointed as the Chief Executive Officer of the World Bank
  • Spain's 350-member parliament today voted 170-111 in favour of re-electing People's Party's Mariano Rajoy as the Prime Minister after a 10-month deadlock following two failed general elections.
Banking & Economy
  • Ratings agency CRISIL has downgraded rating for UCO Bank's tier-II bonds from "AA-" to "A+". 
    • This comes following higher-than-expected deterioration in asset quality, which impacted the bank's June quarter profits. 
  • The country’s largest state lender State Bank of India is going to issue equity shares on preferential basis to the Centre for capital infusion of ₹5,681 crore.
    • The transaction is subject to the approvals by the Government of India and the Reserve bank of India.
  • The Labour Ministry has decided to fix the minimum wage at ₹350 per day for unskilled agricultural labour in C-class towns in the central sphere. 
    • Note : Currently, the national floor level minimum wage is ₹160 per day.

Sports
  • The trio of Dhanush Babu, Vikram Ingale and Nikhilesh Tabhane have won India’s first ever senior international roller skating medal, by securing the bronze medal in the 3000m team relay event in Lishui, China.
  • India defeated Pakistan 3-2 in the Asian Champions Trophy hockey final in Malaysia today, to win the title for the second time.
  • Indian cricketer Jhulan Goswami has become the top-ranked female bowler in the ICC ODI rankings, seven years after she last held the spot.

International Current Affairs

  • Taiwan has announced a simplified group visa policy to encourage tourist groups from Southeast Asian countries, including India and Indonesia, to visit the nation. 
    • The group visa is free of cost for five or more people and is aimed at promoting Taiwan as a destination for exhibitions and conferences. 
  • Indian Air Force (IAF) chief Air Chief Marshal Arup Raha began his 6-day visit to Russia today.
    • The visit comes after India and Russia announced deals worth over $12 billion.
  • Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Liu Zhenmin is on a visit to North Korea.
    • This is the first visit by a high-ranking Chinese official since February.
    • This comes after the US urged China to agree on new UN Security Council sanctions against North Korea, after the isolated state conducted its fifth and biggest nuclear test recently.

National Current Affairs

  • Jammu and Kashmir has the highest life expectancy in India for all ages, barring life expectancy at birth, as per the latest data released by the Registrar General of India, custodian of census data. 
    • Important Points to Note
      • Until 2010, Kerala had the highest life expectancy in all ages. 
      • However, while Infant Mortality Rate in Kerala is 12, it's 34 in Jammu and Kashmir.
  • The Election Commission today announced that the pictures of candidates will be pasted next to their poll symbol on the electronic voting machines during elections in five states in 2017. 
    • The political parties had apprised the EC about the trend of fielding namesakes of opponent candidates to mislead the voters. 
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi has laid the foundation stone of Urja Ganga, the highly ambitious gas pipeline project in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh. 
    • The gas pipeline project aims to provide piped cooking (PNG) gas to residents of the eastern region of the country and CNG gas for the vehicles.
  • The Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) has deployed at least 100 women at 15 border posts along the Sino-India frontier, making it the first such posting of ‘mahila’ combatants in a forward area. 
    • Note : The ITBP earlier this year commissioned 500 women troops for deployment at India-China border after training them for 44 weeks in battle craft and mountain survival.
  • The government has allowed the Service voters, including armed forces personnel, to cast their votes in elections through e-postal ballot.
    • Under this system, service voters can now download the blank post ballot sent to them electronically, mark their preference and post the filled-up ballot back to their respective returning officers.

  • India’s Defence Minister Manohar Parikar has released a book titled "Born to Fly". 
    • This book is about the life of fighter pilot M P Anil Kumar, who became an icon of armed forces through his prolific writings despite having been paralysed after an accident.

  • Home Minister Rajnath Singh today left for Manama on 3-day visit to Bahrain
    • During this visit he will meet Bahrain King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, Prime Minister Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa and Interior Minister Rashid bin Abdullah Al Khalifa and will discuss various bilateral issues with them.
  • The US will deploy around 16 fifth-generation F-35 Lightning II fighter planes in Japan's Iwakuni in 2017.
    • The move will make Japan the first country with an overseas US base to get the F-35 aircraft. This comes after the US Air Force declared the first squadron of F-35 fighter aircraft manufactured by Lockheed Martin as 'combat capable'.

