International Current Affairs
  • Today (19th August 2019) is World Photography Day.
    • This day aims to inspire photographers across the planet to share single photo with world.
  • Today is World Humanitarian Day (WHD).
    • This day is observed every year on 19 August to recognize work of humanitarian personnel and those who have lost their lives working for humanitarian causes.
    • World Humanitarian Day 2019 is set to celebrate 'Women Humanitarians' and their undying contribution in making the world a better place.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi will embark on a 3-day visit to United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Bahrain beginning 23rd of this month. 
    • Modi will first travel to UAE where he will meet the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and discuss bilateral, regional and international matters of mutual interest.
    • He will receive the Order of Zayed (the highest civil decoration of the UAE) which was conferred earlier in April 2019 in recognition of the distinguished leadership of Prime Minister Modi for giving a big boost to bilateral relations between the two countries.  
    • From UAE, the Prime Minister will leave for Bahrain on August 24 on a 2-day visit.
      • It will  be the 1st ever Prime Ministerial visit from India to that country.
    • During his visit, Mr  Modi will hold talks with his counterpart Prince Shaikh Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa on the entire spectrum of bilateral relations as well as on regional and international issues of mutual interest.
    • Mr Modi will also launch the renovation of Shreenathji temple in Manama. 
  • External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar will be arriving in Dhaka tonight on a 3-day visit to Bangladesh.
    • He will be holding a meeting with his Bangladeshi counterpart Dr A K Abdul Momen tomorrow. 
    • He is also scheduled to call on Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
    • Both the leaders are expected to discuss issues of mutual importance during the visit.
    • Note : It will be the 1st Bangladesh visit of External Affairs Minister after the new government took oath in India in May.
  • The 5th Meeting of India-Nepal Joint Commission will be held in Kathmandu during 211st and 22nd August 2019. 
    • Minister for External Affairs of Dr S. Jaishankar and Nepal’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Pradeep Kumar Gyawali will co-chair the meeting and lead their respective delegations.
    • The meeting will review the overall state of bilateral relations and various areas of cooperation such as connectivity and economic partnership, trade and transit, power and water resources, culture, education and other matters of mutual interest. 
Science & Technology
  • Google Assistant, an artificial intelligence-powered[1] virtual assistant developed by search engine giant Google beat Amazon's Alexa and Apple's Siri on smartphones in an IQ test conducted by US-based research-driven venture capital firm Loup Ventures. 
    • The leading digital assistants were asked 800 questions each. Google Assistant was able to correctly answer 92.9% of the questions versus Siri at 83.1% and Alexa at 79.8%.
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • The governor of Reserve Bank of India (RBI), Shaktikant Das has ruled out ordering an asset quality review of the large NBFCs but he reiterated the regulatory resolve to not let any large NBFC fail.
    • He said at the moment there is no such proposal to have an asset quality review on NBFC but also added that 500odd NBFCs and HFCs are closely being monitored by the apex bank and the monitoring and supervision include all aspects of their functioning, including their capital adequacy, stability, their cash inflow, outflow.
  • To give boost to the chemical industry, India’s 1st Central Institute of Chemical Engineering and Technology (CICET) will be set up in Gujarat
    • The Central Government is also planning to set up Plastic Waste Management Centre in Ahmedabad to find out solutions to systematicsegregation and recycling of plastic waste.
Deaths
  • Former Bihar Chief Minister Jagannath Mishra (82) passed away.
    • Mishra, who was the Chief Minister of Bihar 3 times, was suffering from prolonged illness. 
    • He served as a minister in the Union Cabinet and was formerly a member of Indian National Congress, before leaving Congress to join the Nationalist Congress Party and later the Janata Dal (United).
New Appointments
  • Paytm today promoted its Chief Financial Officer (CFO), Madhur Deora, as President
    • Prior to joining Paytm in 2016, Deora served as Managing Director in Citigroup's investment banking business. 
    • Paytm CEO : Vijay Shekhar Sharma
Sports Current Affairs
  • Mumbai is set to host the World Youth Chess Championship in October 2019. 
    • World's 4th-youngest Grandmaster Rameshbabu Praggnanandhaa will also be a part of the tournament. "
  • Indian sprinters Hima Das and Muhammed Anas won a Gold each in women's and men's 300m races respectively at the Athleticky Mitink Reiter event in the Czech Republic.
    • Important Note : This was Hima Das's 6th Gold in European races since July 2. 
  • The BWF World Championships 2019 Badminton torunament began today at Basel in Switzerland. 
    • It will be held from 19th to 25th August 2019. 
    • 359 competitors from 45 nations are participating in the tournament.
    • India's Sai Praneeth B will clash with Jason Anthony Ho-Shue of Canada, while hs prannoy will take on Finnish Eetu Antti Oskari Heino today.
