International Current Affairs
- The US Agency for International Development has stopped all financial assistance to Palestinians in the occupied West Bank and Gaza.
- It will end about $60 million in US aid for the Palestinian security forces.
- The aid cut requested by the Palestinian Authority, is linked to a new American legislation under which foreign aid recipients could be sued under anti-terrorism lawsuits.
- Presidential election will be held in El Salvador today, with four candidates contesting the post.
- Incumbent President Salvador Ceren cannot run for a second consecutive term under the country's legislation.
- Over 5.2 millions citizens have registered to vote.
- Note : El Salvador is the smallest and the most densely populated country in Central America.
- The landmark visit of Catholic Church head Pope Francis and Al Azhar Grand Imam Ahmed El-Tayeb to United Arab Emirates begins today.
- The three day-visit of the two religious leaders will see their participation in the Human Fraternity Conference which is being organized today and tomorrow in Abu Dhabi.
National Current Affairs
- The 12th edition of Aero India, Aero India 2019, will be held at Air Force Station at Yelahanka in Bengaluru from February 20 to 24.
- Aim of Aero India 2019 : To provide a significant platform in bolstering business opportunities in the International aviation sector.
- Tagline of Aero India 2019 : “The Runway to a Billion Opportunities”
- In Jammu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid laid foundation stones for new All India Institute of Medical Sciences at Vijaypur and Samba, a 624 Megawatt Kiru Hydroelectric project and 850 Megawatt Ratle Hydro Electric project in Kishtwar.
- The Prime Minister also laid foundation stone of 1.6 kilometres long double lane bridge over Chenab river at Sajwal Jourian in Akhnoor and a project on abatement of Devika and Tawi rivers under National River Conservation Plan.
- Modi also laid foundation stone of Indian Institute of Mass Communication campus of Northern Regional Centre at Jammu and inaugurated an engineering institute at Janglote in Kathua.
- In Leh, Mr Modi inaugurated the 9-megawatt Dah hydroelectric project.
- Located in Dah near village Datang, the project is a run-of-the-river scheme.
- Modi also dedicated to the nation the 220 KiloVolt Srinagar-Alusteng-Drass-Kargil-Leh transmission system.
- The Prime Minister also launched University of Ladakh, the 1st-ever in the state's region.
- It will be a cluster university comprising degree colleges of Leh, Kargil, Nubra, Zanskar, Drass and Khalsi.
- Modi also laid foundation stone for a 480 crore rupee Terminal Building at Leh Airport.
- The Prime Minister also inaugurated new tourist and trekking routes in Ladakh.
- Finance Minister Piyush Goyal, while presenting Budget 2019, on Friday announced the launch of a social security pension scheme for workers in the unorganised sector, called the Pradhan Mantri Shram Yogi Mandhan.
- Under the scheme, an assured monthly pension of Rs 3,000 per month will be provided to workers in the unorganised sector after 60 years of age.
- However, to avail of the scheme, workers will have to contribute Rs 100 month.
Science & Technology
- Iran has unveiled Hoveizeh, a surface-to-surface missile with a range of more than 1,350 kilometres during celebrations marking the 40th anniversary of the 1979 Islamic revolution.
- The Hoveizeh missile is from the Soumar family of cruise missiles, which were unveiled in 2015.
- Iran's Defence Minister : Amir Hatami
- The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is going to get its new communication satellite GSAT-31 aloft in space on February 6 from French Guiana on a hired European rocket.
- GSAT-31 will replace the INSAT-4CR.
- GSAT-31 weighs roughly 2,500 kg.
MOUs & Agreements
- Syria has signed a long-term economic cooperation deal with Iran.
- The new agreement covers the industrial, agricultural, service, infrastructure and energy sectors among others.
Awards & Honors
- The 2019 edition of Kochi Area Boat Pulling Regatta, which is one of the most prestigious and traditional naval sporting activities conducted in Indian Navy, was recently held in Kochi.
- The team from INS Dronacharya won the overall regatta trophy (called The Cock).
- The Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) School & Diving School secured the runners up position.
- Rajiv Nath was conferred with the prestigious 'Award of Appreciation' by Ashwini Kumar Choubey, Minister of State for Health & Family Welfare for his contribution to the Global Public Healthcare sector.
- Nath was honoured for his valuable, remarkable and outstanding achievements in the field of healthcare & community services for affordable Medtech access & patients safety initiatives.
Deaths
- Former Planning Commission member and ex-director of IIMC Hiten Bhaya (98) passed away.
- Bhaya was a member of the Planning Commission in the Rajiv Gandhi government and had also served as director of the Indian Institute of Mass Communication (IIMC) and chairman of Hindustan Steel.
New Appointments
- Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led panel has appointed former Madhya Pradesh Director General of Police (DGP) Rishi Kumar Shukla as the new Director fo the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for a period of two years.
- Shukla is a 1983-batch Madhya Pradesh Indian Police Service (IPS) officer.
- He replaces Alok Verma, who was removed as CBI chief by a PM Modi-led panel on January 10.
- Sanjiv Ranjan has been appointed as India's new Ambassador to the Republic of Colombia.
- Ranjan, who is the current Ambassador to Argentina, is expected to take up the assignment shortly.
- The government gave senior bureaucrat Ramesh Abhishek additional charge as Secretary of Civil Aviation Ministry.
- He takes over from R.N. Choubey who retired recently.
- Lt Gen Rajeev Chopra took charge as the Director General of NCC (DGNCC).
- Commissioned in the Madras Regiment in December 1980, Lt Gen Chopra is an alumnus of the National Defence Academy, Khadakwasla and Indian Military Academy, Dehradun.
- He has been awarded Ati Vishisht Seva Medal for his distinguished service.
Sports Current Affairs
- India defeated New Zealand by 35 runs in the 5th ODI at Wellington today to win the Five-match ODI series 4-1.
- This was the 1st time India won four matches in an ODI series in New Zealand.
- As per the latest rankings released by the ICC (International Cricket Council), Indian women's cricket team opener Smriti Mandhana has become the top-ranked batter in women's ODI cricket.
- The 22-year-old moved up three spots in the batters' rankings to reach the top spot.
