  • The Eiffel Tower in Paris, France was officially inaugurated to the public on this day (31st March) in the year 1889 to commemorate the hundredth anniversary of the French Revolution. 
    • It was designed by engineer and architect Gustave Eiffel
    • Note : At the time of its inauguration, the 984 feet tall tower became the tallest man-made structure in the world, a title it held for 41 years.
  • Central America's smallest nation, El Salvador, has become the first country in the world to ban metal mining nationwide. 
    • The new law bans all exploration, extraction, and processing of metals both in open pits and mines. 
    • Note : According to a UN report, the level of environmental pollution in El Salvador is among the highest in the region.
  • 3rd edition of G20 Framework Working Group (FWG) meeting was held at Varanasi (Uttar Pradesh). 
    • The 2-day meeting took place under the G20 German presidency, and was co-hosted by the Union Finance Ministry and the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). 
    • Inaugurated by : Shaktikanta Das (Economic Affairs Secretary) 
    • Headed by : Dinesh Sharma (Special secretary in the Finance ministry)

  • Rajasthan Diwas is being celebrated today.
    • This day marks the 68th anniversary of the unification of the erstwhile princely states in the region of Rajputana into the State of Rajasthan. 
    • The state came into being on this day (30th March) in 1949 after unification of 22 princely states.

  • The Kanha Tiger Reserve (Madhya Pradesh) has become the first tiger reserve in India to officially introduce a mascot, which has been named "Bhoorsingh the Barasingha"
    • The Barasingha or swamp deer is the state animal of Madhya Pradesh. Bhoorsingh was chosen among four variations by the Madhya Pradesh forest department.
  • MPs played football in Parliament today as part of Sports Minister Vijay Goel's exercise to promote the U-17 FIFA World Cup, which is being held in India in October. 
    • Goel distributed footballs to all MPs, asking them to promote the game at village, block and district levels.

International Current Affairs
  • US President Donald Trump would be hosting PM Narendra Modi later this year, the White House announced today.
  • The US House of Representatives has passed a bill to scrap a Barack Obama-era rule that required internet providers to get customers' permission before sharing their browsing history with other companies. 
    • The rule also required internet providers to protect that data from hackers and inform customers of breaches. 
    • The bill will become law once US President Donald Trump signs it.
  • The British government today delivered the formal notification of the country's intention to leave the European Union to EU President Donald Tusk after 44 years of membership.
    • This comes after UK citizens voted to leave the EU in a referendum in June. 
    • UK PM Theresa May delivered a statement in the Parliament, confirming that the Brexit process has begun.
  • The Scottish Parliament today voted in favour of holding a second UK independence referendum
    • Lawmakers voted 69-59 to back First Minister Nicola Sturgeon and seek permission from the UK government for a ballot to be held between autumn 2018 and spring 2019. 
    • Note : Prime Minister Theresa May had earlier ruled out plans for a new Scottish referendum before Brexit.
  • The US, Britain and France are among almost 40 countries that will not join talks on a nuclear weapons ban treaty starting at the UN on Monday, US ambassador to UN Nikki Haley said. 
    • She further said that the countries skipping the negotiations are instead committed to the Non-Proliferation Treaty which is aimed at preventing the spread of nuclear weapons.
  • Cambodia has officially banned selling and exporting human breast milk to the US after reports exposed how women were turning to the controversial trade to boost incomes in the country.
    • Earlier, the UNICEF condemned the trade, calling it exploitative.
Awards & Honors
  • Indian Army chief General Bipin Rawat was conferred the honorary rank of General of the Nepal Army by country's President Bidhya Devi Bhandari today. 
    • Rawat has arrived in Kathmandu for a four-day official visit. 
    • Note : The two countries have a tradition of conferring such titles on the chiefs of their armies since 1950 to signify the close military-to-military ties.

