International Current Affairs
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi will attend the 14th G20 summit in Japan next week and will raise the issues of financial stability, black money and terrorism, among others.
    • The 14th edition of G20 Summit will be held in Osaka, Japan during 28th and 29th June 2019.
    • More than 20 countries will be participating in the G20 Summit.
    • Former Union Minister Suresh Prabhu will be India's sherpa at the summit. 
    • Meaning of Sherpa : a civil servant or diplomat who undertakes preparatory work prior to a summit conference
    • Food security,     energy security, financial stability, terrorism-related issues, Innovation in the digital economy and artificial intelligence will be discussed in the summit. 
    • Theme of 14th G20 Summit : "Human-centred future society".
    • Important Note : India will host the G20 summit in 2022 for the 1st time.
  • Russian President Vladimir Putin has signed a decree temporarily banning Russian airlines from carrying Russian citizens to Georgia from July 8. 
    • This comes after a Russian MP's speech in Georgia's Parliament triggered widespread protests and clashes, with Russia calling it "an anti-Russian provocation". 
    • The decree also ordered to assure the return of Russian citizens currently in Georgia.
  • New Zealand has allowed placing ballot boxes in supermarkets and malls to make it easier for people to vote.
National Current Affairs
  • The Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Project in Telangana was inaugurated by the state's Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao
    • Important Note : This project is believed to be the largest multi-stage, multi-purpose lift irrigation project in the world
  • Government think-tank NITI Aayog has proposed that 2-wheelers with an engine capacity less than 150 cc to be converted to electric by 2025. 
    • Moreover, it also aims to make 3-wheelers to be fully electric by 2023. 
  • The Maharashtra Legislative Council today cleared a bill to provide 16% reservation to the Maratha community students in Post-graduate (PG) medical courses. 
    • This comes a day after the bill was unanimously passed in the Legislative Assembly. 
  • The Uttar Pradesh government has announced that Khadi uniforms will be introduced in the primary schools of some districts on a pilot project basis to promote the fabric among children. 
    • The uniform for boys will be dark brown trousers and pink shirts, while for girls it will be dark brown skirts and pink tops.
  • The Government has set up 713 Krishi Vigyan Kendras and 684 Agricultural Technology Management Agencies at the district level in the country for dissemination of technologies among the farming community.
    • This is aimed at meeting the target of doubling the farmers' income by 2022.
Deaths
  • Noted mridangam exponent and former top grade staff artist of All India Radio, Thanjavoor Ramamoorthy (90) passed away in Trichy, Tamilnadu today.
    • He had the unique distinction of having accompanied four generations of Carnatic stalwarts starting from violin genius Muringapuri Gopalakrishna Iyer, right up to renowned vocalist ML Vasanthakumari. 
    • He was the recipient of the  Kalaimamani award of the Government of Tamilnadu.
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • The Printing of Union Budget Documents 2019-20 began today with the traditional Halwa ceremony.
    • Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman performed the Halwa ceremony along with Minister of State for Finance Anurag Thakur.
    • After the Halwa ceremony, officials of the Finance Ministry will stay in Budget printing press until the Budget is presented in Parliament.
    • Note : Ms Sitharaman will present the Union Budget in Parliament on 5th July 2019.
  • For the first time in about 15 months, the price of the world's largest cryptocurrency Bitcoin breached $10,000 today. 
    • The cryptocurrency surged to $10,900, gaining nearly 200% so far this year.
    • Note : Bitcoin reached an all-time high of around $20,000 in December 2017, capping a nearly 1,400% increase that year.
  • The Goods and Services Tax (GST) Council led by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman today decided to extend the tenure of the National Anti-Profiteering Authority (NAA) by two years. 
    • If the profiteered amount is not deposited in 30 days, penalty to the extent of 10% of the profiteered amount will be imposed on the company.
Awards & Honors
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi was voted the 'World's Most Powerful Person 2019' in the reader's poll conducted by UK-based British Herald magazine
    • Modi received 30.9% of total votes to beat US President Donald Trump, Russian President Vladimir Putin, and Chinese President Xi Jinping
    • Note : PM Modi will feature on the cover page of the July 15 edition of the magazine.
New Appointments
  • Justice Raghvendra Singh Chauhan was sworn-in as Chief Justice of Telangana High Court in Hyderabad this morning.
    • Governor ESL Narasimhan administered the oath of office to Justice Chauhan at Raj Bhavan.
