International Current Affairs
  • Today (31st May) is World No Tobacco Day.
    • This day is an annual awareness day sponsored by the World Health Organization (WHO) since 1987 to highlight the health risks associated with tobacco use and encourage governments to adopt effective policies to reduce smoking and other tobacco use.
    • Theme of World No Tobacco Day 2019 : ‘Tobacco and Lung Health’.
National Current Affairs
  • India's Unemployment Rate rose to a 45-year high of 6.1% in 2017-18 fiscal year, the Statistics Ministry announced today. 
    • The data showed that 7.8% of all employable youth in urban areas were jobless, while the figure was 5.3% in rural areas
    • Joblessness among men stood at 6.2%, compared to 5.7% for women.
  • The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) said that the water of river Ganga is unfit for direct drinking and bathing at most of the places it travels through in India. 
    • Out of 86 live monitoring stations installed across India, only seven areas were found to be fit for drinking after disinfection and 18 were found to be fit for bathing.
  • Andhra Pradesh CM Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy announced the opening of a call centre in the CMO to receive complaints from the people about corruption, discrimination or on not receiving government schemes' benefits. 
    • He added by August 15, four lakh jobs will be provided with the appointment of village volunteers. 
People in News
  • Flight Lieutenant Mohana Singh has become the 1st woman fighter pilot to be qualified to undertake missions by day on Hawk advanced jet aircraft.
    • Her training involved flying both air-to-air combat and air-to-ground missions. 
    • She has a total of over 500 hours of incident-free flying of which 380 hours are on the Hawk Mk 132 jet.
Deaths
  • India's only orangutan, Binny (41) passed away at Odisha's Nandankanan Zoological Park following a prolonged illness. 
    • Binny was brought to Nandankanan Zoo from Pune's Rajiv Gandhi Zoological Park in November 2003, when she was 25.
New Appointments
  • Narendra Modi, who was elected for a second term at the Centre, took oath as the Prime Minister at the Rashtrapati Bhavan. 
    • The oath-taking ceremony was attended by leaders of the BIMSTEC member countries. Several foreign and Opposition leaders attended the ceremony including Presidents of Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Myanmar, and Congress' Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi.
    • Modi has retained the charge of Department of Space and the Department of Atomic Energy in the new government. 
    • He will also head Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions
    • The Prime Minister will also decide on all important policy issues and will be incharge of all other portfolios not allocated to any Minister.
  • The government has released the list of Cabinet Ministers and their portfolios.
    • Debutants Amit Shah and Subrahmanyam Jaishankar have been given the charge of Ministry of Home Affairs and Ministry of External Affairs, respectively. 
    • Rajnath Singh is the new Defence Minister and Nirmala Sitharaman has been named Finance Minister. 
    • Smriti Irani has been given charge of Textiles and Women and Child Development Ministries.

  • Admiral Karambir Singh has assumed charge as the 24th Chief of the Naval Staff.
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will present her 1st Union Budget for 2019-20 on July 5
    • The Economic Survey will be presented by new Chief Economic Adviser Krishnamurthy Subramanian on July 4. 
    • The first session of the 17th Lok Sabha is set to begin on June 17 and will continue till July 26.
  • India lost its spot as the fastest growing major economy to China in the January-March quarter for the first time in one-and-a-half years.
    • India's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth rate slowed to 5.8% in the quarter, compared to China's 6.4%. 
    • This is also India's slowest growth rate in five years.
  • Russian President Vladimir Putin has refused to sell S-400 missile defence systems to Iran amid the Middle-Eastern country's ongoing tensions with the U.
    • The US recently imposed more anti-Iranian sanctions and sent an aircraft carrier and bombers due to what it described as a threat of an attack from Iran on its forces and allies.
  • US President Donald Trump has announced a tariff of 5% on all goods from Mexico starting June in a bid to pressure the country to resolve the issue of illegal immigration to the US through its border. 
    • The tariff will increase up to 25% until the problem is resolved, he added. 
    • The duties will gradually increase by 5% every month.
Sports Current Affairs
  • Hosts England defeated South Africa by 104 runs in the 2019 World Cup opener at Kennington Oval in London. 
    • England and South Africa have faced each other in World Cup 7 times now, with England winning 4 times. 
  • World number 3 Roger Federer became the 1st player in history to play 400 Grand Slam matches.
