Hindu Editorial Topic 1 : "GST Bill: Last mile concerns"

  • Last mile - the last stage in a process
  • Concern - a feeling of worry about something
  • Common ground - something that people can agree about, especially when they disagree about other things
  • Road map - a plan or set of instructions that makes it easier for someone to do something
  • Constitution -  a set of basic laws or principles for a country that describe the rights and duties of its citizens and the way in which it is governed
  • Amend - to make changes to a document, law, agreement etc, especially in order to improve it
  • Considerable - large in size, amount, or degree
  • Seemingly - according to what you know or how something appears
  • Irreconcilable - impossible to find agreement between or with, or impossible to deal with
  • Cropped up - to happen suddenly or unexpectedly

  • Compensate - to pay someone money because they have suffered an injury or loss
  • Negotiation - formal discussions in which people or groups try to reach an agreement, especially in a business or political situation
  • Assent - agreement with or approval of a plan or suggestion
  • Swiftly - quickly
  • Transition - the process of changing from one situation, form, or state to another
  • Myriad - a very large number of something
  • Levy - an amount of money that you have to pay, for example as a tax
  • Moreover - used for introducing an additional and important fact that supports or emphasizes what you have just said
  • Resist - to stop or oppose something
  • Pushback - resistance to a change that has been introduced
  • Roll-out - to introduce a new product or service
  • Expedite - to make something happen quickly or easily
  • Intent - the intention to do something
  • Essential - completely necessary
  • Set the cat among the pigeons - to cause trouble by doing or saying something
  • Degenerated - to become worse
  • Excise - a tax that a government charges on services used and goods sold inside its country
  • Customs - a government department that collects taxes on goods that people bring into a country

  • Draconian - extremely strict and severe
  • Impassioned - expressing a lot of emotion
  • Eventually - at the end of a process or period of time in which many things happen

  • Interpret - to understand an action, situation etc in a particular way
  • Signify - to mean something
  • Touchy - becoming angry or upset very easily
  • Delegation - a group of people who represent a country, government, or organization
  • Perceive - to understand or think about something in a particular way
  • Dissident - someone who disagrees publicly with a government, especially in a country where this is not allowed
  • Adequately - satisfactory and good enough
  • Envoy - an official who represents their country in another country, with a rank below an ambassador
  • Flexibility - the ability to make changes or to deal with a situation that is changing
  • Worthwhile - useful, important
  • Preoccupied - thinking about something so much or spending so much time doing something that you do not notice other things or cannot think about other things
