  • Long-term - continuing a long time into the future
  • Rely - to depend on or trust someone or something
  • Tact - a careful way of speaking or behaving that avoids upsetting other people
  • Temperament - someone’s temperament is their basic character, for example their tendency to be happy, angry etc
  • Apolitical - not connected with a particular political party
  • Amiable - friendly and pleasant
  • Cutting across something - to affect two or more different groups
  • Despite - used for saying that something happens even though something else might have prevented it

  • Fuss - a lot of unnecessary worry or excitement about something
  • Zero in on someone/something - to start to give all your attention to a particular person or thing
  • Prominent -  important and well known
  • Foray - an attempt at doing something new or something that you do not usually do
  • Ally - someone who is ready to help you
  • Ambitious plan - an ambitious plan, aim, or attempt is difficult and will need a lot of effort to succeed
  • Portfolio - a particular job or area of responsibility of a member of a government
  • Relinquish - to give up your power, position, or an advantage, especially when you do not want to do this
  • Ruled out - to stop considering something as a possibility

  • Compensate -  to behave in a way that is intended to reduce the effects of a personal fault

  • Fraught with - full of unpleasant things such as problems or dangers
  • Regime - a system of rules that control something
  • Notorious - famous for something bad
  • Liberalise - to make laws or rules less strict so that people have more freedom
  • Under the guise of - looking like someone or something else, or pretending to be them
  • Era - a period of time that has a particular quality or character
  • Robust - strong and successful
  • Stigmatising - to treat a particular type of behaviour as wrong or embarrassing and to try to make people who behave in this way feel ashamed
  • Progressive - progressive education aims to help children to develop all their abilities
  • Avenue - one of the methods you can use to achieve something
  • Ensuring - to make certain that something happens or is done
  • Productivity - the rate at which goods are produced, especially in relation to the time, money, and workers needed to produce them
  • Relegate - to move someone or something to a less important position
  • Attainment - the process of achieving an aim or particular level of success
  • On the contrary - used for emphasizing that something is true, even though it is the opposite of something that has been said
  • Comprehensive - including many details or aspects of something
  • Monitoring - to regularly check something or watch someone in order to find out what is happening
  • Vocational - a vocational course teaches the skills necessary for a particular job
  • The onus - the responsibility or duty to do something
  • Underprivileged - not having as many advantages or opportunities as most other people
  • Citizenry - the citizens of a particular place considered as a group
  • Outcome - final result of something
