International Current Affairs
  • 8th Edition of ‘Hand-in-Hand’, the annual Joint Military Exercise between India and China is going to be held at Umroi, near Shillong, Meghalaya in December 2019. 
    • The 2-week long company-level exercise will take place in 2nd half of December while the planning conference to finalise modalities for joint exercise will be held in August 2019.
    • Note : The 7th edition of this Exercise was held in Chengdu in December 2018.
  • The American city of Berkeley has renamed 'manholes' as 'maintenance holes' under the plan to remove all gendered language from its municipal code. 
    • The terms 'men and women' have been replaced by 'people', while the terms 'brother' and 'sister' will be referred to as 'sibling'.
People in News
  • Benjamin Netanyahu has become Israel's longest-serving Prime Minister, surpassing the record set by the country's founding father and first leader David Ben-Gurion
    • As of today, Netanyahu has spent 4,876 days (more than 13 years) in office. 
    • Note : He won his first election in 1996, becoming Israel's youngest-ever Prime Minister at the age of 46.
National Current Affairs
  • The Rajasthan government has launched a training program for class 8 and 9 students to make them aware of basic laws and legal procedures
    • Students would be trained as Student Police Cadets under this program jointly initiated by the state education board and police departments. 
    • The training further aims to curb rising adolescent delinquency and strengthen teenagers mentally and physically.
  • The Rajasthan government has also decided to introduce chapters on crime against women in class 10 and 12 syllabi. 
    • The aim of adding these chapters in the curriculum is to raise awareness among the students regarding the incidents of crime against women. 
  • The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has decided to declare all lanes at toll plazas on national highways across the country as FASTag lanes from December 1. 
    • However, one 'hybrid lane' will be allowed at every toll plaza where FASTag and other modes of payment will be accepted. 
    • Note : FASTag is a prepaid tag which enables automatic deduction of toll charges.
  • The 5th edition of International Police Expo 2019 was concluded today at Pragati Maidan in New Delhi
    • This event saw participation of Manufacturers and technology players from more than 25 countries.
    • Theme of 5th International Police Expo 2019  : ‘Challenges to strengthen peace and security
  • Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) have launched a 3 day special campaign called Jan Jagrukta Abhiyaan in New Delhi. 
    • This campaign is aimed towards sensitizing and mobilising community for prevention and control of vector borne diseases (VBDs) such as Dengue, Chikungunya and Malaria. 
Deaths
  • César Pelli (92), the Argentine designer behind the Petronas Twin Towers in Malaysia, has died aged 92. 
    • Pelli's other works include the World Financial Center in New York, Canary Wharf Tower in London and renovation work on New York's Museum of Modern Art. 
    • Pelli also served as the dean of Yale University's School of Architecture.

  • Union Tourism Ministry’s Incredible India ‘Find the Incredible You’ campaign has won PATA (Pacific Asia Travel Association) Gold Award 2019.
    • It won the award in ‘Marketing – Primary Government Destination’ category
  • Ex-India batsman Sachin Tendulkar, ex-South Africa pacer Allan Donald and ex-Australia Women pacer Cathryn Fitzpatrick have been inducted into the ICC Hall of Fame
    • Sachin is the 6th Indian cricketer after Anil Kumble, Sunil Gavaskar, Bishan Singh Bedi, Kapil Dev and Rahul Dravid to be inducted into the ICC Hall of Fame.
    • Note : A cricketer becomes eligible for this award only after he completes 5 years of retirement.
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • 19th July 2019 marks the 50th anniversary of Bank Nationalization
    • 14 banks with deposits of at least Rs 50 crore each were nationalised in the midnight of July 19, 1969 hours after then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi addressed the nation on this.
    • The main aim of this nationalization is to serve the rural economy by expanding the branch network in rural areas.As a result of nationalization, 85 percent of the banking business in terms of deposits was brought under public control.
    • The 14 banks which were Nationalized on 19th July 1969 are
      1. The Allahabad Bank
      2. The Bank of Baroda
      3. The Bank of India
      4. The Bank of Maharashtra
      5. The Canara Bank
      6. The Central Bank of India
      7. The Dena Bank
      8. The Indian Bank
      9. The Indian Overseas Bank
      10. The Punjab National Bank
      11. The Syndicate Bank
      12. The Union Bank of India
      13. The United Bank of India
      14. The United Commercial Bank 
    • There are two reasons for the nationalization. 
