International Current Affairs
- Today (6th April) is International Day of Sport for Development and Peace.
- This day was initiated by the United Nations (UN), to recognize the power of sport in promoting peace and erasing cultural barriers worldwide.
- This day promotes healthy lifestyles and emphasizes the International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) focus on giving as many people as possible access to sport.
- The UK government has started issuing British passports without the words "European Union", despite the delay in Brexit.
- The decision to remove "European Union" was made in the expectation that the UK would be leaving the bloc on March 29.
- Note : British Prime Minister Theresa May has asked the European Union to delay Brexit until June 30.
- More than 1,000 cases of Ebola have been reported in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) since the outbreak was reported in August last year, including nearly 630 deaths.
- This past week saw 58 new cases, the highest number in a week in 2019, according to the International Rescue Committee (IRC).
National Current Affairs
- Traditional new year festivities are being celebrated in several parts of India today.
- Andhra Pradesh & Telangana : People are celebrating Ugaadi across these two Telugu states to mark the beginning of the Hindu Lunar calendar.
- Maharashtra : Gudi Padwa signifies the welcoming of spring. This day marks the beginning of Chaitra Navratri, that lead up to Ram Navami.
- Manipur : Sajibu Nongma Panba Cheiraoba marking the beginning of the new Manipuri calendar was celebrated today.
- The 1st vote of 2019 Lok Sabha elections was cast in Arunachal Pradesh's Lohitpur by service voters on Friday.
- The first vote was cast by DIG Sudhakar Natarajan, who is the head of Animal Training School (ATS) of Indo Tibetan Border Police Force (ITBP).
- The government is planning to link Social Media accounts with Mobile Numbers or official identities like Aadhaar or Passport in a bid to control trolls and spread of fake news.
- Aim of this move : To balance the need to uphold privacy while ensuring accountability wherein data will be stored with platforms and accessed when needed.
- Senior US Treasury official David Malpass has been selected as President of the World Bank.
- The World Bank's executive board unanimously selected 63-year-old Malpass as the bank's 13th President for a 5-year term last night.
- The World Bank President is Chair of Boards of Directors of the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development and International Development Association.
- All India Football Federation president Praful Patel has become the 1st Indian to be elected as a Member of the FIFA Executive Council.
- He was one of the eight candidates vying for the spot in the election which was held during the 29th Asian Football Confederations Congress in Kuala Lumpur.
- Note : The membership in the council will be for four years, from 2019 to 2023.
- India's campaign at the Malaysia Open 2019 ended after shuttler Kidambi Srikanth crashed out of the tournament after losing in the quarter-final.
- He lost to Olympic champion and world number five China's Chen Long.
- This was Srikanth's fourth quarter-final defeat of the season.
- The Indian Men's Football Team gained two places to rise to 101 in recently released FIFA rankings.
- With 1219 total ranking points, the Indian team lies 18th among the Asian countries.
- Iran continued to top the Asian rankings at 21, followed by Japan (26), South Korea (37), Australia (41) and Qatar (55).
- Belgium holds on to the top spot, with France in the second spot and Brazil in third place.
