International Current Affairs
  • The North and South Korea today held a symbolic groundbreaking ceremony with an aim to modernise and reconnect severed cross-border rail and road links.
    • The construction of the projects would require exemptions from the sanctions imposed on North Korea by the United Nations. 
    • The projects are part of a move to improve bilateral relations between the Koreas.
  • Thailand has become the 1st Southeast Asian nation to legalise the use of marijuana for medical use and research. 
  • In a bid to tackle animal exploitation and abuse, the UK has banned pet shops from selling dogs and cats under six months old.  

National Current Affairs
  • PM Narendra Modi today inaugurated the 4.94-km-long Bogibeel bridge in Assam's Dibrugarh.
    • This is India's longest rail-road bridge.
    • This bridge will connect the north and south banks of the Brahmaputra and reduce travel time from Assam to Arunachal Pradesh to four hours. 
    • It has a serviceable period of around 120 years.
  • Telangana and Andhra Pradesh states will have separate High Courts from January 1, 2019. 
    • President Ram Nath Kovind today issued orders stating that Andhra Pradesh will have a separate HC which will function from Amravati (capital of the state). 
    • Note : Since the bifurcation of the state on June 2, 2014, Andhra and Telangana have had a common HC at Hyderabad.
  • Sadaiv Atal, the Samadhi of former PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee was dedicated to the Nation on his birth Anniversary.
    • To emphasise on the unity in diversity, stones from various parts of the country have been used in the construction of Samadhi near Rajghat in New Delhi.   
  • Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar has announced the renaming of Child Care Institutes being run in the state as Jagannath Ashrams
  • Jammu and Kashmir Governor Satya Pal Malik today inaugurated a ropeway from Mata Vaishno Devi to Bhairon Mandir. 
    • The Bhawan-Bhairon Passenger Ropeway Project has cost around ₹85 crore and has a carrying capacity of 800 persons per hour. 
    • The ropeway would reduce one-way journey between Bhawan and Bhairon Mandir from one hour to three minutes.
  • Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has announced the installation of a 25 feet statue of former Prime Minister late Atal Bihari Vajpayee in the Lok Bhawan in Lucknow. 
    • The announcement comes on the occasion of 94th birth anniversary of Vajpayee. 
  • Union Health Minister J P Nadda has announced that India’s  largest cancer hospital, the National Cancer Institute will be inaugurated in Haryana’s Jhajjar district in January.
    • The Institute aims to bridge the deficit of tertiary cancer care in the northern region. 
    • The Institute would play a pivotal role in cancer research in the country.
  • Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has launched the ‘Bharat Ratna Atal Bihari Vajpayee International Schools’ for students in rural areas.
    • The schools are affiliated to the Maharashtra International Education Board (MIEB), set up by the state government with an aim to achieve higher education standards. 
    • The curriculum of these schools will be in the mother tongue.  
  • Tamil Nadu government has announced the setting up of country’s 1st music museum with assistance from the Central government in Thiruvaiyaru which is the birthplace of Saint Tyagaraja, one of the Trinities of Carnatic music. 
    • The other two of the Trinity are Muthuswami Dikshitar and Syama Sastri.S

Places in News
  • To mark the 75th anniversary of Netaji's visit to the islands, the Centre is going to rename Ross Island, Neil Island and Havelock Island in Andaman and Nicobar as Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Island, Shaheed Dweep and Swaraj Dweep respectively.  

