International Current Affairs
  • Vice President M. Venkaiah Naidu will embark on a 2-nation visit to Paraguay and Costa Rica on 4th March 2019. 
    • Important Note : This is the 1st high-level visit from India to both the countries.  
    • Paraguay Visit :
      • During this visit, he will meet with President of Paraguay Mario Abdo Benítez, Vice President Hugo Velázquez, among other dignitaries. 
      • He will also address the India-Paraguay business forum and interact with the Indian diaspora in Paraguay.
    • Costa Rica Visit :
      • During this visit, he will meet President of Costa Rica Carlos Alvarado Quesada, First Vice President, Epsy Campbell Barr as well as President of Congress Carolina Hidalgo Herrera
      • He will address the prestigious University of Peace, established under the auspices of the United Nations with a specific mandate of furthering the agenda of peace.
      • He will deliver the keynote address at the India-Costa Rica business forum and meet with the Indian community.
National Current Affairs
  • PM Narendra Modi flagged off the Madurai-Chennai Egmore Tejas Express, the fastest train running between the two cities, via video conferencing from Kanyakumari. 
    • The fully air-conditioned train comprises one executive chair car coach with 56 seats and 12 chair car coaches with 78 seats each. 
    • The train's features include infotainment system, attendant call button and smart windows.
  • Union Minister for Textiles Smriti Zubin Irani launched a comprehensive programme for the the development of knitting and knitwear sector in the country under the PowerTex India scheme.
    • The programme, the outlay for which is ₹47.72 crore, would be in operation till the end of March next year.
    • The total outlay for PowerTex India Scheme and the Knitwear Scheme is ₹487.07 crore. 
    • Of this, ₹439.35 crore is for powerloom units for three years from April 1, 2017 to March 31, 2020 and ₹47.72 crore for the knitwear scheme.
    • Almost ₹170 crore were disbursed to the powerloom sector till January 31, 2019.
    • Important Note : Knitting is a major segment in the textile value chain, constituting 27% of the total fabric produced in the country.
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • Fraud-hit Punjab National Bank has been ranked 1st among public sector banks in the implementation of ‘reforms agenda’, followed by Bank of Baroda and State Bank of India (SBI).
  • The Union Cabinet has approved the “Pradhan Mantri JI-VAN (Jaiv Indhan- Vatavaran Anukool fasal awashesh Nivaran) Yojana” under the Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas to provide financial support to Integrated Bioethanol Projects using lignocellulosic biomass and other renewable feedstock.
    • The scheme aims to incentivise 2G Ethanol sector and support this nascent industry by creating a suitable ecosystem for setting up commercial projects and increasing Research & Development in this area.
Science & Technology
  • A 30-member team of IIT Madras students, Team Avishkar Hyperloop, has cleared the final design round of SpaceX Hyperloop Pod Competition 2019, becoming one of the top 22 teams selected from across the world. 
    • The team is also the only Indian finalist. 
    • Now the students will represent India at the finals at SpaceX Headquarters in Los Angeles in July 2019.
  • Aircraft manufacturer Boeing has unveiled an artificial intelligence-powered unmanned jet developed in Australia, intended to be sold to global defence customers. 
    • The 11.7-metre-long Boeing Airpower Teaming System, with a range of around 3,704 kilometres, is Boeing's largest investment in a new unmanned aircraft program outside the US. 
    • The first flight of the unmanned jet is planned for 2020.
  • The Union Cabinet has approved the National Policy on Software Products 2019
    • The policy is aimed at developing India as a Software Product Nation. 
    • An outlay of Rs 1500 crore divided into Software Product Development Fund and Research & Innovation fund is envisaged to implement the programmes/ schemes envisaged under this policy over a period of 7 years.
Deaths
  • Zhores Alferov (88), joint winner of the 2000 Nobel Prize in Physics and a member of the Russian Parliament, passed away. 
    • Alferov's research in communication technology led to advancements in computers, CD players and mobile phones. 
  • Former Deputy Prime Minister of Nepal and Senior leader of ruling Nepal Communist Party (NCP), Bharat Mohan Adhikari (83) passed away.
    • He was very popular among the common people for introducing "Aafno Gaun Aafai Banau", a development programme aimed at developing villages across the country by giving them the authority to select local projects on their own.
New Appointments
  • Bhagwan Lal Sahni has been appointed as the Chairman of the National Commission for Backward Classes
    • Kaushalendra Singh Patel and Acharya Talloju have been appointed as the members of the commission.
  • Indian American Medha Narvekar has been appointed as the Vice President and Secretary of the University of Pennsylvania.
    • Prior to this appointment, she served as senior associate vice president of the Pennsylvania Development and Alumni Relations.
Sports Current Affairs
  • 20-time Grand Slam champion Roger Federer defeated Stefanos Tsitsipas in the final of the Dubai Tennis Championships to win his 100th Career Singles' title.
    • With this, Federer became 2nd man, after Jimmy Connors to claim 100 ATP titles.
    • Federer will have to win 10 more titles to beat Connors' men's record of 109.
    • Note : Martina Navratilova holds the all-time record having won 167 women's singles crowns during her career.
  • A Centre for Disability Sports will be set up at Gwalior (Madhya Pradesh). 
    • The centre will ensure effective participation of Persons with Disabilities in sports activities and also enable them to compete at national and international levels.
    • It will have an Outdoor Athletic Stadium, Indoor Sports Complex and Aquatic Centre having two Swimming Pools, one covered Pool and an Outdoor Pool.
  • Australian tennis player Nick Kyrgios defeated world number three Alexander Zverev in the final to win the Mexico Open title.
  • India's star wrestler Bajrang Punia has won a Gold medal in 65-kilogram freestyle in Bulgaria. 
    • The tournament is being held at the Dan Kolov-Nikola Petrov in Ruse.
    • Earlier, Pooja Dhanda claimed Gold in women's 59 kg while Sarita Mor won a Silver in the same weight category. 
    • Sakshi Malik won silver in 65 kg women's freestyle. 
    • In the men's freestyle events, Sandeep Tomar claimed silver in 61kg.
