International Current Affairs
  • Today (23rd June) is International Olympic Day.
    • This day was introduced in 1948 to commemorate the birth of the modern Olympic Games on 23 June 1894 at the Sorbonne in Paris.
    • The goal of this day is to promote participation in sport across the globe regardless of age, gender or athletic ability.    
  • Today (23rd June) is the World Public Service Day.
    • This day is dedicated by the United Nations to “celebrate the value and virtue of public service to the community”.
    • Since 2003, this day is marked with UN Public Service Awards Ceremony wherein works of public servants are recognised and they are awarded for their contributions in the field.
  • Today (23rd June) is International Widows Day.
    • This day is a United Nations ratified day of action to address the "poverty and injustice faced by millions of widows and their dependents in many countries".
    • This day was established by The Loomba Foundation to raise awareness of the issue of widowhood.
    • The significance of 23 June is that it was on that day in 1954 that Shrimati Pushpa Wati Loomba, mother of the foundation's founder, Lord Loomba, became a widow.
  • Northwest African country Mauritania went to polls for the 1st time since gained independence from France nearly 60 years ago
    • President Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz, who seized power in a coup in 2008, agreed to step down and abide by the maximum two five-year elected terms. 
    • Non-elected military governments have mostly ruled the country following independence.
  • Indian Navy launched ‘Operation Sankalp’ in Persian Gulf and Gulf of Oman to reassure safe passage of Indian flagged vessels transiting through area. 
    • This deployment is in the wake of following recent maritime incidents in region.
National Current Affairs
  • Bihar recently banned felling of trees, citing increasing pollution as well as a fatal heatwave.
    • Trees on private land, however, can be felled in the absence of a tree-protection Act in Bihar.
  • Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal has announced that the government is going to pay examination fee charged by CBSE from students in government schools from next year.
  • Union Minister for Environment Prakash Javadekar informed the Lok Sabha that India’s forest cover has increased by 1% in last one year period and over 24.39% of India’s geographical area now constitutes of green cover.
  • The Air strike by the Indian Air Force (IAF) on a terrorist training camp in Balakot, Pakistan, was code-named ‘Operation Bandar (Monkey)’.
    • As a response to the Pulwama terror attack which claimed the lives of 40 security personnel, 12 IAF Mirage-2000 fighter jets struck on Jaish-e-Mohammed training camp in Balakot inside Pakistan in the early hours on February 26 with precision guided munitions.
Science & Technology
  • Civil Aviation Minister Hardeep Singh Puri today inaugurated the Central Command Centre for Air Traffic Flow Management (ATFM) in Delhi. 
    • As of now, only countries including the US, Australia and Japan have a centralised air traffic flow management system. 
    • The system will help balance capacity against demand for optimum utilisation of resources like airspace and aircraft at capacity-constrained airports.
  • To send a rover to Mars' moons Phobos and Deimos, Japanese space agency JAXA has partnered with the space agencies of Germany (DLR) and France (CNES)
    • If successful, the rover will become the 1st-ever to land on a minor body in the solar system
    • Note : JAXA is targeting the launch of the Martian Moons eXploration (MMX) mission for 2024.
  • The World Health Organisation (WHO) recently launched a global campaign urging governments all across the world to adopt its new online tool called AWaRe (Access, Watch and Reserve), which is aimed at guiding policy-makers and health workers of country to reduce spread of antimicrobial resistance, adverse events and costs.
    • This AWaRe tool was developed by World Health Oraganisation’s Essential Medicines List (EML) to reduce spread of antimicrobial resistance, antibiotic-related adverse events, and also to make antibiotic use safer, cheaper and more effective for its consumer.

  • The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) has set up a panel to review current framework of margins in the futures and options (F&O) derivative segment.
    • The panel will be headed by the National Stock Exchange (NSE) Clearing Ltd., and will submit its recommendations to Secondary Market Advisory Committee.

  • Former Tamil Nadu DGP V R Lakshminarayanan (91) who arrested the late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in a corruption case, passed away.
Books & Authors
  • Yoga guru Baba Ramdev recently announced that he is going to release his autobiography titled ‘My Life, My Mission’. 
    • The book is co-authored by senior journalist Uday Mahurkar.
    • This book, is being published by Penguin Random House, will unveil trials, tribulations, and triumphs of Ramdev's life and provide insights into his childhood.
New Appointments
  • Indian author Amish Tripathi has been named the Director of London's Nehru Centre, which is under the Indian Council for Cultural Relations.
    • Amish is known for his novels The Immortals of Meluha, The Secret of the Nagas, The Oath of the Vayuputras, Scion of Ikshvaku and Sita: Warrior of Mithila.
  • 1992 batch officer of Indian Revenue Service (Income Tax cadre)  Shefali Juneja was appointed as Representative of India (JS Level) in council of International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO), Montreal, Canada.
Sports Current Affairs
  • India clinched the women's FIH Series Finals hockey tournament by beating hosts Japan 3-1 in the summit clash in Hiroshima today. T
  • World number 3 Roger Federer defeated David Goffin in the final to win the Halle Open for the 10th time. 
    • It is the first time that the 37-year-old has won the same title 10 times in his career.
    • It was Federer's 102nd tour-level title and his 19th tour-level title on grass.
  • Fast bowler Mohammad Shami took a last-over hat-trick as India defeated Afghanistan in a low-scoring match to continue their unbeaten run in 2019 World Cup
    • With this, India became the 3rd team after Australia (67) and New Zealand (52) to win 50 World Cup matches. 
    • India have now accumulated 9 points from 5 matches in the tournament.
  • The Indian women's rugby team claimed their 1st-ever international 15s victory by defeating Singapore 21-19 in the Asia Rugby Women's Championship Division 1. I
  • Pranati Nayak of India won bronze medal in vault event held at Senior Asian Artistic Gymnastics Championships 2019 in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia.
  • Indian cueist Pankaj Advani has completed his 'career grand slam' in cue sports after winning the 35th men's Asian Snooker Championship
    • With his win, Advani has now won the ACBS Asian Snooker events, 6-red (short format) and 15-red (long format), along with the IBSF World Championships in both formats too.