Recent Committees in News
  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has appointed former Governor Bimal Jalan as the Chairman of the newly formed Economic Capital Framework committee.
    • This committee has been formed to address the issue of RBI reserves.
    • The committee will submit its report within a period of 90 days from the date of its 1st meeting. 
    • Members of the Committee :
      • N S Vishwanathan (RBI Deputy Governor)
      • S C Garg (Economic Affairs Secretary)

Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) will soon introduce new Rs. 20 currency notes with additional features.
    • Despite the new notes coming into circulation, the old Rs.20 notes will not be withdrawn, the report added. .
    • Note : According to RBI data, about 10 billion pieces of Rs. 20 banknotes were in circulation in March 2018.
  • According to a recent data presented in Indian Parliament, Private sector lender ICICI Bank penalised the highest number of employees for their involvement in frauds between 2015 and 2017. 
    • In total, Scheduled commercial banks operating in India took action against 13,949 officials, of which 16%, or 2,236, belonged to ICICI.
    • ICICI was followed by State Bank of India (1,287) and Punjab National Bank (1,127).
  • Indian firm India Ports Global Limited formally took over the operations of Chabahar's Shaheed Behesti port in Iran, which opens a trade route between India and central Asia bypassing Pakistan. 
    • The company opened its office following the first meeting of the follow-up committee for implementation of the trilateral Chabahar Agreement between India, Iran and Afghanistan.
  • India which is the largest producer and consumer of milk has extended the ban on import of milk products from China for 4 months. 
    • The ban would continue till 23rd April 2019 as per the notification issued by the Ministry of Commerce. 

Awards & Honors
  • The Madhya Pradesh Government has conferred the annual Tansen Samman 2018  upon eminent Sitar Player Manju Mehta for her contribution in the field of Hindustani Classical Music. 
    • The award was presented by Union Minister Narendra Singh Tomar on inaugural function of Tansen Music Festival in Gwalior.
  • Mohammed Rafi Award instituted by the NGO Spandan Arts was bestowed upon late music composer Laxmikant Shantaram Kudalkar and playback singer Usha Timothy

Science & Technology
  • Railway Minister Piyush Goyal today officially declared Train 18 as India's fastest train
    • The indigenously built engineless train having 16 fully air-conditioned coaches will cut journey time by 15% compared to Shatabdi.
  • Coal India for the first time, has started using an indigenously-made, 205-tonne electric dumper, a critical piece of equipment in mining. 
    • This indigenously-made dumper has been developed by state-owned BEML.
    • This indigenously-made dumper is the biggest one deployed by Northern Coalfields limited.
  • The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has completed the 4th manoeuvre to position the GSAT-7A military communication satellite closer to its final position. 
    • The satellite is currently between 35,800 and 36,092 kilometres from earth and is very close to its final position in the geostationary orbit, which is located at an altitude of around 35,786 km from Earth. 

Deaths
  • Indian midwife, Padma Shri awardee Sulagitti Narasamma (98), who helped deliver over 15,000 babies free of charge in rural Karnataka has passed away.
  • Former Union Minister Captain Jai Narain Prasad Nishad (88) passed away.
    • He was a four-time Lok Sabha member from Muzaffarpur constituency of Bihar, and served as a member of Rajya Sabha between 2004-2008.

New Appointments
  • The Executive Director of Canara Bank, P V Bharathi has been appointed as the new Managing Director (MD) and CEO of state-run Corporation Bank
    • She will take over charge on or after February 1, 2019, and remain in the post till March 31, 2020. 
    • Note : Birupaksha Mishra was appointed as Executive Director in Corporation Bank.
  • Indian-American Rajesh Subramaniam, an IIT Bombay graduate from Thiruvananthapuram, has been named as the President and Chief Executive Officer of US courier delivery giant FedEx Express.  
  • Sangeeta Verma, a former Indian Economic Services (IES) officer has joined the Competition Commission of India (CCI) as a Member.  
    • Important Note : The CCI is now at its full strength with Ashok Kumar Gupta as Chairperson, Sangeeta Verma, Augustine Peter and UC Nahta as members
  • Cash-strapped Infrastructure Leasing & Financial Services (IL&FS) today appointed retired IAS officer Bijay Kumar as its Deputy Managing Director (MD)
    • The company also appointed Chartered Accountant N Srinivasan as a non-executive director on its board.
