The Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government went for a major Cabinet reshuffle on 3rd September 2017. Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi, Dharmendra Pradhan, Nirmala Sitharaman and Piyush Goyal, who were all holding independent charge as state ministers, were promoted to the cabinet rank. 

Nirmala Sitharaman will India's new Defence Minister while Piyush Goyal will be the new Railways Minister. Apart from Railways, Goyal retains the ministry of coal. Suresh Prabhu, who exits as Rail Minister, will be the new Commerce Minister, the department that was held by Ms Sitharaman. Arun Jaitley sheds Defence and will retain the Finance Ministry.

  • This is the 3rd reshuffle since Modi took charge as Prime Minister.
  • 4 Junior Ministers were elevated to the cabinet rank.
  • 9 new ministers have been inducted in the Union Cabinet.
  • Two key portfolios - Defence and Foreign Affairs are now with women.
  • Nirmala Sitharaman First Woman Defence Minister After Indira Gandhi.
  • Four ministers - Piyush Goyal, Nirmala Sitharaman, Dharmendra Pradhan, Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi - were elevated to the cabinet level.
  • Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore is the first sportsperson to hold the Sports ministry.