      • 1st Reason : The unpredictable manner in which these banks functioned as private entities. There were 361 private banks which failed between 1947 and 1955, translating to an average of over 40 banks per year resulting in depositors losing all their money. 
      • 2nd Reason : These were seen as catering to large industries and business houses, ignoring the agriculture sector. 
  • Just 18 months after it commenced operations, Aditya Birla Payments Bank, a joint venture between Grasim and Vodafone Idea, has announced it's shutting down
    • Payments banks cannot accept deposits of over ₹1 lakh from one account holder and are not allowed to lend. 
    • The company said it has made "full and complete arrangements" for the return of all deposits.
  • State-run Allahabad Bank has announced that it has reported a fraud of nearly ₹688.3 crore by textile firm SEL Manufacturing (SELM) to the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). 
    • The fraud by SELM, a non-performing asset account, is being heard by the National Company Law Tribunal. 
    • Earlier, Allahabad Bank had reported a fraud of ₹1,775 crore by bankrupt steelmaker Bhushan Power and Steel.
  • Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Industries' telecom unit Reliance Jio has overtaken rival Bharti Airtel to become India's 2nd-largest operator by subscribers as of May. 
  • The World Bank has pulled out $300 million lending to Amaravati Capital City project in Andhra Pradesh.
    • This comes after several NGOs made representations, opposing the project for building the city on Krishna river floodplains.
  • IDBI Bank has reduced interest rates on Fixed Deposits (FD) with effect from July 19 by 15 basis points (bps) for its long-term deposits and between 25 bps and 50 bps for short-term deposits.
Science & Technology
  • World is celebrating the 50th anniversary of Apollo11 Moon Landing on 20th July 2019, when American astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin became the 1st humans to set foot on the Moon
    • Their lunar module, named Eagle, touched down on 20th July 1969.
  • Indian Army has successfully conducted summer user trials of NAG, 3rd Generation Anti-Tank Guided Missile (ATGM)
    • The test was carried out at Pokhran Field Firing Ranges in Rajasthan.
MOUs & Agreements
  • Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) has signed a $50 million deal with India to supply complementary Naval MRSAM systems to Indian Navy and Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders.
    • The deal is a follow-up agreement between IAI and India, as per which former will provide complementary Naval MRSAM (Medium Range Surface-To-Air Missile) systems to Indian Navy.
New Appointments
  • 2004 batch Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer Vivek Kumar was appointed as Private Secretary to Prime Minister Narendra Modi
    • He is going to replace Sanjeev Kumar Singla, who has been appointed India's ambassador to Israel.
  • Wadia Group-run budget carrier GoAir has hired former Airbus executive Miranda Mills as the Chief Operating Officer (COO)
    • She will be reporting to the airline's Managing Director Jeh Wadia
Sports Current Affairs
  • 19-year-old Sprinter Hima Das clinched her 4th Gold medal in 15 days after winning the 200m race at Tabor Athletics Meet in Czech Republic
    • She won Kutno Athletics Meet and Kladno Athletics Meet with time of 23.97 seconds and 23.43 seconds respectively.
  • Delhi's Prithu Gupta has become India's 64th Grandmaster after crossing the Elo threshold of 2500 points after beating IM Lev Yankelevich in the fifth round of the Portuguese League 2019. 
  • India's Aishwarya Pratap Singh Tomar won the Gold medal in Men's rifle three positions event in the ISSF Junior World Cup in Germany, breaking the men's junior world record.
    • His feat helped India top the medals tally in the tournament. 
    • Note : India finished the tournament with 10 gold medals, 9 silver medals and 5  bronze medals.
  • Indian shuttler PV Sindhu beat the third-seeded Japanese shuttler Nozomi Okuhara in the Indonesia Open 2019 to reach the semi-final stage of the tournament.
  • Nigeria captain John Obi Mikel announced his retirement from international football after helping Nigeria reach the third place in the Africa Cup of Nations 2019
    • Mikel, retiring with 89 international caps and six goals to his name, had led Nigeria to win a bronze medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics in Brazil as one of the over-aged players.
  • Former Indian sprinter PT Usha has been nominated for International Association of Athletics Federations' (IAAF) Veteran Pin
    • PT Usha won a total of 101 international medals including five golds at 1985 Jakarta Asian Track and Field Meet.
