Justice Ranjan Gogoi sworn in as the 46th Chief Justice of India

Justice Ranjan Gogoi today sworn in as the 46th Chief Justice of India (CJI). He is the first person from the northeast to become the Chief Justice of India. He will have a tenure of a little over 13 months and will retire on 17th November 2019. 

As CJI, Justice Gogoi will also be heading the bench of the top court that, for the first time in its history, will face a camera inside the courtroom for live-streaming of the proceedings.

Gogoi has replaced Justice Dipak Mishra who retired on 1st October 2018. President Ram Nath Kovind administered the oath at a brief ceremony in Rashtrapathi Bhavan's Darbar Hall.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan, Home Minister Rajnath Singh, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, former prime ministers Manmohan Singh and HD Deve Gowda were among the dignitaries who were present at the ceremony.

He is known to be a soft-spoken but tough judge. He was among the four judges who, in January, criticised Chief Justice Misra in a rare press conference and accused him of misusing his role of assigning cases as the Supreme Court's Master of the Roster.

  • He is the 1st Chief Justice from the North Eastern region of India.
  • He was born on 18th November 1954.
  • He was appointed as Permanent Judge of Gauhati High Court.
  • He was transferred to Punjab & Haryana High Court on 9th SEptember 2010.
  • He was appointed as Chief Justice of Punjab & Haryana High Court on 12th February 2011.
  • Elevated as the Suprme Court's Judge on 23rd April 2012.
