International Affairs
  • China has offered to lift its strategic partnership with India to a “higher level,” and prompted New Delhi to avoid a “zero-sum trap” that was being set up by Washington and its allies.
    • In a message, on the occasion of 66th Republic Day, to President Pranab Mukherjee, his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping expressed China’s willingness “to make concerted efforts with India to lift their strategic cooperative partnership oriented to peace and prosperity to a higher level”.
  • Anti-austerity Syriza party has won Greece's general election, putting the country on a possible collision course with the EU over its massive bailout.

  • Nation celebrates its 66th Republic Day with enthusiasm.
    • India's military prowess and achievements in different fields, state-of-the-art defense platforms, its diverse cultural and social traditions was put on display at the Republic Day parade in New Delhi today.

    • Important Highlights of Republic Day 2015
      • Obama became the first American President to attend India's parade.
      • This year’s Republic Day parade for the first time featured all-women contingents of the three Services (Army, Navy and Air Force) march across Rajpath. Each contingent had 148 women personnel.
        • Army contingent was led by Capt Divya Ajith.
        • Navy contingent was led by Lt Commander Sandhya Chauhan.
        • Air Force contingent was led by Squadron Leader Sneha Shekhawat.
      • The President and the chief guest arrived in different motorcades, a departure from the standard practice of arriving together (Obama arrived in his own highly-secured bomb-proof vehicle, 'The Beast')

  • Over 1,180 students of Sigaram Matriculation Higher Secondary School at Chettiyappanoor, near Vaniyambadi (Tamil Nadu), set a world record by creating the “world’s largest national flag made with salt” on the school premises on the eve of Republic Day.

  • India's highest peacetime gallantry award, the Ashoka Chakra, has been given posthumously to two soldiers who died fighting terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir - Major Mukund Varadarajan and Naik Neeraj Kumar Singh.
    • Both the army men had laid down their lives while battling groups of militants in separate operations in Shopian and Kupwara districts of Kashmir.
  • Colombia's Paulina Vega was crowned Miss Universe today, beating out contenders from the United States, Ukraine, Jamaica and The Netherlands at the world's top beauty pageant in Florida.
    • She is the second beauty queen from Colombia to take home the prize.

  • Australian Open 2015
    • Milos Raonic became the first Canadian man in the Open Era to reach the Australian Open quarter-finals.
    • India’s Leander Paes and Sania Mirza advanced to the quarter-finals of the of the mixed doubles event, winning their respective matches at the Australian Open tennis tournament today.
