International Current Affairs
  • Bangladesh Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan has left Dhaka on a 3 day visit to India.
    • During this visit, he will attend the 7th India- Bangladesh Home Minister level bilateral talks
    • Issues like trans border security, cross border trafficking and border management are likely to come up for discussion during the talks.
    • Note : The 6th round of home minister-level talks was held in Dhaka in  July last year.
  • US President Donald Trump has issued an executive order imposing a freeze on Venezuelan government assets in the US
    • The move is reportedly aimed at forcing Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro out of the office over human rights abuses. 
    • Note : The US has recognised Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guaido as the country’s legitimate president and imposed sanctions on the Maduro regime.
National Current Affairs
  • To curb honour killings and Mob Lynching in the state, the Rajasthan legislative assembly passed 2 important bills.
    • 'The Rajasthan Protection from Lynching Bill, 2019' and ‘The Rajasthan Prohibition of Interference with the Freedom of Matrimonial Alliances in the Name of Honour and Tradition Bill, 2019’ was passed by the assembly with a voice vote amid vociferous protest by the opposition BJP, which wanted the Bill to be referred to select committee.
    • Severe Punishment provisions have been made for the convicts in both the bills.
    • Note : With this, Rajasthan has become the second state after Manipur which passed a law to curb lynching cases.
  • Arunachal Pradesh has flagged of 5 Anti-Riot police vehicle, also known as Vajra, from Police Headquarter in Itanagar today. 
    • This is the 1st set of anti-riot vehicles introduced in the state police department.
    • These vehicles come with special features for quick response, automatic multi-barrel launchers for tear gas, with a capacity of 12 persons and a battery backup for long hours stuck in the rioting crowd.
  • Lok Sabha has passed Supreme Court (Number of Judges) Amendment Bill, 2019.
    • This bill increases the number of Supreme Court judges from the present 30 to 33 (excluding Chief Justice of India). 
    • This Bill amends Supreme Court (Number of Judges) Ac, 1956. 
Science & Technology
  • In yet another significant development in its journey towards the Moon, India’s lunar probe Chandrayaan-2 has successfully completed its 5th and final earth-bound orbit-raising manoeuvre today.
    • The manoeuvre led the spacecraft to reach an orbit of substantial apogee, that is the farthest point from the Earth, at nearly one lakh-forty three thousand kilometres.
    • Chandrayaan-2 is expected to reach an orbit around the Moon on the 20th of this month. 
    • It will have a touch down on the lunar South Pole on 7th September.
New Appointments
  • 1986-batch IAS officer Guruprasad Mohapatra has assumed charge as the Secretary of the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), Commerce Ministry. 
    • Mohapatra, who earlier served as the Airports Authority of India (AAI) Chairman, took over the role from Ramesh Abhishek.
Sports Current Affairs
  • Maharashtra state government's initiative Mission Shakti, to train athletes from tribal areas for international sports events such as Olympics has been recently launched. 
    • It was launched by Bollywood Actor Aamir Khan
    • Mission Shakti will help Maharashtra government to hunt for talented athletes in remote areas of Chandrapur and Gadchiroli. 
    • The mission is directed towards 6 sporting disciplines namely- archery, shooting, volleyball, swimming, weightlifting and gymnastics.
  • South African Fast bowler Dale Steyn announced his retirement from Test cricket, ending his nearly 15-year career in the longest format as South Africa's highest wicket-taker with 439 wickets. 
    • Note : The 36-year-old is the only fast bowler to take five-wicket haul against 9 Test-playing nations. 
  • India topped the latest ICC Test team rankings.
    • New Zealand is placed 2nd and South Africa is in 3rd position. 
    • India skipper Virat Kohli retains his number one position in the latest ICC Test batsmen’s rankings.
  • Off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has been chosen as the Professional Cricketers' Association (PCA) player of the match for July for his brief stint in County Championship for Nottinghamshire.
