Hello everyone, in our Lesson 18, we learnt about the prefix DeDe represents  the meanings down; off; thoroughly; fromToday we shall see the prefix Di. Happy Reading :)

Day 19 : Di

  • Di - twice; double; separation
Let's try to understand this with some examples
  • dioxide (noun) = a compound containing two atoms of oxygen. 
    • di - Prefix = two 
    • ox (oxygene) - Root = oxygen
    • ide - Suffix = a compound of 
  • divorce (noun) = separation, one from the other
    • di - Prefix = separation
    • vorce (vertere) - Root = to turn
Let's have a look at some more words with di prefixes, for better understanding.
  • divide = to separate into two or more parts
  • dilemma = a situation which poses two or more difficult choice 
  • digraph = = to vowels written together and making one sound
  • digest = break down (food) in the alimentary canal into substances that can be absorbed and used by the body
  • dilate = to (cause a part of the body to) become wider or further open
  • division = the act of separating something into parts or groups
  • dichotomy = a difference between two completely opposite ideas or things
        Home Work :

        Try to guess the meanings of the following elements.
        1. -ade
        2. -esce
        3. -hood
        4. -ic
        a. to become
        b. connected with
        c. the state of
        d. result of an action
