International Current Affairs
- Sri Lanka has extended by another month, the state of emergency imposed after the Easter Sunday attacks.
- This is the 4th time emergency provisions have been imposed after the attacks which killed 268 people including 45 foreigners.
- Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's ruling coalition secured a majority in the upper house of parliament in elections today.
- According to vote count Abe's Liberal Democratic Party and its junior partner Komeito had won 64 seats in the upper house after two hours of voting.
- The Right to Information (Amendment) Bill, 2019 was passed in Loksabha today.
- This bill proposes to give Centre the power to set tenure and salaries of Chief Information Commissioner and Information Commissioners .
- The Narendra Modi Government has completed 50 Days in office in its second term.
- On the 50th day, the government laid down the vision of India becoming a 5-trillion dollar economy by 2024-25.
- 50 Days of Modi Government : Highlights
- Pension schemes for farmers, small traders and unorganized workers, an extension of PM-KISAN to all farmers and setting up of a Jal Shakti ministry have been fulfilled already.
- Removal of tainted bureaucrats across many departments has happened. A cleanup of J&K Bank, the key to security in the state, started in the first 50 days.
- The Budget 2019 laid a roadmap for a five trillion dollar economy as well as for doubling farmer income. It talked of electric vehicles, of the mission of taking electricity and cooking gas to every home. It also talked of ending angel tax and of starting a faceless, seamless tax assessment interface.
- Labour reforms, enacting strong laws against frauds who dupe the poor, death penalty for child sexual assault, higher MSP for Kharif crops were among the pro-people decisions taken by the government in the last fifty days.
- PM Modi invited BIMSTEC leaders for his swearing-in. PM Modi was one of the most sought-after leaders for pull-aside meetings in the recent G-20 Summit. He visited Sri Lanka and Maldives and showed his strong belief in Neighbourhood First policy. He strongly articulated India’s position against terror at the SCO Summit and also led the world in celebrating International Yoga Day.
- Space mission: Gaganyaan - First human space flight by India by the 75th anniversary of Independence in 2022; Chandrayaan-2 to help trace back the origin and evolution of the moon and studies to address the origin of water on moon will be launched tomorrow. Solar mission Aditya L1 is scheduled for launch in 2020 to study Sun’s Corona and its impact on climatic changes. Mission to Venus - tentative launch expected in 2023, to study the atmosphere and surface topography of Venus.
- Kerala Tourism is organizing a 5 day Music Festival titled Nishagandhi Monsoon Ragas in Thiruvananthapuram.
- This festival marks the state’s successful entry into music tourism and seeks to attract more tourists to Kerala.
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
- The 11th biennial edition of DefExpo India - 2020 is scheduled to be held for the 1st time in Uttar Pradesh capital Lucknow in February 2020.
- The 4-day event, beginning from 5th of February, will offer an excellent opportunity for the Indian defence industry to showcase its capabilities and promote its export potential.

- An inter-ministerial government committee today recommended a ban on Private Cryptocurrencies and imposing fines and penalties on activities related to digital currencies.
- The panel cited "risks associated and volatility in the prices of private cryptocurrencies".
Deaths
- The Director General of UN nuclear watchdog International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Yukiya Amano (72), has passed away.
- Amano, a Japanese diplomat, was reappointed in 2017 to a third four-year term.
Science & Technology
- The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) today successfully launched 'Chandrayaan-2'.
- This is India's 2nd Moon mission and the world's 1st-ever mission aimed towards a soft landing on the Moon's south polar region.
- India's most powerful launcher GSLV MkIII-M1 was assigned to carry Chandrayaan-2 to its designated orbit. Chandrayaan-2's lander 'Vikram' will execute the soft landing on the Moon and 'Pragyan' rover will communicate with it.
- The Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has banned manufacture, sale and distribution of antibiotic, Colistin as well as its formulations for food producing animals, poultry, aqua farming and animal feed supplements.
- The ban is announced in a bid to preserve drug’s efficacy in humans.
- It is a valuable, last-resort antibiotic that saves lives in critical care units. It is effective against most Gram-negative bacilli. It is also known as polymyxin E.
- Indigenously produced lightweight bullet proof jacket Bhabha Kavach was launched at International Police Expo 2019 held at Pragati Maidan, New Delhi.
- This jacket is a major breakthrough for Paramilitary Forces and Indian armed forces.
New Appointments
- Acharya Devvrat took the oath as the new Governor of Gujarat today.
- Acting Chief Justice of Gujarat High Court administered the oath in presence of outgoing Governor Shri O.P. Kohli, Chief Minister Vijay Rupani, and Speaker of the state Assembly Rajendra Trivedi along with other dignitaries at Rajbhavan campus in Gandhinagar.
- Devvrat took the oath in the Sanskrit language.
Sports Current Affairs
- World number five PV Sindhu won her 1st Silver medal of the year after finishing second at the Indonesia Open today.
- She lost her first final of the year to world number four Akane Yamaguchi (Japan).
- Note : Sindhu will next play the Japan Open, which is scheduled to begin on July 23.
