International Current Affairs
  • Today (6th May 2018) is International No Diet Day.
    • This day  is an annual celebration of body acceptance, including fat acceptance and body shape diversity. 
    • Note : The  symbol of International No Diet Day is a light blue ribbon
  • Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu spoke with three key international leaders including Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, about the Iranian nuclear archives acquired by Israel.
    • Netanyahu spoke with Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and British Prime Minister Theresa May
    • During these talks, he discussed regional issues with them and also updated them on the important material that he revealed regarding the Iranian nuclear archive.
    • This comes after Netanyahu accused Iran of running a secret nuclear weapons programme in violation of the 2015 deal with world powers
    • Netanyahu has called for global support to "fix" the nuclear deal.
  • Israel today announced its withdrawal from the bid for a Non-permanent seat at the UN Security Council (UNSC) for the 2019-2020 term.
    • Israel was competing with Germany and Belgium for one of the two seats allocated to the Western European and Others Group. 
    • Important Note : The UN Security Council  has five permanent and 10 non-permanent members who are elected for a two-year term.
  • Lebanese voters went to the polls to elect their parliament for the first time in nine years today.
  • 9 months after assuming office, Vice-President M. Venkaiah Naidu is going on his maiden foreign visit to the South American countries of Guatemala, Panama and Peru today.
    • During his visit to the three countries from May 6 to 12, Mr. Naidu will meet the heads of the three countries. 
    • Highlights of this visit :
      • His visit to Guatemala is to reassert Indian influence. Guatemala has supported India’s permanent membership in the United Nation’s Security Council. It also has strained relations with both China and Pakistan.
      • His visit to Panama is also important because of growing engagement between China and Panama. The country also has the highest presence of Indian diaspora of 15,000. 
      • During his visit to Peru, Mr. Naidu will participate in the celebration of 55 years of diplomatic ties between the two countries.
National Current Affairs
  • In Assam, 97.3-meter tall National flag, the tallest in the country - will be installed under  Guwahati under Smart City Mission.
    • This work is being commissioned by the Industries and Commerce Department in association with Smart City Mission.
  • Punjab government along World Wildlife Fund (WWF)-India are conducting first organised census of Indus Dolphins
    • The organised census aims at conservation of the species.
    • Important Note : Indus Dolphin is one of the world’s rarest mammals found only in India and Pakistan
  • National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG) has partnered with board Survey of India, to facilitate the Ganga rejuvenation task under Namami Gange programme by using Geographic Information System (GIS) technology. 
    • Through the project, NMCG aims to strengthen planning and implementation at national, state and local levels.
MOUs & Agreements
  • NITI Aayog has signed Statement of Intent (SoI) with IBM to develop Crop Yield Prediction Model using Artificial Intelligence (AI) to provide real time advisory to farmers in Aspirational Districts.
    • The partnership aims to work together towards use of technology to provide insights to farmers to improve soil yield, crop productivity, control agricultural inputs with overarching goal of improving farmers’ incomes
Deaths
  • Well-known Gandhian, freedom fighter & writer Keyur Bhushan (90) passed away. 
    • Bhushan took part in the 1942 Quit India movement as a student in Raipur and was incarcerated. 
    • He penned novels, collections of short stories and poems. 
    • He also edited ‘Sapthahik Chhattisgarh’ and ‘Antyoday’.
Science & Technology
  • China successfully launched “APSTAR-6C”, a new communication satellite into orbit. 
    • It was launched onboard of Long March-3B carrier rocket from Xichang Satellite Launch Center.
    • With is successful launch, the satellite joins fleet of four fully operational satellites belonging to APT Satellite Co. and will replace the in-orbit Apstar-6 satellite.
Recent Committees in News
  • The GST Council in its 27th meeting has constituted two Group of Ministers (GoM) to consider issues related to Incentivizing digital payments in GST regime & Imposition of Cess on Sugar under GST.
    • 1st GoM : This group will consider the issues relating to incentivizing digital payments in GST regime. 
      • Head of this GOM : Sushil Kumar Modi, (Deputy Chief Minister, Bihar) 
    • 2nd GoM: This group will consider issues relating to imposition of Cess on Sugar under GST.  
      • Head of this GOM : Himanta Biswa Sarma (Finance Minister of Assam)
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • SP Rajya Sabha MP Jaya Bachchan recently declared assets worth ₹1,000 crore, making her India's richest politician
    • Congress MP Abhishek Singhvi with assets worth ₹860 crore stood at 2nd spot. 
    • TDP MP Jayadev Galla with assets worth ₹683 crore is at the 3rd position.
New Appointments
  • Chandra Shekhar Ghosh has been reappointed as Managing director and chief executive officer (MD & CEO) of Bandhan Bank for a period of three years from July 10, 2018.
  • Harun Rasid Khan, former deputy governor at Reserve Bank of India, has joined Bandhan Bank board.
    • He has replaced PK Saha in Bandhan board.
  • Justice Ajay Kumar Mittal has been appointed as the Acting chief justice of the Punjab and Haryana High Court
    • The appointment comes soon after incumbent chief justice Shivax Jal Vazifdar demitted office at midnight upon his retirement.
