International Current Affairs
- External Affairs Minister Dr. S Jaishankar will be paying a 3-day visit to China from 11th of this month.
- This will be Dr S Jaishankar's 1st visit to China after assuming office.
- During the visit, the External Affairs Minister along with his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi will co-chair the 2nd meeting of the India-China High-Level Mechanism on Cultural and People-to-People exchanges in Beijing on 12th of this month.
National Current Affairs
- The J&K Reorganisation Bill, 2019 aimed at bifurcating Jammu and Kashmir into two Union Territories has been passed by the Rajya Sabha.
- The bill proposes Jammu and Kashmir as a Union Territory with a legislature, while Ladakh as a Union Territory without a legislature.
- As many as 125 members favoured the Bill, while 61 opposed it.
- Important Note : A UT with a legislature, like Delhi, has a partial statehood status, an elected CM and a council of ministers. Lieutenant Governor in such a UT acts on aid and recommendation of council of ministers but doesn't need their approval on every matter. A UT without a legislature, like Chandigarh, is ruled directly by Centre and doesn't have a CM.
- Lok Sabha has passed the Surrogacy (Regulation) Bill, 2019.
- This bill prohibits commercial surrogacy, but allows altruistic surrogacy.
- It defines surrogacy as a practice where a woman gives birth to a child for an intending couple with the intention to hand over the child after the birth to the intending couple.
- Lok Sabha today passed the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Bill, 2019.
- This Bill prohibits the discrimination against a transgender person, including denial of service or unfair treatment in relation to education, employment, healthcare, access to, or enjoyment of goods, facilities, opportunities available to the public.
- The Bill defines a transgender person as one whose gender does not match the gender assigned at birth.
- The Bill provides every transgender person shall have a right to reside and be included in his household.
- National Academy of Art, Lalit Kala Akademi, celebrated its 65th Foundation Day in New Delhi today.
- The event was inaugurated by Culture and Tourism Minister Prahlad Singh Patel.

- The Chinese yuan today fell below the symbolically important threshold of 7 against the US dollar to its lowest level in over a decade, amid trade tensions with the US.
- China's central bank attributed the fall to "trade protectionism and new tariffs on China."
- Note : The US last week announced a 10% tariff on additional $300 billion of Chinese imports.
- Andhra Pradesh state government is going to reopen talks with the World Bank and Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) by next week for funding the state's Amaravati capital city project.
- Last month, World Bank and AIIB had withdrawn support worth $500 million for building Amaravati.
- Microsoft Co-founder Bill Gates has regained the world's 2nd-richest person spot with $106 billion wealth, as per Bloomberg Billionaires Index.
- This comes days after French luxury goods tycoon Bernard Arnault's wealth surpassed Gates' wealth.
- Union Government has approved Rs 4,900 crore Kosi-Mechi Interlinking project for interlinking of Kosi and Mechi rivers of Bihar.
- This is the 2nd major river interlinking project in the country to be approved by Central Government after the Ken-Betwa project in Madhya Pradesh.

- For 1st time in world, France’s Franky Zapata successfully crossed English Channel on a jet-powered hoverboard.
Deaths
- Yesteryear cricket commentator Anant Setalvad (80) died today.
- Setalvad had started his radio commentary stint in the pre-TV days and had shared the mike with the likes of former Test opener and ex-selection panel chief Vijay Merchant on All India Radio.

- The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) laid foundation stone for Space Situational Awareness Control Centre in Bengaluru, Karnataka to protect Indian satellites from space debris.
- It will facilitate intensified activities foreseen for Space Situational Awareness & Management (SSAM), in view of the increasing debris population and operational space assets.
