International Current Affairs
  • China's Parliament has approved President Xi Jinping as the core leader, elevating him to a status higher than others in the ruling Communist Party of China's collective leadership system. 
    • The core leader status, that had earlier been approved by the Communist Party, puts him at par with party founder Mao Zedong reinforcing his hold over all the organs of power.
  • Hawaii today became the 1st US state to file a lawsuit against President Donald Trump's revised immigration ban
    • The lawsuit said the new order will harm Hawaii's Muslim population, tourism and foreign students. 
    • Note : The order, set to go into effect on March 16, bars new visas for citizens of six Muslim-majority countries and temporarily halts the refugee program.
  • India and other G4 nations (Brazil, Germany and Japan) have offered to forgo their veto power if granted permanent membership in a reformed Security Council.
  • The President of India, Pranab Mukherjee today inaugurated the 12th CII-EXIM Bank Conclave on India Africa Project Partnership in New Delhi.
    • The main aim of this conclave is to deepen and strengthen India’s economic engagement with Africa.
    • The two-day Conclave is being organized by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) in partnership with the EXIM Bank of India with the support of the Ministry of External Affairs and the Ministry of Commerce & Industry, Government of India.
National Current Affairs
  • Widows in Madhya Pradesh need not compulsorily hold a Below Poverty Line (BPL) card to get their pension, Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has announced today.
    • Also, from now on, they (widows) will be addressed as Kalyani, Chouhan said.
  • The Centre has made Aadhaar mandatory for availing crop insurance policies from April 1. 
    • Till the time Aadhaar is assigned to an individual, crop insurance can be availed by furnishing documents such as Aadhaar enrolment slip and voter ID, among others. 
    • This comes after the Centre recently went back on its move to make Aadhaar mandatory for mid-day meals.
  • The government also made having an Aadhaar card must for poor women to avail free cooking gas (LPG) connection under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana
    • The government in October 2016 made the unique identification number mandatory for everyone to get LPG subsidies. 
    • It has now extended the same for free cooking gas connections to women of Below Poverty Line households.

Business & Economic Affairs
  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) today announced that it will soon issue ₹10 denomination notes with enhanced security features for circulation. 
    • The note will bear the year of printing on its backside.
  • Bollywood actor Salman Khan is going to venture into the smartphone business with 'Being Smart' branded phones.
    • He had selected a Chinese plant to develop the Android phones which will cost less than ₹20,000.
  • On the occasion of International Women's Day, Karnataka's IT Minister Priyank Kharge announced a ₹10 crore fund for women entrepreneurs in the state. 
    • The fund will provide women-led technology startups with up to ₹50 lakh each. 
    • The minister said that besides funding, the government will also provide legal and mentoring assistance to the startups.
  • Qatar Airways is planning to set up an airline in India, its CEO Akbar Al Baker announced today. 
    • Note : Last year, India allowed 100% FDI in the airlines segment.

Science & Technology
  • IBM researchers have created the world's smallest magnet using a single atom and managed to store data on it. 
    • One data bit was written by passing an electrical current through a Holmium atom freezing its magnetic orientation up or down referring to states 1 or 0. 
    • Note : Current hard drives use about 1,00,000 atoms to store a single bit.

Deaths
  • Scottish physicist Ronald Drever (85), credited with key early experimental work leading to the discovery of gravitational waves, recently passed away.
    • Drever co-founded the LIGO (Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory) project and worked with interferometers to tune their ability to function in the extreme sensitivity realm required to detect the tiny ripples in space and time.

New Appointments
  • The International Cricket Council (ICC) today appointed Indian cricketing legend Sachin Tendulkar as the UNICEF and Cricket For Good Ambassador for the ICC Women's World Cup 2017, which is going to start from June 24.

Awards & Honors
  • Indian skipper Virat Kohli and spinner Ravichandran Ashwin were awarded at the annual BCCI awards ceremony in Bengaluru today. 
    • Kohli, for the third time in his career, received the Polly Umrigar award for the best international cricketer, while Ravichandran Ashwin was given the Dilip Sardesai award
    • For the first time, women cricketers were honoured for their performances.

Sports Current Affairs
  • Sports Minister Vijay Goel tannounced on International Women's Day that the Ministry will soon set up a panel to tackle grievances of female athletes
    • The panel will include athletes, advocates and senior officials of the Ministry apart from a woman sports journalist, under the Chairmanship of Joint Secretary (Sports).
