International Current Affairs
- 9th BRICS Summit was started today at Xiamen, China.
- Chinese President, Xi Jinping called on BRICS countries to adopt a holistic approach to fight terrorism in all its forms and ensure that terrorists have no place to hide.
- About 9th BRICS Summit :
- Host Country : China
- Motto : BRICS: Stronger Partnership for a Brighter Future
- Note : For the second time the China has hosted the summit after the 2011 summit.
- This summit will be held during 3rd to 5th September 2107.
- BRICS Countries - Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa
- The Tajikistan government has banned women from wearing hijab and has introduced a legislation asking them to "stick to traditional national clothes and culture".
- Important Note : 98% of Tajikistan's population are Muslims.
New Appointments
- PM Narendra Modi expanded his Cabinet today, inducting 9 new ministers and promoting four.
- Former MoS Nirmala Sitharaman became the Defence Minister, only the second woman after Indira Gandhi.
- Piyush Goyal has been appointed as the Union Railway Minister.
- This is the Third reshuffle since 2014.
- The total strength of the Council of Ministers now is 76.

Science & Technology
- 57 year old NASA astronaut Peggy Whitson, the world's most experienced spacewoman, has returned to Earth after clocking cumulative 665 days in space.
- Whitson, also the only woman to command $100-billion ISS twice, earlier broke Sunita Williams' record of most spacewalks by a woman.
- The government today issued an alert for 'Locky' ransomware that locks all files on a computer and demands 0.5 Bitcoins (around ₹1.5 lakh) to unlock them.
- The ransomware is being spread through a spam email in circulation through over 23 million messages containing common subjects like "please print" and "documents".
- Germany-based European XFEL (X-ray Free Electron Laser), the largest and most powerful X-ray laser in the world, has officially begun research operations.
- The 3.4-km-long underground laser can generate up to 27,000 pulses per second, 200 times more than other X-ray lasers.
Recent Committees in News
- The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports has approved constitution of 13-member Empowered Steering Committee (ESC) to shape and influence India’s preparation for multi-disciplinary events, including 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games.
- The decision to form ESC was taken on basis of recommendations made by Olympic Task Force headed by Abinav Bindra in its interim report.
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
- The Rajaswa Gyan Sangam 2017, a two-day annual conference of senior tax administrators was recently held at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi.
- It was inaugurated Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
- The conference was jointly organised by Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) and Central Board of Excise & Customs (CBEC).
- Objective of Rajaswa Gyan Sangam 2017 : To enable two-way communication between policy-makers and senior officers in field offices with view to increase revenue collection and facilitate effective implementation of law and policies in key result areas.
- The government waived off late filing fee for all registered taxpayers who failed to file their first GST returns within the deadline.
Sports Current Affairs
- Olympic silver medal-winning shooter Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore was named the Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports.
- With this, he became the first sportsperson to hold the position.
- British F1 driver Lewis Hamilton broke the all-time record for pole positions by taking his career's 69th at the Italian Grand Prix today.
- 5-time world champion Viswanathan Anand will return to the FIDE World Cup after 15 years, leading a seven-member Indian team at the 128-player knock out tournament in Georgia.
