International Current Affairs
- Today (20th June 2019) is World Refugee Day.
- This day is observed by the United Nation High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR)
- This day is dedicated to raising awareness of the situation of refugees throughout the world.
- The decision to observe the day, coinciding with Africa Refugee Day, was made by the UN in December 2000.
- The first World Refugee Day marked the 50th anniversary of the UN Refugee Convention.
- Theme of World Refugee Day 2019 : “#StepWithRefugees — Take A Step on World Refugee Day"
- Important Points to Note :
- According to the UN refugee agency, UNHCR (United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees), the number of people forcibly displaced around the world due to war, persecution and conflict, has reached a record 7.08 crore in 2018.
- The agency attributed the increase from 2017 mainly to the displacement in Ethiopia and Venezuela.
- In 2018, every second refugee was a child, many of them alone and without their families.
- Russia's Deputy Prime Minister Yury Petrovich Trutnev is on a visit to India.
- Aim of this visit : To help both the countries to prepare grounds for the upcoming visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Vladivostok in early September to participate in the 5th edition of the Eastern Economic Forum as the Chief Guest.
- He also met External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and discussed ways to strengthen ties between the two nations.
- Mexico has ratified the US-Mexico-Canada agreement.
- This makes it the 1st country to give the new North American trade deal final approval despite recent tensions with the US.
- The Mexican government called the deal's passage a clear message in favor of an open economy and deepening economic integration in the region.
- Victoria has become the 1st state in Australia to enact Euthanasia laws that would now allow terminally ill patients suffering from intolerable pain to legally ask their doctor for lethal drugs to end their lives.
National Current Affairs
- The Road Transport and Highways Ministry has issued draft rules to exempt electric vehicles (EVs) from paying registration fee.
- The proposed exemption will apply to all categories of electric vehicles including scooters, motorbikes, autorickshaws and cars.
- This is part of the government's plan to encourage adoption of such vehicles to curb pollution and reduce dependence on oil imports.
- Mizoram's government has issued circular asking government employees to wear traditional dress to office voluntarily at least once a week.
- The decision has been taken to ensure the citizens' "closeness to the culture" and to promote "innovation in the production of cultural attires".
- The I&B Ministry has advised all private satellite TV channels to avoid showing children in a vulgar, indecent, suggestive and inappropriate manner.
- The Ministry noticed that some dance competitions on television show young kids performing dance moves originally performed by adults. "
- Tamil Nadu's capital Chennai is in crisis after the 4 reservoirs that supply water to India's sixth largest city have completely run dry.
- The water shortage in Chennai started several weeks ago and the Madras High Court has criticised the state government for inaction.
- The city is entirely dependent on the northeast monsoon which begins in October.
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
- IndusInd Bank today announced that its merger with Bharat Financial Inclusion (BFIL) will be effective from July 4.
- Note : The Hyderabad-based NBFC's current Chief Executive Officer (CEO) M R Rao will take charge as the consolidated entity's CEO.
- Indian banking and financial services company HDFC is going to acquire Apollo Hospitals' entire 50.8% stake in Apollo Munich Health Insurance and 0.4% held by some employees for ₹1,347 crore.
- After this deal, Apollo Munich is proposed to be merged with HDFC ERGO General Insurance Company.
- Note : Apollo Munich is a joint venture between Chennai-based Apollo Hospitals and German reinsurer Munich Re.
- The Untied States overtook China to once again become India's top goods trading partner in 2018-19.
- The bilateral goods trade between India and the US stood at $87.95 billion during the fiscal compared to $87 billion between India and China.
- Bangladesh has emerged as the fastest growing economy among the 45 countries of the Asia-Pacific region according to Asian Development Bank (ADB).
Science & Technology
- Sri Lanka's 1st satellite 'Raavana-1', designed and developed by two Sri Lankan engineers, was released into orbit from the International Space Station today.
- The satellite is expected to fulfil five missions including capturing pictures of Sri Lanka and surrounding regions.
- Designed for a minimum lifespan of 1.5 years, Raavana-1 is expected to be active for about five years.
- India region, which includes Bhutan and Nepal as well, had the world's highest data usage per smartphone at an average of 9.8GB per month in 2018, a report by Swedish telecom equipment maker Ericsson stated.
- The report further said that the usage will almost double to 18GB by 2024.
- North East Asia stood at 2nd position with 7.1GB per month.

- Winners List of Prime Minister’s Awards for outstanding contribution for Promotion and Development of Yoga - 2019
- The Ayush Ministry has released the list of awardees for Prime Minister’s Awards for outstanding contribution for Promotion and Development of Yoga - 2019. They are :
- Swami Rajarshi Muni of Life Mission, Gujarat
- Ms. Antonietta Rozzi of Italy,
- Bihar School of Yoga, Munger
- Japan Yoga Niketan, Japan
- Note : The award is given for outstanding contribution for promotion and development of Yoga.
- The winners will be felicitated with of a Trophy, Certificate and a Cash Award of 25 lakh rupees each.
- An Indian engineer named Nitesh Kumar Jangir won 2019 Commonwealth Secretary-General’s Innovation for Sustainable Development Award in London, United Kingdom (UK).
- He won the award in People category, for creating a low-cost breathing support device called ‘Saans’ for premature babies.
New Appointments
- BMW Group India, which comprises BMW, MINI and Motorrad brands, has named Rudratej Singh as its President and CEO.
Sports Current Affairs
- Indian middle-distance runner PU Chitra won Gold medal in women’s 1500m at Folksam Grand Prix 2019 held in Sollentuna, Sweden. S
- Indian batsman Shikhar Dhawan has been ruled out of the ongoing ICC Cricket World Cup 2019.
- Dhawan was injured during India's match against Australia on 9th of this month in London.
- The 33-year-old failed to make enough recovery in a fresh assessment of his thumb fracture.
- He has been replaced by young wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant.
