International Current Affairs
  • Today (10th August) is World Biofuel Day.
    • This day is observed every year on 10th August to create awareness about the importance of non-fossil fuels as an alternative to conventional fossil fuels and to highlight the various efforts made by the Government in the biofuel sector.
    • Since 2014, the Government of India has taken a number of initiatives to increase blending of biofuels.
    • The major interventions include administrative price mechanism for ethanol, simplifying the procurement procedures of OMCs, amending the provisions of Industries (Development & Regulation) Act, 1951 and enabling lignocellulosic route for ethanol procurement.
    • Theme of the World Biofuel Day 2019 : “Production of Biodiesel from Used Cooking Oil (UCO)
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be on a 2-day visit to Bhutan during 17th & 18th of August 2019. 
    • During this visit, the PM will hold talks on issues like strengthening the bilateral development partnership and collaborating in the hydropower sector, among others.
  • US President Donald Trump has identified India along with 22 countries as a major drug transit or major illicit drug producing country
National Current Affairs
  • President Ram Nath Kovind has gave assent to the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act, 2019 which is aimed at bifurcation of Jammu and Kashmir into two Union Territories. 
    • With this, J&K and Ladakh will officially become Union Territories from October 31
  • The Centre has approved an off-campus centre of IIM-Jammu in Srinagar and sanctioned ₹51.8 crore to set it up, IIM-Jammu Director BS Sahay confirmed. 
  • Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has approved the extension of Child Care Leave (CCL) benefits to single male service personnel and certain relaxations of it in case of women officers in defence forces.
    • This is in line with a recent order of the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) extending similar benefits to civilian employees.
    • Note : Presently, CCL is being granted to woman officers in defence forces. 
  • Lok Sabha Secretariat will be soon made paperless so that public money worth crores of rupees can be saved by decreasing the use of paper.
  • To promote water conservation activities among school students, the union ministers Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank and Gajendra Singh Shekhawat have launched the Samagra Shiksha-Jal Suraksha drive.
    • The Department of School Education and Literacy under the HRD Ministry has started the drive to promote water conservation activities among school students so that they can become competent, conscientious and committed citizens of the nation.
  • In Uttar Pradesh, a series of world records have been made yesterday in the massive plantation drive Vriksharopan Mahakumbh on the occasion of 77th anniversary of Quit India Movement. 
    • More than 22 crore saplings were planted at 12.2 lakh locations under the drive in state. 
    • Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath said that the state would plant 25 crore trees next year.

  • The UK Economy shrunk in the April-June quarter for the 1st time in nearly 7 years amid Brexit uncertainties and weakening global growth. 
    • The GDP of the world's 5th-biggest economy declined 0.2%, down from a 0.5% expansion in the first quarter. 
    • The UK economy has not contracted since the final three months of 2012.

  • Mounir Baatour, an openly gay man has launched his bid to run for President in Tunisia.
    • With this, he became the 1st homosexual person to run for office in the Arab world

  • Uttarakhand has been declared as the Most Film-Friendly State at 66th National Film Awards. 
    • Important Note : This is the 1st time that this category has been added to the list of National Awards.

  • Union Home Minsiter Amit Shah is going to release a book titled “ Listening, Learning & Leading”. 
    • This book chronicles the two years in office by Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu.
    • It captures the glimpses of the Vice President’s 330 public engagements across the country in the last two years. It details his important diplomatic engagements including his visits to 19 countries across 4 continents.
    • The book also showcases the Vice President’s feat as the Rajya Sabha Chairman in enhancing its effectiveness and promoting its efficiency.
