Hindu Editorial Topic 1 : "Targeting refugees — Centre's position on Rohingya"
  • Refugee - someone who leaves their country, especially during a war or other threatening event
  • Intent - the intention to do something
  • Conflict - a feeling of being nervous or unhappy because you want two different things at the same time
  • Threat - a situation or an activity that could cause harm or danger
  • Persecute - to treat someone extremely badly, or to refuse them equal rights, especially because of their race, religion, or political beliefs
  • Deportation - a situation in which someone is deported from a country
  • Caution - careful thought and lack of hurry in order to try to avoid risks or danger
  • Imputation - the act of accusing someone of having a bad quality or of being guilty of something
  • Heartless - feeling or showing no sympathy or kindness

  • Deprived - not having the things that are essential for a comfortable life
  • Legitimate - fair and reasonable
  • Stridency - unpleasant situation
  • Militancy - the use of violent methods in support of a political or social cause
  • Assertion - a definite statement or claim that something is true
  • Disregard - the attitude of someone who does not respect something or consider it important
  • Constitute - if something constitutes something else, it is considered to be that thing
  • Abandonment - to leave a place or person quickly or suddenly
  • Humanitarian - relating to efforts to help people who are living in very bad conditions and are suffering because of a war, flood, earthquake etc
  • Exemplary - excellent
  • Signatory - a person or organization that has signed an official agreement
  • Adhere to something - to support or believe in an idea, plan, opinion etc
  • Normative - concerning rules, or forcing people to obey rules
  • Hue - a different type or group
  • Refoulement - the forcible return of refugees or asylum seekers to a country where they are likely to be harmed
  • Peremptory - speaking or behaving rather rudely, as if you expect other people to obey you immediately
  • Deportation -  a situation in which someone is sent out of a country
  • Immigrant - someone who comes to live in a country from another country
  • Confined to - limited to
  • The rigours of something - the difficult and unpleasant aspects of a situation
  • Accuse - to say that someone has done something wrong or committed a crime
  • Plotting - to make a secret plan with other people to do something bad
  • Strategic - carefully planned in order to achieve a particular goal, especially in war, business, or politics
  • Diplomatic - relating to the profession or skill of preserving or creating friendly relationships between countries
  • Backing - support / help
  • With regard to - concerning a particular subject
  • Vague - not complete, accurate, or fully formed
  • Infiltrate -  to secretly join an organization or go into a place in order to find out information about it or damage it
  • Under the guise of - looking like someone or something else, or pretending to be them
  • Safe haven - protection given by a country to someone from another country who is in danger because of a war or other serious problems in their own country

  • Proposed - offered formally as an idea or plan
  • Referendum - an occasion when everyone in a country can vote to make a decision about one particular subject
  • Escalating - to become much worse or more serious, or to make something do this
  • Despite - used for saying that something happens even though something else might have prevented it
  • Threaten - to tell someone that you might or you will cause them harm, especially in order to make them do something
  • Enhance - to improve something, or to make it more attractive or more valuable
  • Aspiration - something that you want to achieve
  • Destabilise - to cause problems for a country, government, or person in authority so that they become less effective
  • Ethnic - relating to a group of people who have the same culture and traditions
  • Protracted - continuing for a long time, especially longer than is normal or necessary
  • Civil war - a war fought between different groups of people within the same country
  • Resonance - an emotional effect produced by something
  • Dysfunctional relationship - dysfunctional relationships do not work normally and are not happy or successful
  • Brutal - cruel, violent, and completely without feelings
  • Autonomy - the power to make your own decisions
  • Dispute - a serious disagreement, especially one between groups of people that lasts for a long time
  • Proclaim - to state something publicly
  • Confederation - a group of people or organizations that are united
  • Status quo - the present situation, or the way that things usually are
  • Jeopardise - to risk damaging or destroying something important
  • Sectarian - caused by disagreements among people from different religious groups
  • Fault line - a problem that may not be obvious and could cause something to fail
