  • Today (4th February) is World Cancer Day.
    • This Day was founded by the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) to support the goals of the World Cancer Declaration, written in 2008.
    • The Day aims to save millions of preventable deaths each year through education, raising awareness and by pressing governments and individuals across the world to take action against the deadly disease. 
    • The primary goal of the World Cancer Day is to significantly reduce illness and death caused by cancer by 2020.
    • Theme of World Cancer Day 2019-21 : “I Am and I Will
    • Note : India has around 2.25 million cases with over 1 lakh new cases being registered every year. In 2018, the disease led to nearly 7 lakh deaths.
  • Today (4th February) is 71st Independence Day of Sri Lanka.

  • 22 countries and 9 dialogue partners of Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA) will deliberate on developing a draft Work Plan for Disaster Risk Management in IORA at a meeting in New Delhi tomorrow.
    • They will also discuss on the need for establishing a Disaster Risk Management Core Group to take forward the agreed objectives under the Work Plan.
    • Indian Home Ministry in collaboration with National Disaster Management Authority is organising the meeting.

  • Tulsi Gabbard, the 1st-ever Hindu elected to the US Congress, officially launched her 2020 presidential campaign today. 
    • The 37-year-old launched her candidacy in the US state of Hawaii, where she has served as a congresswoman since 2013. 
    • A Samoan-American, Gabbard is an Iraq war veteran and a member of the Democratic Party.
  • Nine European Union nations including the UK, France and Germany have recognised Juan Guaidó as Venezuela's interim President after the country's President Nicolás Maduro failed to meet an ultimatum calling for elections within eight days. 
    • Spain, Sweden, Denmark, Austria, the Netherlands and Latvia are among the nine EU nations. 
National Current Affairs
  • The Labour Ministry has decided to amend rules for allowing women to work in underground coal mines during day time and in open cast mines round the clock, for the first time, in a bid to bring gender equity and generate job opportunities.
    • It has also allowed women to work in mines above ground at any time of the day. 
    • The Mines Act, 1952, had restricted women in underground mines and limited working in above-ground mines between 6 am-7 pm.
  • The Maharashtra Cabinet today approved the 10% reservation in government jobs and educational institutes for the economically weaker section in general category in the state. 
    • With this, Maharashtra has become the 7th state to approve the implementation of the bill
    • Note : The Constitution (124th Amendment) Bill, 2019 was approved by President Ram Nath Kovind on January 12.
  • PM Narendra Modi inaugurated University of Ladakh, the 1st-ever university in the Ladakh region of Jammu and Kashmir
    • The university will be a cluster university comprising of degree colleges of Leh, Kargil, Nubra, Zanskar, Drass and Khaltsi. 
  • Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis inaugurated the annual 33rd Surajkund Ibnternational Crafts Mela 2019 at Faridabad (Haryana)
    • The Surajkund Mela is unique as it showcases the richness and diversity of the handicrafts, handlooms and cultural fabric of India.
    • This is the largest crafts fair in the world.
    • Note : Maharashtra is the Theme State for the year 2019.
  • External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj and Road Transport and  Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari today flagged off Suraksha Yatra - a motor car rally from Rajghat in New Delhi to commemorate the 150th Birth Anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. 
    • The flag off was also part of an event to launch the 30th National Road Safety Week.
    • The rally will travel through places historically associated with Gandhiji, both in India, as well as in Bangladesh and Myanmar. 
    • It will conclude at Yangon in Myanmar on the 24th of this month, covering a total distance of over seven thousand kilometres. 
    • It will take up advocacy on Road Safety concerns along the route.
  • President Ram Nath Kovind today inaugurated the annual Udyanotsav of the Mughal Gardens of Rashtrapati Bhavan. 
    • The Mughal Gardens will remain open for the general public from Wednesday to 10th of next month. 
    • The visitors can visit the garden between 9:00 AM to to 4:00 PM.
Science & Technology
  • The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is going to launch its 40th communication satellite GSAT-31 on  February 6 from the spaceport in French Guiana.
    • The satellite with a mission life of 15 years will provide continuity to operational services on some of the in-orbit satellites and augment the Ku-band transponder capacity in Geostationary Orbit.
  • The Philippines has topped the Global internet usage index with an average of ten hours and two minutes spent on the internet across devices per day.
    • India reportedly recorded an average daily internet use of nearly eight hours. 
    • The worldwide average usage was over six hours.

Awards & Honors
  • Manipur filmmaker Aribam Syam Sharma today returned the Padma Shri award to protest against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016. 
    • The veteran director received the award in 2006.
    • Note : On January 8, the Lok Sabha passed the bill which seeks to give citizenship to Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, Buddhists, Christians and Parsis from Afghanistan, Pakistan and Bangladesh.
Deaths
  • TVS Group's K Mahesh (75), who was the Chairman of the group's Sundaram Brake Linings, passed away.
    • He was the grandson of the automobile group's Founder TV Sundaram Iyengar and the younger brother of TVS & Sons' Chairman Suresh Krishna.
  • Iraq's renowned novelist and poet Alaa Mashzoub (51) was gunned down by unknown assailants in the city of Karbala. 
    • He is known for his criticism of corruption and foreign interference in his country.
    • He has 20 published books and has written extensively about Karbala's history and culture
    • He has also written about Iraq's once-thriving Jewish minority.
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • Government today decided to launch a campaign to saturate farmers for financial inclusion under Kisan Credit Cards (KCC)
    • The campaign will be launched through the Financial Institutions in collaboration with the State Governments. 
  • The Indian Banking Association (IBA) has issued advisory requesting banks to waive off the processing, documentation, inspection and all other service charges for Kisan Credit Card and crop loans upto three lakhs rupees.
    • Agriculture Ministry in a release said, there are over 21 crore small and marginal farmers  in the country and providing them timely and affordable credit is the key to attaining inclusive growth.
    • The Ministry observed, the small and Marginal farmers are the most affected during times of floods, droughts, and other natural calamities.
    • Note : The Kisan Credit Card Scheme aims at providing adequate and timely credit support from the banking system to the farmers to meet the short term credit requirements for cultivation of crops, investment credit requirements for agriculture and allied activities and other needs.
New Appointments
  • P V Bharathi has been appointed as the new Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Corporation Bank.  
    • With this, she became the 1st woman to serve the bank in this capacity.
    • Prior to this appointment, she has been working as the executive director of Canara Bank since September 15, 2016.
  • 1983-batch IPS officer of Madhya Pradesh Cadre, Rishi Kumar Shukla today took charge as the Director of Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI)
    • He has replaced M. Nageshwara Rao, who was working as Interim Chief of the Investigation Agency.
Sports Current Affairs
  • The Indian cricket team has grabbed the 2nd spot in the ICC One-day International rankings (Topped by England)
    • Important Note : Virat Kohli and Jasprit Bumrah have continued to top the charts for batsmen and bowlers.