  • Canada is going to host the 9th edition of World Environmental Education Congress (WEEC) in Vancouver from 9th to 15th September 2017. 
    • The World Environmental Education Congress (WEEC) is an international event that seeks to addresses issues related education for environment and sustainability.
    • Theme of the year 2017 : “Culture/Environment: Weaving New Connections”.
National Current Affairs
  • Parliament today passed the Mental Healthcare Bill, 2016, which provides for healthcare and services to people with mental illness and also decriminalises suicide.
    • The bill aims to provide for the right to better healthcare for mentally-ill patients.
    • The bill also allows a mentally ill person to have the right to restrict release of information with respect to the illness and make a complaint about deficiencies in provision of services
    • This bill decriminalises attempt to suicide by separating it from the Indian Penal Code. 
    • Health Minister : J P Nadda
  • The 3rd edition of ‘World Conference on Environment’ was recently held in New Delhi.
    • This conference was organized by the National Green Tribunal (NGT) and inaugurated by the President Pranab Mukherjee. 
    • The 2-day conference discussed various issues like air pollution, water pollution, economics and clean technology, and the role of courts and tribunals for environmental protection. 
  • The Union government today launched 'e-CinePramaan', the Online Film Certification System of the Central Board of Film Certification. 
    • This will make the process for films to obtain a certificate fully digital and will include QR Codes to check fraudulent certificates.
  • Osmania University (OU) in Hyderabad (Telagana) is going to host the 105th Indian Science Congress (ISC) from 3rd to 7th January 2018. 
    • Around 25 Nobel laureates are going to participate in the conference.
    • Theme of the year 2017 : ‘Science and Technology–Reaching the Unreached’. 
    • It will be the 7th time Hyderabad hosting ISC.
MOUs & Agreements
  • India and Nepal have signed an agreement to renew supply of petroleum to Nepal for a period of five years i.e. till 2022. 
    • The renewed agreement, which was overseen by the Petroleum Ministers of both countries, was signed even as both sides pledged to build a new pipeline for LPG. 
New Appointments
  • Indian-American Vanita Gupta, who headed civil rights division in the Department of Justice in the Obama Administration, has been appointed as President and CEO of ‘The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights’.
    • She will replace Wade Henderson who is stepping down after more than two decades.
    • With this, she became the first woman to head the prestigious organisation.
  • Hong Kong's electoral committee has chosen Carrie Lam, former deputy chief and China's favoured candidate, as the autonomous territory's new Chief Executive.
    • With 777 out of 1,194 votes, Lam will become the first female leader of Hong Kong
    • Important Note : Hong Kong's Chief Executive is not chosen by a public vote but by an electoral committee dominated by pro-China electors.
  • Pakistan has allowed former army chief General Raheel Sharif to head a Saudi Arabia-led Islamic military alliance, which has been formed to combat terrorism especially the Islamic State.
    • Raheel is expected to work on the structure of the 39-nation alliance.
  • Dr.Randeep Guleria was appointed as the new Director of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS, Delhi
    • He is going to replace Dr. M C Mishra, who had retired in January 2017 from the post of AIIMS director. 
    • Note : Guleria is the first Indian to get a Doctorate of Medicine (DM) in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine.
Banking & Economic Affairs
  • The government today announced that the use of virtual currencies like Bitcoin is not authorised by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and could result in breach of anti-money laundering laws. 
    • The RBI earlier warned that any user and trader dealing with virtual currencies would be doing so at his/her own risk and could face potential financial, and security risks.
  • The Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority today approved a budget of nearly ₹800 crore for its various projects. 
    • The decision was taken during a meeting chaired by Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. 
    • A statement said that the allocation will benefit the Shivajinagar-Hinjawadi metro and Pune-Daund suburban railway projects, among others.
Science & Technology
  • The Indian Navy has de-inducted TU142M Long Range Maritime Patrol aircraft after 29 years of dedicated service to the nation and 30,000 hours of accident-free flying. 
    • The aircraft was formally de-inducted at a ceremony held at INS Rajali naval air station in Arakkonam, Tamil Nadu. 
    • Now its role will be taken on by the newly inducted Boeing P-8I aircraft.
  • A heavily modified Ford GT sports car today became the world's fastest car by hitting a top speed of 472.5 kmph in just one mile. 
    • The previous world record was of 455.7 kmph, set back in 2012 by a 1,700 horsepower Ford GT. 
Deaths
  • South African anti-apartheid leader Ahmed Kathrada (87) passed away.
    • Kathrada spent 26 years in jail, many of them alongside former President Nelson Mandela for acts of sabotage against South Africa's white minority government. 
    • He was also one of the most senior leaders to criticise President Jacob Zuma's presidency.
Awards & Honors
  • Indian-origin British director Gurinder Chadha was honoured with the 2017 Sikh Jewel Award for her contribution to British cinema. 
    • Some of her noted films include Bend It Like Beckham, Bhaji on the Beach and Bride and Prejudice
    • Her latest film, “Viceroy’s House” is based on true events of the final five months of British rule in India and partition of India.
Sports Current Affairs
  • India defeated Australia by 8 wickets in the fourth Test at Dharamsala today to reclaim the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2-1. 
    • Note : Dharamsala Test is the first win for Ajinkya Rahane as India's captain, who was leading India for the first time in Virat Kohli's absence.
  • Team India was given the ICC Test mace and a $1 million cheque (₹6.5 crore) by former cricketer Sunil Gavaskar for being the number one Test team. 
    • Note : ICC awards the annual cash prize to the team holding the number one rank on April 1. 
  • Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin received the Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy from former Indian cricketer Kapil Dev for being named the ICC Cricketer of the Year as well as the ICC Test Cricketer of the Year.
    • Ashwin, who became the first Test cricketer to claim over 80 wickets in a single season of Test cricket, is the second-ranked bowler in Tests.
  • Australian Cricketer and world’s fastest bowlers in his prime Shaun Tait announced his retirement from all forms of cricket. 
    • In his 15-year career, he had featured in 35 ODIs, 12 T20 Internationals and only three Tests. 
    • He was an integral part of Australia’s victorious campaign in the 2007 World Cup in the West Indies.

