International Current Affairs
- The Parliament of Macedonia has passed the resolution to amend the constitution of the country to rename it as the Republic of Northern Macedonia.
- The renaming is in line with a landmark agreement with Greece to end a decades-long dispute.

- The Indian government is going to construct 44 "strategically important" roads along the India-China border spanning across 5 states (J&K, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh).
- The total cost of the project is estimated to be around ₹21,000 crore.
- The 1st ever India-Central Asia Dialogue was held at Uzbekistan capital Samarkand.
- The Dialogue was chaired by External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj and her Uzbek counterpart Abdulaziz Kamilov.
- It was attended by the Foreign Ministers of Afghanistan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan and the First Deputy Foreign Minister of Kazakhstan.
- During this dialogue, India and the 5 Central Asia nations have backed an inclusive peace process in Afghanistan that is Afghan-owned and Afghan-led.
- After the meeting, Ms Swaraj reiterated India's commitment to the economic reconstruction of war-torn Afghanistan.
National Current Affairs
- Sikkim chief minister Pawan Kumar Chamling today launched the 'One Family, One Job' scheme.
- This scheme envisions jobs to a member of every family which does not have a government job in the state.
- Under this scheme, all loan debts in the farming and agriculture sector would be revoked.
- 20,000 youths would immediately be given temporary jobs under the scheme.
- At present recruitments are being made for Group C and Group D posts in 12 government departments.
- Puducherry government has decided to ban the production, sale and use of single-use plastic products in the union territory from 1st March 2019.

- Gujarat has became the 1st state to implement the 10% reservation for economically weaker sections of the general category today.
- It will also be applicable to jobs for which announcement has been made but procedure is yet to commence.

- To celebrate and promote women farmers and entrepreneurs in the organic sector from the remotest parts of India, the Ministry of Women and Child Development is organising the 3-day 6th ‘Women of India Organic Festival’ from today, at Leisure Valley, Chandigarh.
- A private members bill, Right to Disconnect Bill was introduced in the Lok Sabha by MP Supriya Sule.
- Aim of this Bill : To give employees the right to not respond to communication from employers outside of office hours.
- The Right to Disconnect Bill mandates companies to detail out-of-work demands “as a way to reduce stress and ease tension between an employee’s personal and professional life,”.
- The government has drafted a 5-year action plan to address the problem of drug and substance abuse in the country.
- The National Action Plan for Drug Demand Reduction, 2018 to 2023, aims to employ a multi-pronged strategy to address the issue.
- It involves education, de-addiction and rehabilitation of affected individuals and their families.
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
- Private sector lender IDFC Bank today announced that its name has been changed to IDFC First Bank following the completion of its merger with non-banking financial company Capital First.
- The merged entity has a combined loan asset book of ₹1.03 lakh crore.
- Important Note : Capital First Founder and Chairman V Vaidyanathan has been appointed the Managing Director and CEO of the merged entity.
- The UK-based Hybrid Air Vehicles (HAV), the maker of world's longest aircraft Airlander 10, has received the Civil Aviation Authority's approval to go into full production with the model.
- The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has raised a red-flag on the spike in Non-Performing Assets (NPAs) under the government's flagship scheme to support micro enterprises in the country -- the Pradhan Mantri Mudra Yojana.
- RBI has cautioned the ministry that the scheme might turn-out to be the next big source of NPAs, which have plagued the banking system.
- The central bank has flagged that bad loans under PMMY have risen to Rs 11,000 crore.
- As per the annual report of PMMY, 2017-18, total disbursements under the scheme stood at Rs 2.46 trillion in FY 18.
- The government has decided to issue new series of Sovereign gold bonds between January 14 and January 18 at Rs 3,214 per gram and those who subscribe to the bonds online will get a discount of Rs 50 per gram.
- Note : The Sovereign gold bond scheme was introduced by the government in 2015 to reduce the demand for physical gold by shifting a part of the physical bars and coins purchased every year for investment into gold bonds.
- The National Wildlife Board has given its approval for the Trishna Gas project of ONGC (Oil and Natural Gas Corporation) which falls in the Trishna Wildlife Sanctuary in the Gomati district of Tripura.
- ONGC has discovered 10-12 gas bearing wells in the Trishna Wildlife sanctuary.
- The gas extracted from these wells would be supplied to the North Eastern Electric Power Corporation Ltd (NEEPCO) owned 100 MW gas-based thermal power project at Monarchak in Sonamura subdivision of Sipahijala district of Tripura.
