National Affairs
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the National Air Quality Index (AQI).
    • The index will provide information on the quality of air in 10 major cities in the country, including Delhi and Mumbai.
    • Delhi's air pollution has been in focus in recent months, surpassing Beijing as the most polluted city in the world.
  • Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has celebrated its 35th foundation day.
    • PM Narendra Modi has greeted the party workers and well wishers on the occasion.
Science & Technology
  • First of the six indigenously built Scorpene submarines which are being manufactured in Mumbai, was launched into the water, initiating the process for extensive trials.
    • The diesel-electric submarines are being built at the state-run Mazgaon docks in Mumbai.
    • These are expected to be inducted into the Navy by 2018, about four years later than planned. 
    • The project has also over-shot the budget by nearly Rs. 5,000 crore and is expected to cost about Rs. 23,000 crore. 
    • One (Scorpene) submarine will be delivered every nine months.

  • Paris- based Syrian-Lebanese Arab poet Adonis has been chosen Kumaran Asan World Prize for poetry 2015.
    • If Only the Sea Could Sleep, Pages of Day and Night, Songs of Mihyar the Damascene, Not A Star, A Voice, A King is Miyhar, The Adoring Rock, Take me to God are his important works.
    • The award consisting of a cash prize of Rs 3 lakh, a memento and citation will be presented to him on Sunday, May 3, at a function at Kayikara, birthplace of Kumaran Asan, in Thiruvananthapuram district.
  • Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) has bagged the prestigious Golden Peacock National Quality Award for the year 2015.

  • Twitter has acquired Periscope, a startup that lets users stream live video from their phone, according to a person familiar with the deal.
  • Indian Grandmaster Dronavalli Harika won Bronze medal in World Women's Chess
    2015 (held in Sochi, Russia).
    • She is from Guntur, Andhra Pradesh.
    • She earned the Grandmaster title in July 2011.

      • Gold Medal Winner :  Mariya Muzychuk (Ukraine) 
      • Silver Medal Winner : Natalija Pogonina (Russia)
    • Important Note : Mariya Muzychuk (Ukraine) is current Women's World Champion.
  • ‪‎RajeevShukla‬ re-appointed Chairman of the IPL Governing Council. 
    • Former Union minister and Congress leader Shukla was the IPL chairman till 2013 when he resigned from the post in the aftermath of the IPL 'spot-fixing' scandal.
    • Shukla's appointment has come just one day before the opening ceremony of the IPL-8 in Kolkata.
    • Sourav Ganguly was a new entrant to the IPL Governing Council.
  • Sania Mirza and Martina Hingis win Miami Open Women's Doubles title;
