International Affairs
  • Today (2nd October) is International Day of Non-Violence, the birthday of Mahatma Gandhi.
    • In January 2004, Iranian Nobel laureate Shirin Ebadi had taken a proposal for an International Day of Non-Violence.
    • On 15 June 2007 the United Nations General Assembly voted to establish 2nd October as the International Day of Non-Violence.
National Current Affairs
  • The Nation pays homage to the Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi on his 149th Birth anniversary today.
  • Nation pays homage to former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri on his 114th Birth anniversary today.
    • Shastri served as prime minister from June 9, 1964, until his sudden death in Tashkent, Uzbekistan on January 11, 1966.
    • He successfully led the nation during the 22-day war with Pakistan in 1965. 
    • He gave the slogan of 'Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan', which led to a rare display of unity in the country during India-Pakistan war.
Awards & Honors
  • The 2018 Nobel Prize in Physics has been awarded for inventions in laser physics with one half to Arthur Ashkin and the other half to GĂ©rard Mourou and Donna Strickland
    • Ashkin was awarded "for the optical tweezers and their application to biological systems".
    • Mourou and Strickland were awarded "for their method of generating high-intensity, ultra-short optical pulses".
  • Bollywood Actor-director Pankaj Kapur was honoured with 'Icons of Indian Cinema' Award at the closing ceremony of the 9th edition of Jagran Film Festival .
    • Varun Dhawan received 'Best Actor' for the film, October, Zoya Hussain won 'Best Actress' award for her impressive performance in Mukkabaaz.  
    • Victor's History was honored as the Best Foreign Feature Film and Village Rockstars as the 'Best Indian Feature Film'.
  • Badminton player and Olympian P V Sindhu is the only sportsperson featuring in the Forbes India's maiden 'tycoons of tomorrow' list of 22 young achievers in the fields of business, acting and sports.
    • Other prominent names in the list are Karan Adani, chief executive of Adani Ports & Special Economic Zone; Anant Goenka, group executive director of Indian Express; Ashni Biyani, managing director of Future Consumer; and the Birla scion Ananya Birla, founder of Svatantra Microfinance, co-founder, CuroCarte and co-founder of Mpower.
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) today announced that it would inject ₹36,000 crore liquidity into the system through purchase of government bonds in October amid fears of a potential credit crunch.
    • The central bank's move comes after the government recently announced that it will cut gross borrowings by ₹70,000 crore in the second half of the current fiscal.
  • India's largest lender State Bank of India (SBI) has reduced the cash withdrawal limits on its Classic and Maestro debit cards from ₹40,000 to ₹20,000 per day with effect from October 31.
New Appointments
  • India-born Harvard University professor Gita Gopinath has been appointed as the Chief Economist of the International Monetary Fund (IMF).  
    • She is going to replace Maurice Obstfeld, who is going to retire in December 2018.
  • Former Facebook VP of News Feed Adam Mosseri has been appointed the new head of Instagram following the resignation of Instagram Co-founders Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger last week. 
  • Jayant Mammen Mathew, Executive Editor of Malayala Manorama, was today elected as the President of the Indian Newspaper Society (INS), an apex body of India's print media industry.
    • He was elected to the top post for the year 2018-19.
    • He is going to replace Akila Urankar of Business Standard.
  • Senior diplomat Vikram Misri has been appointed as India’s next ambassador to China.'
    • He will replace Gautam Bambawale
    • Misri, a 1989-batch India Foreign Service (IFS) officer, is presently serving as Indian envoy in Myanmar.
Sports Current Affairs
  • The Central Information Commission (CIC) today brought Indian cricket governing body BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) under the RTI (Right to Information) Act.
    • The commission also directed BCCI to put online and offline mechanisms in place within 15 days to receive RTI queries.
