Hello everyone, in our Lesson 19, we learnt about the prefix DiDi represents  the meanings twice; double; separationToday we shall see the prefix Dia. Happy Reading :)

Day 20 : Dia

  • Dia - through; across; apart
Let's try to understand this with some examples
  • dialogue (noun) = conversation between two or more persons 
    • dia - Prefix = through
    • logue (legein) - Root = speak 
  • diameter (noun) = measurement “across” a circle through its midpoint
    • dia - Prefix = across
    • meter (metron) - Root = measure
Let's have a look at some more words with dia prefixes, for better understanding.
  • diachronic = of going “across” time
  • diadem = a crown worn “across” a ruler’s head
  • diagonal = line “across” a rectangle from one corner to another
  • diagram = figure written “across” a page to illustrate a concept or information of some kind
  • dialect = a variant language that allows a speaking “across” from one person to another
  • dialogue = a speaking “across” between two people
  • diametrically = fully “across” from something else
  • diaphanous = of light shining “across” or “through” a clear material
  • diaspora = a scattering “across” the world
  • dialysis = the separation into elements 
  • diagnose = recognize a disease through symptoms

          Try to guess the meanings of the following elements.

          2. -ian
          3. -less
          4. -ive
          a. being in a state
          b. without
          c. tending to
          d. a specialist in
