Topic 1 : "Mr. Obama at Hiroshima"

  • Utter - to say something
  • On behalf of - to speak, act, or be present officially for another person or people
  • Wreath - an arrangement of flowers and leaves in a circular shape, used as a decoration or as a sign of respect and remembrance for a person who has died
  • Memorial - a statue or structure established to remind people of a person or event
  • Uncommonly - not seen, happening, or experienced often
  • Gripping - very interesting or exciting
  • Atrocity - an extremely cruel, violent, or shocking act
  • Candid - truthful and straightforward / frank
  • Gesture - an action that expresses your feelings or intentions
  • Rid - make someone or something free of (an unwanted thing)
  • Embraced - to hold someone closely in your arms, especially as a sign of affection
  • Survivor - a person remaining alive after an event in which others have died
  • Emotionalism - showing too much emotion
  • Drift - a continuous slow movement
  • Tugging - to pull with force or effort
  • Minefield - an area of land that contains mines (= bombs)
  • Occupant - a person who lives or works in a room or building
  • Devastation - great destruction or damage
  • Demitted - resign from (an office or position)
  • Sober - serious and calm
  • Sobering - making you feel serious or think about serious matters
  • Evaded - escaped or avoided
  • Provocation - an action or statement that is intended to make someone angry
  • Dwell on something - to keep thinking or talking about something, especially something bad or unpleasant
  • Excesses - actions beyond the limit of what is acceptable
  • Narrower - limited
  • Disarmament - the reduction or withdrawal of military forces and weapons
  • Plaudits - praise
  • Hawk - a person who strongly supports the use of force in political relationships rather than discussion or other more peaceful solutions
  • Apologist - a person who offers an argument in defence of something controversial
  • Pragmatist - the person who have the quality of dealing with a problem in a sensible way
  • Minced - talk honestly
  • Credible - able to be believed or trusted
  • Deterrent - a thing that discourages people from doing something
  • Striving - making great efforts to achieve something
  • Arsenals - a collection of weapons and military equipment
  • Lurk -  to wait or move in a secret way so that you cannot be seen, especially because you are about to attack someone or do something wrong
  • Hard-nosed - practical and determined / tough-minded
  • Arduous - difficult, needing a lot of effort and energy

Topic 2 : "Landing a quick-fix"

  • Quick-fix - something that seems to be a fast and easy solution to a problem but is in fact not very good or will not last long
  • Surplus - more than what is needed or used / excess
  • Deploying - to use something in an effective way
  • Divest - to sell something
  • Proceeds - the amount of money received from a particular event or activity or when something is sold
  • Inventory - a complete list of items
  • Alienate - transfer ownership of (property rights) to another person or group
  • Disinvestment - to sell your shares in a company or to stop taking part in a business activity
  • Prickly - complicated and difficult to deal with
  • Susceptible - easily influenced or harmed by something
  • Scrutiny -  the careful and detailed examination of something in order to get information about it
  • Peer - a person who is the same social position or the same abilities as other people in a group
  • Auditor - someone whose job is to carry out an official examination of the accounts of a business and to produce a report
  • Conclude - to end / to complete
  • Stake - a share or a financial involvement in something such as a business
  • Extensive - covering or affecting a large area
  • Transparency - the quality of being done in an open way without secrets
  • Pragmatic -  solving problems in a sensible way  that is based on practical rather than theoretical considerations
  • Refrain - to avoid doing something
  • Reflects - shows
  • Lack of something - to not have or not have enough of something that is needed
  • Discretionary - decided by officials and not fixed by rules
  • Determined - wanting to do something very much and not allowing anyone or any difficulties to stop you
  • Domain - an area of territory owned or controlled by a particular ruler or government
  • Encroachment - the act of slowly taking control of someone's land
  • Cantonment - a building or area where soldiers live
  • Mooted - to suggest something for discussion
  • Depository - a place where things are stored
  • Pertinent - relevant or applicable to a particular matter
  • Recompense - compensation or reward given for loss or harm suffered
  • Reform - make changes in something, in order to improve it
  • Set aside - the act of paying farmers in order not to grow crops on areas of land, or land of this type
  • Amending - changing
  • Acquisition - the process of getting something
  • Tenancy - the right to use land or live in a building in exchange for rent
