International Current Affairs
  • Today (23rd May) is World Turtle Day.
    • The purpose of this day is to bring attention to, and increase knowledge of and respect for, turtles and tortoises, and encourage human action to help them survive and thrive.
  • India ranked 145th among 195 countries in terms of Healthcare access and quality (HAQ) index.
    • The index was released as part of Global Burden of Disease study released by Lancet, one of the world’s oldest and best known peer-reviewed general medical journal.

      • Finland 
      • Australia
  • China's state-run Islamic Association has declared all mosques in the country should raise the national flag to "promote a spirit of patriotism" among Muslims.  
    • Mosques should also publicly display information on the ruling party's "core socialist values", the association added.
National Current Affairs
  • With a declared income of Rs 82.76 crore, the Samajwadi Party is the richest of the 32 regional parties in India, a report by Association for Democratic Reforms revealed today. 
    • Top 3 in the list :

      • Telugu Desam Party (TDP)- Rs 72.92 crore 
      • All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) - Rs 48.88 crore
  • Ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, the Election Commission of India (ECI) is going to launch a multi-lingual mobile application titled Model Code of Conduct Violation Reporting App
    • This app aims at empowering people across the country to share evidence of malpractice by political parties, their candidates and activists directly with ECI.
  • For disease monitoring and strengthening tele-medicine services in the government hospitals, the Rajasthan Government has launched new software titled Nidaan
    • This software will help providing presumptive diagnosis and monitoring of seasonal and non-communicable diseases as well as trends of ailments found in specific areas.
Awards & Honors
  • Polish novelist  Olga Tokarczuk has won this year's Man Booker International Prize 2018 for her novel 'Flights'.
    • With this she became the first Polish writer to receive the award
    • The £50,000 prize will be split evenly between the writer and her translator, Jennifer Croft.
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • India's largest bank State Bank of India (SBI) is planning to list its general insurance business and cards business by 2019-20.
    • The bank is also looking to bring in a partner for investment advisory businesses SBI Capital Markets and sell 24-49% stake in it. 
    • Last year, the lender had listed its life insurance arm SBI Life Insurance.
  • China today announced that it will slash the import duty on passenger cars to 15% starting July 1 from the current 25% which has been in place for over a decade. 
  • The United States has tightened financial sanctions against Venezuela following President Nicolas Maduro's victory in election.
    • The sanctions include the sale, transfer, assignment, or pledging as collateral by the Venezuela government of any interest in any entity in which it has a 50 percent or greater ownership interest.
Deaths
  • One of the great American authors, Philip Roth (85) passed away.
    • The Pulitzer, National Book Award and Man Booker International Prize-winning novelist's work drew its inspiration from Jewish family life, sex and American ideals.
    • His works included American Pastoral, I Married a Communist and Portnoy's Complaint.
  • Veteran Telugu writer, novelist Yaddanapudi Sulochana Rani (78) passed away.
    • She was considered among the top fiction writers of her time.
    • Some of her most popular works include Aagamana, Aathmeeyulu, Abhijata, Secretary, Jeevana Tarangalu and Kalala Kougili.
Science & Technology
  • Elon Musk-led SpaceX launched GRACE-FO satellites, that would track the Earth's water movement and ice melt. 
    • The twin NASA satellites track movement of mass by measuring deviations caused in their 220-km separation with a hair-width accuracy by gravitational changes.
  • Israel today claimed to be the first country to have used the US-made F-35 fighter jets in combat. 
    • The Israeli Air Force said that the planes were used in operations in the Middle East and added that the jets had "already attacked twice on two different fronts". 
New Appointments
  • JD(S) leader HD Kumaraswamy took oath as Chief minister of Karnataka  on the steps of the Vidhana Soudha, the state secretariat.
    • Governor Vajubhai Vala administered the oath of office.
  • 5-time Congress MLA G Parameshwara was selected as the Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister
    • Important Note : Parameshwara is the first Dalit leader to be appointed to the post. 
  • Congress MLA KR Ramesh Kumar has been selected as the Karnataka Assembly Speaker.
  • Tata Steel has put in place a new management team at Bhushan Steel after its ₹35,200 crore takeover through India's new insolvency process. 
    • Rajeev Singhal, a Vice President at Tata, has taken over as the new Managing Director
    • Sanjib Nanda has been appointed as the Chief Financial Officer (CFO).
    • Ujjal Chakraborti has been appointed as the Chief Operating Officer (COO).
Sports Current Affairs
  • Coimbatore racer Bala Prasath has won the Formula Junior Racing Series 2018 Championship in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu.
