International Affairs
  • Today (7th April) is  World Health Day.
    • The World Health Day is a global health awareness day celebrated every year on 7 April, under the sponsorship of the World Health Organization (WHO).
    • This day is held to mark WHO's founding, and is seen as an opportunity by the organization to draw worldwide attention to a subject of major importance to global health each year.
    • This year the theme of the World Health Day is "food safety", which highlights the need of safe food that is free from microbes, viruses and chemicals.

  • Bangladesh Cabinet has approved a revised trade deal with India under which the two nations would be able to use each other's land and water routes for sending goods to a third country, removing a long standing barrier in regional trade.
    • The modified deal will enable Bangladesh to use Indian territories for transiting goods to Nepal and Bhutan, while India would be able to send goods to Myanmar through Bangladesh.

  • On World Health Day, India today began Mission 'Indradhanush', a massive immunisation
    campaign to cover by 2020 all children who are either unvaccinated or only partially vaccinated against seven preventable diseases. 
    • Depicting seven colours of the rainbow, Mission Indradhanush will provide vaccination to children against diphtheria, whooping cough, tetanus, polio, tuberculosis, measles and hepatitis B.
    • Mission 'Indradhanush' started with a "catch-up" campaign from April to July which will cover all children up to two years and pregnant women

  • Union Cabinet today announced 6 per cent hike in the Dearness Allowance (DA) for central government employees and pensioners with effect from 1st of January this year.
    • With this hike, the DA now has gone up to 113 per cent of the basic pay from 107 per cent.
    • This decision will benefit 48 lakh government employees and 55 lakh pensioners in the country.
  • The Union Cabinet approves amendments to the Real Estate (Regulation and Development) Bill to protect the interests of millions of consumers and curbed malpractices in the real estate sector.
    • The bill provides for creating a uniform regulatory mechanism across the country and enhance the growth of construction sector
    • It also seeks to ensure accountability and transparency in the real estate sector to access capital and financial markets essential for its long term growth. 
    • The Bill is currently pending in the Rajya Sabha.
  • The telecom regulatory body TRAI‬ proposes a single number '112' for all emergency phone calls across the country including for police, fire and ambulance.
    • It said in its recommendations that similar to the '911' an all-in-one emergency service in the US, government can integrate all existing emergency numbers such as 100, 101, 102 and 108 into the proposed '112' helpline number.
  • The National Green Tribunal (NGT), today, banned all diesel vehicles over ten years old from plying on Delhi roads.

  • Forbes Middle East has released the names of the 100 richest Arab personalities in the world, the first position going to Saudi Arabia’s Prince Alwaleed bin Talal Al Saud with an estimated fortune of $22.6 billion.

  • Pratap Singh, a 15-year-old Indian-origin schoolboy in the UK has been awarded the Institute of Physics Prize for conducting an experiment that verified an effect of Albert Einstein's theory of special relativity.
MOUs
  • Life Insurance Corporation (LIC) of India and Dena Bank signed an MoU to implement the Pradhan Mantri Jeevanjyoti Bima Yojana (PMJBY) for the savings account holders of Dena bank.
    • PMJBY is a life insurance scheme and was announced by finance minister Arun Jaitley in the Union budget.
    • The scheme offers insurance cover of Rs 2 lakh to the bank account holders in the age group 18-50 years. 
    • The insurance cover will be available up to 55 years.
Business & Economy
  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has kept the repo rate and cash reserve ratio unchanged.
    • The current repo rate is 7.50% and cash reserve ratio at 4%.
  • State Bank of India, the country's largest lender, today announced a reduction in its lending rate by 15 basis points to 9.85%.
    • This will be effective from 10th April. 
    • SBI is the first major bank to cut its base lending rate this year.
    • HDFC Bank also followed suit by slashing its lending rate by 0.15% to 9.85% effective from April 13.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi will tomorrow launch MUDRA Bank which will provide credit of up to Rs 10 lakh to small entrepreneurs and act as a regulator for 'Micro-Finance Institutions' (MFIs).
    • The roles envisaged for MUDRA include laying down policy guidelines for micro enterprise financing business and registration of MFI entities as well as their accreditation and rating.
