International Current Affairs
  • Macedonia today signed an accord to join NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization).
  • The Nepal government has made it mandatory for Indian citizens who come to work in Nepali industries to take necessary work permit
  • The meeting of 3rd  Indo-German Working Group for cooperation on water and waste management was concluded in New Delhi today.
    • Both sides discussed potential cooperation in this area. 
    • India and Germany have joined hands for cooperation on Water and Waste Management.
  • The month of February has been celebrated as 'Black History Month' in the US since 1976 to acknowledge contributions of African-Americans. 
    • The event grew out of 'Negro History Week' started by historian Carter G Woodson. 
    • He chose February to coincide the week with the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass, who fought for the rights of African-Americans.
National Current Affairs
  • The Cabinet today approved a proposal for setting up of the ‘Rashtriya Kamdhenu Aayog’ (National Commission for Cows) for conservation, protection and development of cows and their progeny.
    • The Aayog will be a a high-powered permanent body which will formulate policy and issue directions for scaling up sustainable genetic upgradation of bovine resources and also look after effective implementation of laws and welfare schemes for cows.
    • Note : The government had announced its proposal to set up such a commission for cows in its interim budget on February 1.
  • The Bureau of Police Research and Development (BPRD) organized the 2nd National Conference of Micro Missions of National Police Mission in New Delhi today.
    • The two day Conference will discuss the issues of Skills and Competence at the grass-root level, Attitudinal Changes in Police, Gender Sensitization, harnessing technology and Community Policing. 
    • The conference was inaugurated by : N. N.Vohra (Former Governor of Jammu and Kashmir)
  • The Union Minister of Textiles Smriti Irani today launched the India Size project in Mumbai.  
    • A first-of-its-kind project in the history of the country, India Size aims to arrive at a standard Indian Size for the ready-to-wear clothing industry, on the lines of the standardized sizes available in countries such as the USA and the UK.
  • The Cabinet has approved amendments to the Cinematograph Act, 1952 to tackle film piracy and Copyright infringement.
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • The Monetary Policy Committee headed by Reserve Bank of India Governor Shaktikanta Das, today announced a reduction in policy Repo rate by 25 basis points from 6.5 per cent to 6.25 per cent with immediate effect.
    • Meanwhile, the reverse repo rate stands adjusted at 6%
    • This move makes home and automobile loans cheaper.

      • MSF (Marginal Standing Facility) : 6.50%

  • Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Dharmendra Pradhan today announced that India has become the world's second-largest importer of LPG after China. 
    • Under Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) of providing LPG connections to the poor, over 6.31 crore connections have been provided.
  • RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das today announced that the limit of collateral free agricultural loans has been increased from one lakh to 1.6 lakh
    • The decision has been taken in view of the overall inflation and rise in the agricultural input costs since 2010 when the limit was last revised.

  • The CBI has formed a 10-member team to probe the Saradha chit fund scam in West Bengal.

Science & Technology
  • Russia today announced that it is going to develop new missile systems by 2021 after both Russia and the US suspended their involvement in the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty which banned both countries from stationing short and intermediate-range, land-based missiles in Europe. 
  • The Indian government has approved a plan to use space technology in border management to check intrusion. 
    • Over three thousand incidents of intrusion on country’s borders took place in the last four years. 
    • Island development, border security, communication and navigation, Geographic Information System and border infrastructure development are the areas which have been identified for use of space technology in improving border management.
Awards & Honors
  • Father François Laborde, a 92-year-old Indian priest, was conferred the Insignia of the Officer of the Legion of Honour today.
    • This is France's highest civilian honour
    • He was awarded in recognition of his work for differently abled children, the destitute and the most deprived sections of the society. 
    • Note : Laborde had already been made a Chevalier of the Legion of Honour.
MoUs & Agreements
  • The Cabinet today approved the signing of the following Memorandum of Understandings (MoUs) :
    • MoU between India and Malaysia for Mutual Cooperation to raise the status and prestige of the Practicing Company Secretary in both countries and to facilitate the movement of the Company Secretaries across borders in the Asia-Pacific Region.
    • Proposal for MoU between India and the Electoral Commission of Namibia and with Electoral Tribunal of Panama on cooperation in the field of electoral management and administration.
    • MoU between India and Norway on India-Norway Ocean Dialogue to promote cooperation in the areas of mutual interest pertaining to the development of the blue economy.
      • MoU between India and Brazil on cooperation in the field of Traditional Systems of Medicine and Homeopathy.
      • MoU between the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers' Welfare, India and the Ministry of Fisheries, Marine Resource and Agriculture, Maldives to set up a Joint Working Group, to prepare plans of cooperation, implement the tasks determined by the Parties and to indicate the implementation of activities
      • MoU between India and the United Arab Emirates on Development Cooperation in Africa. 
        • The MoU entails setting up a framework of cooperation between the two countries for implementing development partnership projects and programmes in Africa.
      • MoU between India and Finland for collaborating based on mutual interest in the field of Biotechnology, for funding and implementing ambitious industry-led innovative and transnational projects within the broad scope of research development and innovation.
      • MoU between India and Uzbekistan for promoting bilateral cooperation in the field of e-Governance.
    New Appointments
    • The government today appointed Air India Chairman and Managing Director Pradeep Singh Kharola as the new Civil Aviation Secretary
      • He is going to replace Rajiv Nayan Choubey who had retired last month. 
    • American multinational corporation Cognizant today appointed Vodafone Business' head Brian Humphries as the company's new Chief Executive Officer (CEO)
      • He is going to replace Francisco D'Souza, who co-founded Cognizant and has served as its CEO since 2007.
      • Note : This is the first time the US-based IT services company has selected an outsider to be at the helm of the company.
    • A 1987 batch IPS officer Dinkar Gupta was today appointed Director General of Punjab Police.
      • He is gong to replace Suresh Arora, who had been on an extension after his retirement on September 30 last year.
    Sports Current Affairs
    • Vidharbha lifted the Ranji Trophy for the 2nd time in a row, defeating Saurashtra by 78 runs at Nagpur today.
      • Left arm spinner, Aditya Sarwate was adjudged man of the match.
    • Commonwealth Games gold medallist Saikhom Mirabai Chanu, in her first international tournament after getting injured, won gold at EGAT Cup in Thailand today. 
      • The tournament is one of the qualifying events for 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