  • Greek Migration Minister Ioannis Mouzalas has today announced that the country would cease taking back refugees under the Dublin regulation as its limited capacities to host people are already on the brink of collapse.
    • The regulation was put on hold in 2011 over problems in the country's asylum system.
  • A court in Yemen's capital Sanaa, controlled by the Houthi rebels, has sentenced the country's President Mansour Hadi and six other top government officials to death for high treason. 
    • The court found Hadi guilty of instigating attacks by Saudi Arabia to suppress the rebels opposing him.

  • The UK has announced a ban on electronic devices larger than mobiles, including laptops and tablets, from cabin baggage on flights from six Middle Eastern countries. 
    • The ban affects travellers from Turkey, Lebanon, Jordan, Egypt, Tunisia and Saudi Arabia.

    • It is an international initiative by the Nature Forever Society of India in collaboration with the Eco-Sys Action Foundation (France) and numerous other national and international organisations across the world.
    • This day is designated to raise awareness of the house sparrow and other common birds to urban environments, and of threats to their populations.
    • This year's theme :  I LOVE Sparrows
  • The Romanian government has agreed to collaborate with Italian authorities to stop abuses against women migrants in Italy. 
    • This comes after an investigation found that thousands of Romanian agricultural workers were being sexually exploited by their Italian employers.
  • Italy has been ranked the world's healthiest country by Bloomberg Global Health Index, with a citizen expected to live up to 89 years.
    • Italy is followed by Iceland, Switzerland, Singapore and Australia.
    • Americans, Canadians, and Brits were found to be suffering from higher blood pressure, cholesterol, and poorer mental health compared to the Italians.

  • Norway is going to construct the world's first ship tunnel to improve safety in the Stad peninsula
    • The 1.7-kilometre-long Stad Ship Tunnel will be capable of accommodating 16,000-tonne freight and passenger ships. 
    • The Norwegian Coastal Administration will embark on a feasibility study for the project, which is expected to cost approximately NOK 2 billion (around ₹1,548 crore).
  • The SRCC's Global Millennium Summit 2017 was concluded today at Marriott Hotel, Al Jaddaf, Dubai.
    • The two day summit was held during 18th and 19th March 2017.
    • Inaugural ceremony was addressed by Vijay Goel (Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports).
    • Indian Ambassador to UAE, Navdeep Suri addressed the concluding session of the summit.

  • The Punjab cabinet has decided to provide 33 per cent reservation for Women in all government jobs.
    • The decision was taken in the first cabinet meeting chaired by Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh at Chandigarh.
    • In a bid to end VIP culture in the state, the Punjab Cabinet has also decided to ban the use of beacons on government vehicles, foreign travel of ministers for two years and hosting banquets at state expense.

  • The US and China today pledged to work together in addressing the threat posed by North Korea's nuclear programme
    • Both China and the United States' efforts had not succeeded in curbing the threat, therefore, the two countries will together persuade North Korea to move away from the development of their nuclear weapons, US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said.
National Current Affairs
  • Chandigarh administration has declared the state highways as 'major district roads' in order to avoid closure of liquor vends in the city. 
    • This comes after Supreme Court directed all states and union territories to close liquor vends on all national and state highways. All major roads in Chandigarh were state highways, as per a notification issued nearly 20 years ago.
  • The Union Labour Ministry has proposed a labour code which will provide social security cover to the entire workforce in the country, including self-employed and agricultural workers. 
    • In this regard, it has proposed a draft code on Social Security and Welfare with an aim to provide social security cover to the entire workforce in the country of about 45 crore workers.

