National Current Affairs
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his visit to Port Blair officially announced the renaming of three islands in Andaman & Nicobar
    • They are :
      • Ross Island will now be called Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Dweep
      • Neil Island will now be called Shaheed Dweep
      • Havelock Island will now be called Swaraj Dweep
    • Modi also hoisted a 150-feet-high national flag at Port Blair.
  • The new government of Rajasthan has abolished the condition of a minimum educational qualification to contest local body elections
    • The cabinet also decided on holding the election of mayors and chairman’s in corporations through the direct system instead of the indirect method introduced by the previous government.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the International Rice Research Institute South Asia Regional Centre (IRRI SARC) in Varanasi. 
    • It is the 6th campus of IRRI SARC. 
    • The institute will complement the government’s effort to double farmer’s income by 2022.
  • The proposal from the states of Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Mizoram, Chhattisgarh, Karnataka and Madhya Pradesh for the implementation of Mahila Police Volunteer Scheme has been approved by the union government.
    • Under the scheme, the Mahila Police volunteer is required to mobilize community to form Mahila and ShishuRakshak Dals (MASRD) to act as community watch groups.
    • This scheme was initiated by the Ministry of Women and Child Development in collaboration with the Ministry of Home Affairs.
    • Haryana was the first state to adopt the initiative of Mahila Police Volunteer at Karnal and Mahindergarh District on a pilot basis under the Nirbhaya Fund during the financial year 2016-2017.
  • Union Petroleum Minister Dharmendra Pradhan today launched the Ujjwala Sanitary Napkin initiative in Bhubaneswar, which will expand women’s access to hygiene products and provide them with employment opportunities in every district of the state.
    • This is a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative taken by oil marketing companies. 
    • The Central scheme will be a counter to the Odisha government’s Khushi scheme, in which sanitary napkins are provided free of cost to female students of government and government-aided schools in the state.
    • Under this programme, 100 manufacturing units will come up at the common services centres (CSCs) covering 93 blocks in all 30 districts of the state. 
Science & Technology
  • A Chinese space probe, Chang’e-4, has entered the elliptical lunar orbit in preparation to land on the dark side of the Moon for the first time
    • The probe, carried by a Long March-3B rocket, had been launched earlier this month. 
    • The probe, which includes a lander and a rover, is tasked with exploring the Moon’s surface.
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • As per a recent report by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), Banks recovered bad loans worth ₹40,400 crore in 2017-18.
    • The loans were recovered through channels like the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (IBC), SARFAESI Act, Debt Recovery Tribunals and Lok Adalats
  • The Indian Railways has devised a first-of-its-kind policy to allow companies to advertise on trains in exchange for their goods and services for passengers
    • Items like soaps, dispensers and bedrolls can be offered by companies. 
  • To encourage indigenous and specialized products and crafts of the state, the government of Uttar Pradesh has initiated One District, One Product scheme
    • The scheme aims to capitalize the rich heritage of the Uttar Pradesh by reviving them through modernization and publicisation to enhance the reach of these products.
  • In its annual report, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has announced that the number of ATMs has declined marginally to 2.07 lakh in the financial year 2018 from 2.08 lakh in the financial year 2017.
    • The main reason behind this is the branch rationalisation by a few public sector banks.
    • Similarly, the number of operational on-site ATMs also reduced to 1.06 lakh during the year from 1.09 lakh in FY17, while that of off-site ATMs increased to 1 lakh from 98,545.

  • Divya Patidar Joshi (Madhya Pradesh) was crowned with the Mrs. India 2018 title at the Mrs. India My Identity Beauty Pageant 2018 finale held in New Delhi. 
  • PM Narendra Modi released a commemorative stamp on Maharaja Suheldev, a semi-legendary king whose references are found somewhere between the boundary of fiction and history.
    • He described Maharaja Suheldev as a brave warrior and a hero who inspires the people and said that the Union Government is determined to preserve the legacy of all those who contributed to the cause of India’s defence and security, and to its social life. 
  • Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh was conferred the ‘Champions of Change’ Award by Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu for exemplary leadership in bringing about transformation in governance
    • The other awardees are :
      • Sadhvi Niranjan Jyoti (Union Minister of State for Food Processing)
      • Sudarshan (Union Minister for Tribal Affairs)
      • Nishikant Dubey (Member of Parliament)
Recent Committees in News
  • The government will soon be appointing a committee to oversee the implementation of the recommendations of the Doubling Farmers’ Income (DFI) committee
    • This committee will oversee the implementations of various recommendations and have specific terms of reference.
    • Together with supervising and monitoring, it will even handhold those involved in implementing the recommendations. 
    • The immediate and greater attention will be given to tapping of the low-hanging fruits in production and post-production stages of agriculture.
New Appointments
  • Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has secured her 3rd consecutive term, with a landslide victory.
    • Her ruling party and its allies have won 288 of the 300 parliamentary seats contested, surpassing its previous election wins.
Sports Current Affairs
  • Director General of Sports Authority of India (SAI), Neelam Kapur has announced that the Sports Ministry has earmarked ₹100 crore for funding the athletes under the Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS) ahead of 2020 Olympics in Tokyo. 
    • Under the scheme, the athletes were also given financial assistance to prepare for Commonwealth Games and Asian Games.
