International Current Affairs
  • The President of India Ram Nath Kovind, who is on a State visit to Greece held delegation level talks with the President of Greece, Prokopis Pavlopoulos and Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras.
    • During this meeting, Kovind emphasized the age-old civilizational ties between the two nations and highlighted India’s commitment to promote trade and investment engagement between the two nations
    • He also informed the Greek delegation that India had accepted the invitation to participate in the prestigious Thessaloniki International Fair 2019 as the “Honoured Country”.
  • In it's recently released  International Classification of Diseases (ICD) 11, the World Health Organisation (WHO) has classified Gaming addiction as mental health disorder
    • This classification will be used by health professionals across the globe to uniformly diagnose and classify risks for addictive gaming behaviour.
    • The WHO also announced that being Transgender will no longer be classified as mental illness.
  • According to a recently released report by global think-tank SIPRI (Stockholm International Peace Research Institute), Pakistan, with 140-150 nuclear warheads, is ahead of India which has 130-140 warheads.
    • Meanwhile, US and Russia are on top with 6,450 and 6,850 warheads, respectively.
    • According to SIPRI, nine countries — the United States, Russia, Britain, France, China, India, Pakistan, Israel and North Korea — had 14,465 nuclear warheads at the beginning of this year, of which 3,750 were actually deployed.
  • Ahead of 4th International Day of Yoga (June 21) the Australian Parliament for the 1st time organized a Yoga session.
    • Important Note : It was the first time that the International Yoga Day was celebrated in any Parliament.
National Current Affairs
  • The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has pulled out of the alliance with Jammu and Kashmir Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) over repeated attacks on forces and civilians in the Valley. 
    • Minutes after this announcement, Jammu & Kashmir's Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti submitted her resignation to the Governor.
  • India's first café which will be run by HIV-positive teenagers is set to open in West Bengal's Kolkata next month. 
    • The café will be operated by 10 teenagers who were abandoned by their families after being diagnosed.
  • Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology (MeitY) is going to expand its India BPO Promotion Scheme to 1 lakh seats from current 48,000 seats.
    • It will also set up 5th and India’s largest National data centre (NDC) in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh with capacity of 5 lakh virtual servers.
    • About India BPO Promotion Scheme (IBPS)
    • This scheme was launched in the year 2014.
    • Aim of IBPS Scheme : To incentivize establishment of BPO firms and their extension to Tier II and Tier III cities (as per census 2011) to provide employment, distributed across various states in proportion to population of state with financial support in form of Viability Gap Funding (VGF).
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • Concerned over funds sent abroad under the ‘Maintenance of Close Relative’ category of the Liberalised Remittance Scheme (LRS), the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has narrowed the definition of relatives to check the flow of funds.
    • Hence, funds under the ‘maintenance of close relative’ category can be sent only to immediate relatives such as parents, spouses, children and their spouses. 
  • India's fourth largest private sector bank, Yes Bank today announced that it has received approval from market regulator Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) for acting as custodian of securities.
    • Important Note : Custodian of securities is a licence granted by SEBI to eligible entities allowing them to offer custodial services to financial market participants including foreign institutional investors (FIIs) and foreign portfolio investors (FPIs).
Science & Technology
  • The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) has commissioned Fast Patrol Vessel (FPV) ICGS Rani Rashmoni, in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh. 
    • It is 5th and last ship to be commissioned in the series of Fast Patrol Vessel (FPV) project of ICG. 
    • It is named after legendary Rani Rashmoni of Kolkata, and is equipped with most advanced and sophisticated communication and navigational sensors and equipment.
New Appointments
  • The CEO of ICICI Prudential Life Insurance, Sandee Bakhshi has been appointed as the Wholetime Director and Chief Operating Officer (COO) of ICICI Bank.
    • Note : Chanda Kochhar, managing director (MD) & chief executive officer (CEO) will be on leave, amid allegations of a quid pro quo in transactions between Videocon Industries, Kochhar and her husband Deepak Kochhar’s company NuPower Renewables.
MOUs & Agreements
  • During Indian President Kovind's visit to Greece, both countries signed 3 Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs). They are :
    • MoU between Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) and National Quality Infrastructure System/Hellenic Organization for Standardization on Cooperation in the Fields of Standardization.
    • MoU between Foreign Service Institute (FSI), India and Diplomatic Academy, Greece on Cooperation in Diplomatic Training.
    • The Programme of Cultural Cooperation for the year 2018-2020.
  • The Central Water Commission (CWC) has signed collaboration agreement with search engine giant Google for flood forecasting and dissemination of flood related information to masses. 
    • This initiative will help crisis management agencies to deal extreme hydrological events in better manner for effective flood management in India under National Hydrology Project (NHP).
Awards & Honors
  • Eminent scholar and social activist Pushpa Bhave has been selected for the 'Rajarshi Shahu Puraskar 2018'.
    • She will be conferred the award on June 26 on the occasion of the birth anniversary of Rajarshi Shahu, a former ruler of the erstwhile princely state of Kolhapur.
Sports Current Affairs
  • American professional golfer Brooks Koepka wins US Open 2018 (Golf) by defeating Tommy Fleetwood at Shinnecock Hills.
    • With this, Brooks became the first player in 3 decades to successfully defend his title
  • North Korea and South Korea today announced that the two countries would march together at the upcoming Asian Games
    • The Koreas also agreed to hold a joint basketball match in Pyongyang.
