- Today (15th December) is International Tea Day.
- This day aims to draw global attention of governments and citize4ns to the impact of the global tea trade on workers, small growers and consumers.
- Note : The 1st International Tea Day was celebrated in New Delhi on 15th December 2005.
- Reversing decades of Middle East policy, the Australian government formally recognised West Jerusalem as Israel's capital.
- Note : Israel regards all of Jerusalem as its capital, including the eastern sector that it annexed after the 1967 Middle East war.
- The German Parliament today approved 'Diverse' as a 3rd gender option on official records.
- The move followed a ruling by Germany's highest court which required the government to either allow a third gender or to scrap gender classification altogether.
- The Irish Parliament today passed a bill to legalise abortions following a landmark referendum earlier this year.
- The legislation allows for terminations to be carried out up to the 12th week of a pregnancy, in the case of a fatal foetal abnormality or where the physical or mental health of the mother is in danger.
- Sri Lankan Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa resigned from the post amid the political crisis in the country.
- Ranil Wickremesinghe is likely to take oath as the island nation's prime minister tomorrow.
Awards & Honors
- Writer Amitav Ghosh has been conferred with the 54th Jnanpith Award, a literary award presented to an author for "outstanding contribution towards literature".
- With this, Ghosh has become the 1st Indian writer in English to win the award.
People in News
- Spain's Angela Ponce is the 1st transgender contestant in Miss Universe's 66-year history.
- She started working as a model at the age of 18 and is also the first transgender woman to win the title of Miss Universe Spain.
- Ponce currently works as a volunteer at a foundation in Spain that helps children and families deal with gender identity issues.
Deaths
- 'The Zee Horror Show' co-director Tulsi Ramsay (77)of the Ramsay Brothers passed away.
- Tulsi had co-directed 'The Zee Horror Show' with his brother Shyam Ramsay.
- The Ramsay Brothers - Tulsi, Kumar, Shyam, Keshu, Arjun, Gangu and Kiran - produced a series of horror shows through the '80s and '90s.
Science & Technology
- Adani Defence and Aerospace and Israel's Elbit Systems jointly inaugurated India's first private Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) manufacturing facility in Hyderabad.
- The 50,000-square feet Adani Elbit UAV complex would also be the first outside Israel to manufacture Elbit's Hermes 900 Medium Altitude Long Endurance UAV.
- The plant has been set up at an initial cost of $15 million.
New Appointments
- Mizo National Front chief Zoramthanga was sworn in as the Chief Minister of Mizoram .
- Senior Congress leader Ashok Gehlot will be sworn in as the Chief Minister of Rajasthan,
- State Congress President Sachin Pilot has been selected as the state's Deputy Chief Minister.
- US President Donald Trump has appointed budget head Mick Mulvaney to serve as the acting White House Chief of Staff.
- He will replace General John Kelly who is set to step down by the end of the year.
- The Walt Disney Company has announced the appointment of Uday Shankar as Chairman of Star and Disney India, and President of The Walt Disney Company Asia Pacific.