  • UK's fertility regulator has granted the first license to use "three-parent baby" technique to a fertility clinic in Newcastle. 
    • The procedure involves in-vitro fertilisation of an egg from two mothers with the father's sperm to prevent incurable genetic diseases in one of the mothers being passed on to the child. Notably, UK is the only country to legalise three-parent babies.
  • India was ranked low at 148th in recently released 2017 Women in Politics Map report,

  • Saudi Arabia and China today signed deals worth $65 billion (over ₹4 lakh crore) on the first day of Saudi King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud's visit to China. 
    • The deals included building refining and chemical plants in China.
    • Saudi has sought to boost oil sales to China, the world's second-largest oil market, after losing market share to Russia last year.
  • India along with other countries in the South East Asian Region have signed World Health Organisation’s (WHO) Call To end Tuberculosis (TB) by 2030 in the region.
    • It was signed by Health ministers from countries in WHO South-East Asia Region (WHO SEARO) during two-day ministerial meeting towards ending TB in the region held in New Delhi.

  • Women will take 50 years to equal the number of men in legislatures across 193 UN nations, a report by the Inter-Parliamentary Union and UN Women has revealed today. 
    • Percentage of women in parliaments was 23.3% in 2016, up from 22.6% in 2015.

  • The Union Cabinet today approved the National Health Policy 2017 aimed at providing affordable healthcare to all. 
    • The draft policy aims to raise public healthcare expenditure to 2.5% of GDP from the current 1% and to ensure availability of 2 hospital beds per 1,000 population. 
    • It also proposes free drugs, free diagnostics, and free emergency services.
  • The Gujarat High Court today ruled that reserved category candidates availing age relaxation cannot claim a place in the general category merit list for government jobs.
  • Braille maps and platform indicators were unveiled at the Bengaluru City railway station today, making it the second blind-friendly station after Mysuru railway station in India. 
    • Two Braille scripted maps with directions to platforms, ticket counters, and restrooms were inaugurated. 
    • Further, 600 Braille platform indicators were placed along the railings of the old Foot Over Bridge and subway.
  • The Karnataka government has capped the price of movie tickets at all cinema theatres, including multiplexes, in the state at ₹200
    • The state government also made the screening of Kannada and regional language films in one screen mandatory between 1:30 PM and 7:30 PM at all the state's multiplex cinemas.

    • In India this day is celebrated as Viswa Upabhokta Adhikar Diwas. 
    • On March 15, 1962 US President John F. Kennedy gave a speech on consumer rights which led to the creation of the Consumer Bill of Rights.
    • Consumer rights activist Anwar Fazal later proposed the observance of a "World Consumer Rights Day" marking that date, and from 15 March 1983 consumer organizations began observing that date as an occasion to promote basic rights of consumers.

  • The Pakistan Army is set to send an army brigade to Saudi Arabia to protect the country's borders from Islamic State and Houthi rebels in the ongoing Yemen war
    • The two-year-old war in Yemen has killed more than 10,000 people and injured another 40,000 in which Saudi Arabia is supporting Yemeni President Mansour Hadi against the Houthi rebels.
  • Representatives of 23 Asian countries are meeting in Islamabad, Pakistan to talk about creating a regional block similar to the European Union, Pakistan officials announced today. 
    • The chairman of Pakistan's Upper House of the Parliament, Raza Rabbani, urged the participants to take steps to ensure that the destiny of Asia must not be directed by the "capitalist" West.

  • The UK Parliament today passed the Brexit bill, paving the way for the government to trigger Article 50 so that it can leave the European Union.
    • The bill is expected to receive Royal Assent and become a law soon. 
    • The passage of the bill allows UK Prime Minister Theresa May to begin talks on Britain's exit from the European Union.
  • Pakistan is going to conduct its first national census in 19 years, starting tomorrow with the assistance of over 2 lakh troops and 1 lakh civilian enumerators. 
    • The 70-day door-to-door campaign will conclude in two phases at a cost of over Pakistani Rupee 1,850 crore.
