English Vocabulary in 365 Days - Lesson 12

Hello everyone, in our Lesson 11, we learnt about the prefix autoAuto represent the meaning Self. With that lesson, we have completed all the prefixes starting with the letter A. Today we shall see the prefix, which starts with the letter B be. Happy Reading :)

Day 12 : Be

  • be - throughly; to make
Let's try to understand these with some examples....
  1.  become (verb) = to start to be something
    • be - Prefix = to make 
    • come (kommen) - Root = get; receive 
  2. behaviour (noun) = the way that somebody behaves especially towards other people. 
    1. be - Prefix = throughly
    2. havi - Root = have 
    3. our - Suffix = belong to us
Let's have a look at some more words with be prefixes, for better understanding.
  1. bestow = to give, to grant
  2. bewail = express great sadness
  3. betoken = to be a sign of something 
  4. belated = coming or happening late
  5. behoove = to be necessary or proper 
  6. betrothal = to make arrangements before marriage (engagement)
  7. beguile = to make someone attract towards you before you cheat them
  8. bemused = slightly confused
  9. befriend = to be friendly towards someone
      Home Work :

      Try to guess the meanings of the following elements.
      1. peri-
      2. retro-
      3. syn-
      4. proto-
      a. fist
      b. backwards
      c. around
      d. together

      Try to match the above elements with given meanings.  Solve it on your own and