  • China-based Dalian Wanda's Chairman, Wang Jianlin, has retained his spot as the country's richest person with a fortune of $32.1 billion, as per Hurun's 'Richest People in China 2016' list. 
    • Further, e-commerce major Alibaba's Chairman Jack Ma and Internet firm Tencent's President Pony Ma were ranked second and third respectively. 
    • Note : There are now 754 Chinese billionaires in the world.
Business & Economy
  • Russian Minister of Trade and Industry Denis Manturov has announced that Russia is ready for a joint venture with India to produce Ka-226T utility helicopters
    • The agreement to build 200 helicopters is expected to be signed next month. 
  • India has imported the first parcel of Iranian oil in order to build an emergency storage in southern India.
    • With the move, India is aiming to hold enough oil to meet demand for two weeks. 
    • Note : The country is attempting to cover against energy risks, as it imports 80% of its oil needs.
  • Wells Fargo Chairman and CEO John Stumpf is going to retire from both the posts effective immediately. 
    • Stumpf's end at the US' second largest bank comes after the lender was fined $190 million for a dispute over its sales practices. 
    • The bank had been accused of opening over 2 million accounts without customer's permission.
  • State-owned Indian Oil plans to lay India's longest gas pipeline from Gujarat coast to Gorakhpur in eastern Uttar Pradesh, to meet the growing demands of cooking gas in the country.
    • The 1,987-kilometre pipeline via Kanpur, Varanasi and Lucknow will carry 3.75 million tons of LPG per annum.

Deaths
  • Thailand's King Bhumibol Adulyadej (88), who was the world's longest reigning monarch, passed away today.
    • Note : The 64-year-old Crown Prince Vajiralongkorn is the heir-apparent.
  • Italian playwright and actor Dario Fo (90), who won the Nobel prize for literature in 1997 passed away.

MOUs & Agreements
  • India & Brazil will sign agreement on cooperation & facilitation of investment on sidelines of upcoming BRICS Summit in Goa.
  • Indian Railways will ink a pact with Germany for running high-speed trains in the country.
    • The discussions regarding this will be held when German Minister for Transport and Digital Infrastructure Alexander Dobrindt meets Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu during the former's ongoing visit to India.
  • The Union Cabinet has given its approval for signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between India and Hungary on cooperation in the field of water management. 
    • The MoU will be signed between Union Ministry of Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation and the Ministry of Interior, Government of Hungary. 
    • Note : This is for the first time India is entering into a MoU with Hungary with wide-ranging areas on water sector.
New Appointments
  • The United Nations has named the comic book character Wonder Woman as its new Honorary Ambassador for the Empowerment of Women and Girls
    • The superhero will be formally designated for the position at a ceremony on October 21, the character’s 75th anniversary. 
    • The ceremony will also launch a campaign supporting gender equality and women’s empowerment, one of UN’s global goals.

  • American singer-songwriter Bob Dylan has been awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature 2016 "for having created new poetic expressions within the great American song tradition". 
    • He is known for writing songs like 'Blowin' in the Wind' and 'The Times They Are a-Changin'. 
    • He has won numerous awards, including twelve Grammys and one Academy Award.
  • Michael Jackson has topped Forbes' annual list of top-earning dead celebrities for the fourth consecutive year. 
    • The 'King of Pop', who died in 2009, raked in $825 million in earnings in the past year. 

Sports
  • Italian football team skipper Gianluigi Buffon won 2016's Golden Foot award at a ceremony in Monaco.

    International Affairs
    • The 28th India and Indonesia Coordinated Patrol (CORPAT) and Second Bilateral Maritime Exercise have commenced at Belawan, Indonesia in the Andaman Sea. 
      • The 17-day-long bilateral exercise will demonstrate India’s commitment to its ties with Indonesia and to maritime security in Indian Ocean Region (IOR).
    • China and Russia will hold their second anti-missile drills in 2017.
      12th October 2016 Events
      • This comes after South Korea and the US announced their plans to deploy the US Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system in South Korea to protect against any North Korean threats. 
      • Note : North Korea conducted its fifth and biggest nuclear test recently.
    • The World Health Organisation has asked all countries to introduce a sugary drinks tax (around 20%) as a way of curbing the obesity rate, especially in children. 
      • The WHO further said it will help campaigners in countries like Colombia, where the drinks industry succeeded in having an anti-sugar broadcast banned.
